What would be the period correct way to 'rustproof' the steel barrel on a flintlock pistol? Browning or blueing? I know browning makes metal look older, but it wouldn't have looked older when it was new, and I've also heard that the older 'browning' recipes actually decribed a process that creates more of a blueing effect. So what's right? TIA.

i have read that upon clearing for action all fires and lantrens are extinguished except the light for the powder room and the sickbay. has anyone ever read how you would go about relighting your slow match if it ever got blown out by the back blast of the vent.

From The Memoirs of Pére Labat 1693-1705, translated and edited by John Eaden. “While they [the merchants in the fleet] were sailing past us, a small vessel from Nantes came alongside. The captain came on board, and gave M. de la Herronier [the captain of the ship Labat was on] a dolphin more than seven feet long. He asked us to give him some water and wood, as all his store was finished. He was given two large casks of water and half a sheep, and was advised to burn four wooden cannons that he had on board, and only keep his two iron pieces which were one-pounders.” (Labat, p. 19)

This is my Baby so far - a custom, scratch built Walnut stock Club Butt "canoe gun"...1st coat of finish was applied after these pics this evening. Been doing this gun for a while & hopefully will be done in time for some events. This poor thing I am sure is not very PC for F & I war,but $ situation dictated I finish it & use it anyways until I can get 1 that is. I think it should be OK for Pyracy ,considering it's compatible in size with Blunderbusses? I am hoping when I got the funds to add a Pistol to this to complete the look of a Pyrate.

Got my new sword from Armour Class last week. Its their Schiavona Re-enactment With Shark Skin Grip but I had it modified with the blade from the hanger they sell put onto it instead of the broadsword blade it originally had.

I spent all day on planes and I was reading Nathaniel Boteler[butler]'s Dialogues, first published in 1685. The edition I'm reading was edited by W. G. Perrin and published by the Navy Records Society in 1929. He had this to say which I thought you might find interesting. "Admiral. Since we have proceeded thus far in discourse about these fiery weapons that are most profitably portable in ships of war, it will be fit to consider of the rest of them, and of all such arms in general, as you hold most proper and useful in this nature. Captain. As for such fiery weapons as are managed by single men, and to be used above the decks, I know none fitter than the ordinary musket…

ok, this is coming from someone who has no experience with metal-working, at all... so, let's say that I have two blades that I think would be much better off being... shorter. What is the best way I could accomplish that?

Title and description pretty much say it all. Curiosity compels. FWIW: I was thinking of starting with a .662 and 30 grains of 3f.

I have decided that I want to take a particular lock and use it to build a french grenade launcher. As many of the parts on this lock are past the GAoP they are very likely original French flintlock parts (thus the french gun). I came across an original English grenade launcher that had some beautiful writing inscribed on it and am wondering if there is anything compareable for France.

Here's the link and below the link is a cut and paste job of the article. Tourist shot by ramrod Cannon mishap at tourist site injures Ky. man Ramrod shoots 100 yards, breaks 52-year-old’s leg, bruises wife updated 1:30 p.m. PT, Fri., Oct . 16, 2009 LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. - When Douglas Struder watches war movies, he doesn't have to wonder what it's like to be shot by a cannon. He has a pretty good idea already. Struder, the president of a Cincinnati-based marketing firm, was visiting the Adirondacks earlier this month when a cannon fired at a recreated Colonial fort sent a ramrod flying more than 100 yards. It struck his left leg, fracturing the tibia just below the kne…

Here be me new Seahorse knife... The texture of the grip is like a fine sandpaper. It feels right nice in m'hand. It nestles right on my Barbossa Baldric and held in place with 3 screws.... The custom Scabbard was made by Barbossa Leathers. The hand carved mermaid and the cutaway flap shows off the knife *tail* but hold the knife very securely in place. The blade itself is far from Period but (shrug) since most will never see the blade (except at the dinner table...) I'm not worried about it. A happy addition fer me says I!
