Arr, I do wish ye'd be more specific in yer headin's. "Bodices worth a peek" was too litral for sech a fool as I, as I.

Sarves me right, tho, an' I've no doubt. No doubt atall atall.

I thought all bodice's were woth a peak?

No no.... a bodice is worth a *peek* to just about any sailor.

A bodice will cause a *peak* only if it's laced up right!

Well, you may not realize it but your looking at the remains of what was once a very handsome woman!

Phil....It be an old postcard....most likely a stage play, or silent film. They had fantastic costumes back then. I was searching a site called Tallulahs postcards..hoping she had pirate, or nautical themes. I found this one. Yes..some of the men were "a tad foofy"...but...it's OK by me..I have always been a bit strange...meself.. if a man be dressin' in wench garb.....I be tha first ta say "Turn around so's I kin sees ya better" If a wench be dressin' like a man...I be tha first ta say "You're a sight ta behold" ;) I likes what I likes when I sees it..an' I know ye do as well...Phil ...... ;)

Ahh, m'lady, ye have me at a disadvantage, ye do...

If a man be dressin' in wench garb, I be sayin', "Turns arounds so's I kin see ye leavin' better", whereby, iffin a wench be dressin' like a man, I be sayin' "Turns around so's I can be holdin' ye better"... ;)

I be afraid I be an old pyrate...when mens were mens, wenches were wenches, and it allays seem't work out pretty fair thet way...

But also sez I, lives and let lives... ;)

So much fer th' confusin' "Old School" pyrates...

Here's the bodice I'd almost kill for and there's the pattern for it at this site too!!

Dark Leather

I'm sewing up my pirate shirt this weekend, haven't bought the fabric yet, can't decide whether to go a natural coloured fine linen, or a bright orange silk.

I have these bagging pants, black with a thin white pinstrip, doc marten boots, gold hoop earings, black head scarf,

Thought I'd also add a sash in a bright colour, might clash with the orange silk shirt though......or just a wide leather belt....

What do you think?

The one for sale at that site is vinyl, but if I get one made I want it in black LEATHER...........leather good, vinyl BAD!

But black leather and a natural linen shirt? Or maybe a maroon coloured leather? Or an orange silk shirt with the black leather bodice?

Vinyl is hardly 16th century.........

I'm not a historian like Hawkyns and such, but I'm not sure bright orange is 16th century either. As for leather....HOT HOT HOT. I don't know yer longitude or lattitude but out here on the west coast, leather be too hot for most of the faires.

Also leather won't dry out ifn it gets wet and moist. I mainly use leather on me boots for when I require some riding or tramping through rough terrain. Stocking to soak up the sweat and a leather hat to keep to keep my head breathing with a bandana to keep the sweat off the hat.

But a leather bodice? Only if you into bondage.

Orange is a period colour, as long as it's a muted orange, burnt or a peachy orange. International Distress Orange is definately out.

Don't know what to tell you about the leather. I wear it in summer, both as breeches and doublets. Let it dry when you take it off before you pack it up and you should be OK. Depends on the leather, too. If your talking a heavy veg tan, then when it gets damp or wet, it will take the new shape and hold it. Some lighter weight leathers, especially those made for clothing or upholstery won't stretch when wet and will hold their shape better.

Most 'bondage' leather is of the heavy veg tan type, belt weight or better and will not take being wet well, unless it is well soaked in waterproofers and surface glosses.

On one of my other lists, there's been quite a discussion going about bodices of the late 16th and 17th centuries. Seems that ladies of fashion and court wore them cut below the nipple with most of the breast exposed. Sometimes there might be a *very* sheer chemise, but not always. This was not a working girl's fashion, either. There's a famous woodcut of Queen Mary (of William and Mary) with her bodice cut completely under the breats and no chemise covering them at all.

Who wants to model one for us, eh?

I will!!

I will nominate Nigel to model it..

and Phil, B and D is okay at the right times, but not in a leather bodice in 90 degree heat. I've had heat stroke once, and that was enough.. but I do have some nice over the knee boots i love to wear for Pirate garb.

NOT b and d.
