The Festival committee has mentioned to me an interest in having pirates/re-enactors at their celebration. I have been in contact with Stynky Tudor on this who has aided them greatly. There will be a committee meeting mid August in Bath. If you are interested could you please inform me of your rates, gratuitiy, and needs so that I can pass them along to the chairwoman in charge of this event. Many things are still up in the air on this celebration, but as the time grows nearer, they will get done. Tis a year away, yet some folks like to be prepared. Cap'nPern
Blackbeards Crew has placed Bath on their Schedule for 2005. I am glad to know of the September dates. We have actually started planning a retracing of the course of Lt Maynard for 2005 from Hampton, VA aboard two sloops bound for Ocracoke and then to Bath the timing may be perfect. We be under full sail, firin' all guns, and flyin' the black flag. Pyrate clothes and reenactin' be fine endeavors, and that be fer certain, but we be primarily interested in singin'! And we be lookin' for like-minded brigands--voices 'n' instruments alike--to join our jolly band o' buccaneers. If ye be in the area, give us a hail. Aye, I believes yer cap'n has given me a hail. We certainly be open to consortin' with another pyrate crew. Not all 'o our own crew be singers/musicians. Some o' the scurvy dogs be around for what they calls ambience (mighty fancy word fer a humble pyrate) or to works up the crowd. I'm not sure if we'll be makin' MDRF pyrate weekend this year. We be headin' north to the PA Renfair pirate weekend August 21. We has a few rogues who also be somethin' called Klingons who have shown up at Revel Grove before; they might come out some time in October to frighten the bloody Pyrates Royale. In any event, has yer cap'n hail again 'n we'll parley. Rumba Rue
I recieved a PM a few days back on why PRP - Port Royal Privateers wasn't listed in the Crew section. Though I'm not a current Board member, I have been in the past so I can tell you this information. PRP has never once had to solicte anyone to join us. People see us at events, like what they see and inquire. PRP is also one of the longest Privateer groups around (11 years and still going strong), and most likely the most laid-back group of people too. The majority of our members are well into their 30's and up. Our main goal is to interact with members of the public, hence we are an 'acting' group. We don't consider ourselves a Guild like other groups do. We are a private club. For more information on PRP, go to: http://www.portroyalprivateers.org Rumba Rue **We're not pirates, we're independently contracted marine salvage specialists above the water line**
blackjohn
We don't consider ourselves a Guild like other groups do. Ahoy! I'm curious as to your use of the word "Guild." I'm not particularly familiar with "Renn-culture" or the SCA. Is that what most pirates groups with those backgrounds or heritages call themselves? hurricane
We don't use the "G" word in our crewe. We're a crewe of pirates, or perhaps a "Plunder of Pirates," like gaggle of geese and such... Definitely not a guild here. More like a Benevolent Dictatorship. -- Hurricane ______________________________________________________________________ http://piratesofthecoast.com/images/pyracy-logo1.jpg Captain of The Pyrates of the Coast Author of "Memoirs of a Buccaneer: 30 Year Before the Mast" (Published in Fall 2011) Scurrilous Rogue Stirrer of Pots Fomenter of Mutiny Bon Vivant & Roustabout Part-time Carnival Barker Certified Ex-Wife Collector Experienced Drinking Companion "I was screwed. Rumba Rue
Guilds usually have the line-up of President, vice- pres. etc. that members must look up to and follow a very strict guideline of what's expected. PRP doesn't have that kind of stuff. As a group we aren't beholding to any higher ups. While we do have Board members, they are there to get our events, encampment and money in place, not to police us. We act as a whole group and are 'suppose' to follow the guidelines set up for the group. Well as it's been said before, 'the majority of us have more than once broken the rules.' I can most certianly attest to that myself. We also have a standing rule you must be 18 to be in the group. If a young person under that age wants to join, then a parent must join too. We aren't babysitters and we do have 'ahem' liquor in the encampment (hidden from the event organisers as it's not usually accepted). Hope this information has been helpful. I'm sure if I've missed anything, PyrateQueen/Loretta can tell you. Rumba Rue **I had a mind once....I'm still looking for it**
blackjohn
Thanks for the explanation Rumba Rue. Sounds like you have a tight-knit group there, with everyone on the same page, which is nice. Cap'nPern
I can speak towards Blackbeard's Crew Culture. We run our organization much the way the pirates would have in days of old. There is no Pres, VP, Secretary, etc. We do have a QuarterMaster who leads our meetings and organizes the teams for which ever raid we be makin'. We have a ship's pursor, a scribe and a few other positions that would have been pertinent 286 years ago. Anything the crew does pretty much gets voted on as a crew and majority wins. When it comes to an event the Quartermaster has his name on the line and we as a crew respect that. All the rum bottles that we carry as cargo are locked in sea chests fer shippin' purposes. We focus most of our energies on reeneactment of the Golden Age of Piracy. But also do some small local raids for the free ale. In Hampton Virginia . Lt. MAynard was dispatched to capture Edward Teach in Ocracoke. So this gives us some historical license as well as responsibility.
moricktowain
The Pirate Brethren of Texas is looking for new crew members. We are an open minded, all male crew, geared towards the "alternative lifestyles". At present, all of our crewembers are gay, but we welcome anyone in an alternative lifestyle (gay, bi, trans, s&m, b&d, etc) or anyone who doesn't have a problem being with such a group. One of our main rules is "Dress for comfort, not for historical accuracy". And to that fact, there is a minimum requirement for garb: some form of leggings(wrap pants, tights, breaches, kilts, etc.) and some form of footwear. What crew members wear on their upper body is up to them(And as an example, unless it's cold, I normally go in wrap pants, boots, and a vest(barechested under the vest).) We are mainly a social group, and go to Scarborough Faire and Texas Renaissance Faire, as well as invading a local bar for a social night every Tuesday(with every other Tuesday, weather permitting, in garb) At present, our entire crew compliment is 6, including one that is our non-garbed historian(who better to carry a digital camera and video camera around than someone in mundane clothing!) Membership is really restricted to those in Texas or South Oklahoma, with a preference to those in Dallas. People out of the area are welcomed into the crew at a case by case basis. If anyone would be interested in joining, they can contact me via private message on this board, or via email at piratebrethrenofTX@yahoo.com. Morick Towain Captain of the Pirate Brethreno of Texas [An edit to my post: We used to go to a bar on Tuesday nights for their free bingo....they had to stop doing that (legal reasons) but the I do try to make an appearance at the bar and some of my crew do show up on occasion.] Morick Towain IBoRP #116 Captain of the Pirate Brethren of Texas

hurricane
Usually true about the Benevolent Dictatorship... but we've been down the meetings and positions road before and each time it has become mired in politics, fighting over monies, letting less than stellar pirates into the crewe and hard feelings. After being through that three times, I've learned my lesson. So, we have no meetings. All monies are dispersed equally according to who showed up (if we even charge for something), everyone is expected to have fun, there's no Captain or similar position - whoever sets up and event runs it, period. We aren't historically accurate but we are hysterically accurate - and everyone must have fun!!!! In the end, The Pyrates are attached to our business so we get all the protections of a corporation, including that wonderful liability insurance that can be impossible to get with a bunch of cutthroats running around with weapons. So ultimately, I get the final say and that's worked well for many years now. Pirates just want to be pirates and not into politics and positions. So, if any of you want to follow the rules 1) Drink, 2) Have fun, 3) Leave a positive impression on all you come into contact with... then yer more than welcome in our happy, mischievious crewe.
