Kate Souris
I shoulda mentioned that....I use the half moon reeding too. And I am really tough on my stays. They take beatings...
LadyBrower
I'm going to purchase some of the full oval for my next set (ugh). But for now, do you think that doubling it up flat to flat would have the same effect? Unfortunately I can't wait for new stuff to come it because I actually need the stays done for a class presentation on Thursday. (I am very excited to wear my garb to school. I will be doing it for another class too, I think. Yey!) I'm still a little confused on the busk too. One of the drawings at the beginning of the thread looked like the busk wasn't in a pocket at all. Just a little bit and then it looks almost laced in. Am i seeing this correctly? If so, I may try that as it looks like it makes the buck easy to remove if needed. =) Thanks for you help ladies. Lily Alexander
Let's see if this makes any sense. The two pieces combined really didn't change in strength that much compared to full oval. I took two pieces of half oval and placed them flat side to flat side. They were still very flexible after doubling. Maybe there will be more of a difference when inside a boning channel. It's hard to say what you should or shouldn't do. I would try it and then if you don't like it, you could always change it or leave it as is and use the stays as working stays and the full reed boned ones as your good set. Let us know how it turns out. Someone correct me if I am wrong but it can be done both ways. The busc in my ball gown isn't in a pocket. LadyBrower
Someone correct me if I am wrong but it can be done both ways. The busc in my ball gown isn't in a pocket. How do you have it fastened? I'm sorry, I feel like I am being dense again. It's these little details that keep getting my hung up. And I must thank you ladies again, I keep coming back and looking at your stays for reference as I am working on mine.. =) Cook and Seamstress to the Half Moon Marauders Lady Brower's Treasures, Clothing and other treasures Hell Hath No Fury like the Wrath of a Woman... Lily Alexander
This is how mine is put into place. It's not correct but it works (for now). I believe the ribbon is supposed to be at the bottom where the holes in the busc are. Although as tight as the bodice is, I can't imagine any gentleman having my favor would be able to get his arm in there to remove the ribbon. LadyBrower
huh. I actually have a tapered busk. I'm guessing that's not right? The holes are at the top of it too. I like the way you have that put in. How does it look in the front? Did you make it decorative? I was thinking that embroidery would look lovely, but I doubt that is correct. Thank you so much for the picture. Lily Alexander
The mystery of the busc. Your welcome. This is the only busc I have that has holes in it. The rest are plain tapered wood. I did have to have my hubby shorten them and I suppose he could have put the holes in them as well. Do you mean the front of the bodice? You can't tell it's there. No it's not decorated. I have read that they were decorated though. I would love to see examples of them. Capt. Sterling
just curious as to the length of the busk... does yours run from top of the corset to the bottom point? In the one picture, looks a little short... "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... In the one picture, looks a little short... The busk is 12". No, not really. It goes from about an inch or so from the top to the bottom point. It has shifted downward somewhat so it should be repositioned. LadyBrower
Lacing... I've tried ribbons but they don't seem sturdy enough. Anyone have a suggestion on what to use/ where to get it? Many thanks! LadyBrower
These stays are the bane of my existence these past two weeks... This may be a stupid question... directed more towards Kass I suppose, but anyone who has used the 1670-1720 Stay pattern (RH711). Are they supposed to be off the shoulder? Because it seems to me that the only way they fit properly is to put the straps on the very outside fall of my shoulders, otherwise the back top doesn't fit at all. The pattern in Corsets and Crinolines (page 38) looks like it is suppose to be off shoulder, but it also says that the piece it is based from was probably a court dress because of the style of "day robes" were back up on the shoulder, though it also says it is similar to the stays worn by the effigy of the Duchess of Richmond 1701-1702, but then it says (c. 1680). Should I rip off the binding and try to reposition the straps to sit more on the shoulder? I'll post pictures tonight once I find my memory card.... as always, your advice is much appreciated. Capt. Sterling
No leave your straps as is, the earlier stays did run just off the shoulder point "I being shot through the left cheek, the bullet striking away great part of my upper jaw, and several teeth which dropt down the deck where I fell... I was forced to write what I would say to prevent the loss of blood, and because of the pain I suffered by speaking."~ Woodes Rogers Crewe of the Archangel http://jcsterlingcptarchang.wix.com/creweofthearchangel# http://creweofthearchangel.wordpress.com/
LadyBrower
Great. =) I was concerned because a lot of the others I have seen are more on the shoulder, and the gowns were on the shoulder as well so I was all manner of concerned. LadyBrower
=) Thank you very much. *blush* I wore the outfit to school today and I was pleased to find them very comfortable, although driving took a bit of adjusting, next time I will remove the busk before I get in the car... and runner is rather difficult, but that's to be expected.
