  1. For a fairly complete list (as far as I can tell), go to http://noquartergiven.net/movies.htm Not only all the pirate movies I've seen are listed there, but there's even skulls to mark the good ones! Coastie04
  2. Aye, not exactly a pirate movie, but is the Princess Bride really a pirate movie? It was given a lot of mention here. Though not technically a pirate movie, I believe that it is a movie that pirate fans would like.
  3. I'd put forth another movie for ye all to consider. The Count of Monte Cristo (Jim Caviezel, Guy Pearce, Richard Harris) was a great movie with fine swordsmanship and bits of smuggling. One of the best scene's is a knife fight on the beach, though the opening fight scene is one of the best cutlass fight scenes I've ever seen. Besides, there's hidden treasure, betrayal, and revenge... Definitely a fun one to watch. Coastie04
  4. Rum'll do just fine...Hell, anything that's been fermented and is currently in a liquid form (and supposed to be).
  5. One more for this. Sailing the Interceptor with only two people??? Yeah right! I've sailed that boat with four deck hands and the captain at the tiller (which would have been far better than the wheel they put on her for the movie). It was a lot of work then. Open ocean for a short period of time, maybe they wouldn't have to do any maneuvering and would get no bad weather. However, into a port? The lightest anchor of hers weighs 800lb, and the other two are 1500 or so (if I remember correctly). Anchoring itself is quite a feat, even for trained seamen, let alone a lubber of a blacksmith. 6. Stinky, An idea hath come into my mind. The unfrienldly end of a naval cannon firing would be quite appropriate. It's not a smiley face, unless there was an unusually yellow cannonball, but either way it would be cool. Coastie04
  7. I'd go for the schooner any day. However, this week I'll have to make do with a modern J-35. If any o' ye'll be in the Newport, RI area, I'll be sailin' the fine vessel 'Diva' this weekend in a 'round the bouy race and we'll be in port most of the week before sailing in the NYYC annual regatta in Newport. Stop in and say hi if ye be around. Coastie04
  8. I did a quick search online and found this book on the subject at Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/155...6737351-4138201 From what I can gather, the boat first sailed in 1814 and was commanded by Captain Johnston Blakeley. Coastie04
  9. Thank ye all fer sending me fond wishes. I'll match all ye drinks (legally this time!!!). This is the first of this post I've seen since my birthday, ten days ago!!! With graduation ceremonies, drill, etc., as well as preparing a J-35 for a summer of ocean racing, I've had no time whatsoever. However, if any o' you scum be sailin' in the big races o' New England this summer, then stop on by the sloop 'Diva' an' ask for th' sailmaster. I'll be happy to have ye buy me a pint. Heartiest thanks to all, Coastie04
  10. Just a guess, but I don't think the Evil you're thinkin' of was born in '59. At least the Evil I know from the Lady looks a bit younger than that. Coastie04
  11. Well, as much as I love watching swordfights, the only stuff I've really done was as crew of the Lady Washington. To pass the time away at night, a few of us made boffers out of PVC pipe, insulation, and lots of duct tape. I'd say it was probably much like some pirates, as we were young, looking for adventure on the high seas, and afraid of nothing. Occasionally, if there were people around, they would ask if we learned to fight on the ship as well as sail, so I guess it looked pretty good. However, if anyone has any suggestions (besides taking any sort of swordfighting classes) that would make it even better, I'd love to hear 'em. Coastie04
  12. OK, since I was stuggling fiercly with the dread pirate GPA last night, I was wondering if someone would fill me in on how the chat went and any interesting things to note. Coastie04
  13. Thank you, Capt. I'll have to try and get over there sometime. As of right now, I don't really know what my exact schedule will be, but if I have enough time, I'll definitely have to check that out. I be interested in any tall ships from any time period. Coastie04
  14. Well, I be no wench an' I be currently prowlin' the East coast, but my origins are from Bellevue and I'd be curious fer knowin' how many pirate wenches be in me state as well. Coastie04 Pyracy: the first democracy in the New World
  15. Another reason that sails were tanned, well not really a reason, but a nice side product...camouflage. As mentioned, it was mainly small coastal traders and fishermen that had tan-bark sails. Generally, they stand out less against the land than bright white ones. Therefore, it helped to avoid some detection by either enemy warships or pirates. On a historical note, to prove that pirates sometimes had colorful sails, Capt. Kidd once was forced to use dyed linens to patch his sails. I forgot the island he was sailing from, but he and his few loyal crew members were essentially marooned. Imagine a ship coming in with a pokadot patch in the main and a pair o' breeches in the fore! 16. I was just wondering what circumstances would create the perfect pirate. Needless to say, pirates had countless reasons for hoistin' the black flag, but I'm lookin' more fer th' personality the perfect pirate would have. Personally, I'd have to say that Doc Holliday had a perfect personality. I know, he's a bit dusty fer pyracy, but had he known how to sail, we may well be sayin' his flag were th' best. My reasoning: He started out very bright and held a PhD in dentistry. However, turberculosis got the better of 'im, so he moved out west. There, he began a fine career o' drinkin', gamblin', 'nd gunfightin'. Due to his illness, he had a deathwish that, combined with intellect, made him fierce in battle. He could also hold 'is grog as good as any. Pretty much, he knew he had a short time to live and had as much fun as possible gamblin', drinkin', and womanizin', all the while makin' a name fer 'imself as a cold-blooded murderer. Add some salt t' that, an' ye got yerself a legendary pyrate. Coastie04
  17. While not traditional, I like the "naughty" pirate flag I've seen. I think it conveys the meaning quite well. For a picture, go to: http://www.naughtyjollyroger.com/ Coastie04
  18. I'd take a steamship. Obviously, it would be revolutionary technology for back then and make me rich. At the same time, the major necessities that make it run (water and fuel) would also be available. Imagine how easy it would be plyin' the doldrums for prey. Coastie04
  19. Sounds fun, but I'll be prepar'n me J-35 fer prowlin' the New England coast 'round then. If ye be a-goin', report back with th' stories. Coastie04
  20. I just found out that I'll be spending some time in Portsmouth, VA this year and was wondering if anyone who knows the area can guide me to some tall ships nearby. In a quick search of schoonerman.com, I found a couple in Norfolk, the Norfolk Rebel and the American Rover. Also, I found the site for the schooner Virginia, currently under construction. Are there any others??? Coastie04 "When a man comes to like a sea life, he is not fit to live on land." -Dr. Samuel Johnson
  21. Capt. William, Aye, the Lifesaving Service be'd a fine service in its day. However, just one of the organizations that binded into the modern CG. I would be interested in how/why you've a shirt with its logo on it, considering it was incorporated with the Revenue Cutter Service in or around 1915 to form the Coast Guard. 22. Huzzah for the Revenue Cutter Service!!! Huzzah! (I'll try to get me friends to cut down the chasin' after fellow pirates, though). Coastie04
  23. Where be that local pub o' yers? Coastie04
  24. That bloke be gettin' his gun off. Coastie04
  25. She's got an interesting fore tops'l there. Any reason for the cut out of center of the foot of it? It looks like the last ship she encountered was armed proper. Coastie04 "Snow?!? In April???" -Random Cadet from the south
