Imagine yourself walking out the door, an eclectic handkerchief knotted smartly around your neck. Or maybe tied fashionably around your hair. Tucked in a pocket. Or wrapped on your wrist. The compliments pour in and you can say "Thanks! I made this!" This is your golden opportunity to share in a Pyracy Pub creative effort. Go on the account with us and receive a hand printed handkerchief when the booty is shared out. What is expected of you? Step 1: Sign up by July 14th. Step 2: Create a nautical or piracy related design as a printing block or plate. (This is the real work you need to do. More resources to follow on this.) Step 3: Send your block…

First post here (whoo-hoo!), and thought I'd share a illustration I just started. It's the first time I've attempted to draw a sailing ship and it still has a long way to go. I really wanted to do something elaborate and huge like the Queen Anne's Revenge or HMS Victory but I thought I'd start with something simple and work my way up. As I am a most accursed landlubber, any comments and critiques are welcome and appreciated! And one question; is anyone aware of a particularly infamous pirate who used a sloop akin to this? I ask because I want to draw a suitable flag on it when the time comes.

I found this example of a loan agreement form from 1691 and after a little research found out that the form was created in the mid 1680s BRADFORD, William (printer). Partly-printed loan certificate, accomplished in manuscript, binding Weckhard Livering of Germantown to Thomas Hill for £20. [Philadelphia: William Bradford, c.1686-1690]. 1 p., small folio (295 x 185 mm). Signed by Livering with his mark, signed by three witnesses Arnoh Cassell, John Griffith and Thomas Herris. Docketing on verso. On watermarked laid paper. Condition: staining, separations at folds, tears with minor losses. among the earliest examples of printing in the middle colonies. "Born in the pari…

So here's a little reproduction map that I've been working on for a couple of days. Certainly not the nicest one I've drawn but all in all I think it turned out well. It's 16"x21" on laid paper. The map is completey hand plotted, drawn, and inked with one of the main ou of period details being that I used pens with waterfast ink to prevent smudging should the map get wet. Comments and Crtisicm are welcome. I'm heading off to the final weekend of my localish renaissance festival tomorrow. I entirely failed at any plans for new garb despite my carefully laid plans. So this evening I've been digging through my bins to cobble something together from things I made nearly two decades ago. A small leather folder contained this note and some handmade goods from one of our departed friends and I find it is suddenly a maudlin evening here abouts.

This is a custom made King George the Second Letter of Marque I have just finished making for one of the bretheren. It is 18"x25" like many of the original ones and has the strip of seals at the bottom like like original documents of the era too. It was researched as much as I could from actual letters or marque, royal charters and indentures to make it as authentic as possible. It is witnessed by William Pitt who was secretary of state in 1758 and George Anson who was Lord Admiral of the admiralty at this time too. All the signatures are actual reproductions of surviving examples. It is printed on a heavyweight parchment vellum which feels and looks as close to an…

Bored, waiting for the repair man who is going to fix the fancy new stove that is fortunately still under warranty... Soooooo... I have a ton of lead pirates. Well, maybe not a ton, since some of them are lead free pewter, but I digress. I need to paint some. Soooooo... if I do, I'll post the results. One thing I have painted recently, a nice piratey treasure chest. This is in 25/28/30mm scale, so in the picture, the square grid it is resting upon is one inch. Without further ado...

By favorite books, I mean the ones you keep as eye candy, or for reference on different techniques and methods. Or even ones that inspire you, which might be something other than a book strictly on art. You might also mention if the book is still in print. So post your favs. I'll start. I believe all of these are still in print. Anything by Nick Bantock, but especially the Griffin and Sabine series, or The Venetians Wife. Artists' Journals & Sketchbooks by Lynne Perrella - Soft cover. al.pha.bet.i.ca An A-Z Creativity Guide for Collage and Book Artists by Lynne Perrella - Soft cover. So carrying over from the recent projects thread, I've been having much silly fun with boxes of late. I found a great resource for pine wine boxes from the local booze shop as well as Michael's and Hobby Lobby craft stores. So today I finished up my by-level cargo box: This is a recent wine and goblet box: One of my wife's many cook/spice boxes: Our game box: I've two more mine boxes to convert and a crate. Whoohoo!

Couple 'o years back I started trackin' down me ancestors. Had always heard me Grammaw sayin' we was Scottish, Irish and native Indian. Well... found Scottish, English, Cherokee and a large portion from the Netherlands/Bavaria. Not an Irishman to be found. Usin' the tools provided by Wikitree and Ancestry I's been able to dig up several stories of piratical interest. The earliest occurs in 1499 when Breton Pirate Colyn Dolphin ransoms a Sir Harry Stradling for 1 or 2 thousand marks (depending on the source). Sir Harry is 17 degrees away so It's just an interesting tale. Fast forward to the mid 1600's and the Scottish/English ancestors are gettin' deported and leavin' the…

Surfin' the web a'while back and I runned across a feller who's facebook page is dedicated to OLD techniques and processes fer just about everything. Foods , building supplies, makin' bells, stonework, horn, hammerin' out gold leaf, makin saddles outta grass and the like. The videos are kinda longish and the translations from various languages is odd at times. Yer skills WILL be enriched by wotchin' this character. T'ain't necessarily pirate arts, just the way things was/is done by hand me down knowledge. www.facebook.com/eugeniomonesmalosttrades/

Many members of the Pub also make some kind of jewelry. Whether to sell or just for fun. I thought a place where we could trade tips, share works in progress, ask for help, or just hang around and talk jewelry would be nice. Posting pictures, either of your work, your workplace, or of what inspires you, is highly recommended! THIS IS NOT A PLACE TO SELL YOUR WARES! So, sit back, sip your coffee, and lets share our lust...er, love...of jewelry.

I was playing around with my art pencils last night and out came this poor marooned pirate. I'm normally not very good at drawing people so I'm pretty happy with how he looks. Let me know what you think. All comments are appreciated, and constructive criticism welcomed.
