I need a latin translation for the Bilgemunky.com slogan, "pirateyness is next to godliness". Anyone able to help?

I tried running a google search for a latin version of "cleanliness is next to godliness" in the hopes I would get the bulk of the phrase and then only have "pirateyness" to contend with, but no luck. And I hate to babelfish a word for word translation, as these are unreliable, and grammar may be lost in the process.

Anyways, I need a good, accurate translation - if anyone can help, it would be much appreciated.

Yar.

Hey, thanks! If you're able to come up with the translation, please also let me know what it would literally mean (since I doubt pirateyness can be directly translated.)

My assumption would be something like "To be pirate-like is to be god-like" would be more possible - but that you'll have to tell me.

:rolleyes:

Bilge monkey.....

here is what me looking found....

piracy= latrocinium

pirate= praedo

piratical=piraticus,paedatorius

godlike=divinus

godliness= pietas, ergo deos=like god

godly=pius

godless=inpius

to be like= ergo

next { as an adjective} =proximus

so you have a couple of ways of phrasing it.....

latrocinium /piraticus/paedotorius ergo proximus peitas

or

latrocinium ergo proximus divinus

or you can spin it around and say peitas proximus latrocinium

i did NOT check out the correct cadence of verb before or after stufola... i was more intent on getting you close to waht you wanted rather than perfect latin grammar... have a feeling yah want others to check out the meaning{ use their cranium contents}.....

HAVE FUN!

If you would be so kind as to allow me to hijack this thread for a brief minute.

Lady Canstance, I was looking for a Latin translation for :

"Family transcends blood"

If you could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Bilge, thanks for letting me pirate the thread for a bit :huh:

Arr I be butting in ye conversation, for this I apologise.

I don't speak Latin (although I'd give up rum for a year to be able too) but me fellow pirates at the Heavy Metal Pirate Brotherhood (ok maybe nae a year but a wee while) have a motto: Nunc Est Bibendum which be Latin for Now Is The Time To Drink!! YArrrHa Ha Ha! B)

The Feared and Ruthless Captain Drake Flint

"YARR! Roaming the seas, I take what I find; gold, wenches and mead, the pirates life is mine!"

familiae superare sanguis== family transends blood

or

familiae excellere sanguis

and mea culpa mea culpa mea maxima culpa...

= my fault/sin, my fault/sin , my greivous fault/sin

sorry that it has taken me soooooooooo long....

my husbadn reminded me to post what has been hanging out of the latin text book... he said screw the tenses!
