  1. Guys, I was speaking in absolutes. About the Campbells, though, not the coat.
  2. not pink... for sure not pink LOL Though popular, it certainly wasn't pink. sad  /sæd/ –adjective, sad⋅der, sad⋅dest. 1. affected by unhappiness or grief; sorrowful or mournful: to feel sad because a close friend has moved away. 2. expressive of or characterized by sorrow: sad looks; a sad song. 3. causing sorrow: a sad disappointment; sad news. 4. (of color) somber, dark, or dull; drab. 5. deplorably bad; sorry: a sad attempt. 6. Obsolete. firm or steadfast.
  3. Well, the murder, rape and pillage was par for the course. But being a poor houseguest? Inexcusable.
  4. I think it's telling that none of the shirts are called cotton. Holland cloth I believe was linen, osnabrig I always thought was a blend, and I am at a loss for 'dowlas.' Anyway, it looks as though linen was the most common, by far, according to the sample.
  5. Thanks for the info, Foxe! I don't know how many hours you must spend reading. :) Is anyone else surprised that there are NO red breeches? I believe the ASC of 1706 specified red breeches. EDIT: As well ticken ones, I think. Or am I confusing contracts? Anyway, any theories about that? I always assumed that the slops contract would make up a pretty big percentage of common sailor's clothing, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all.
  6. You are a man filled with many truths, sir.
  7. If we want to attract merchant ships, according to my marketing books we should call it "Blue Ocean."
  8. Oh, and thanks to everyone for their good wishes! We appreciate it!
  9. OMGROTDLMAO.... Oh I am not going to ever forget this one... and Matt, if you think reenacting is expensive... and you think kids are expensive... try adding them both together... I actually plan on trying that in a few years... I'll ask Brian to save the clothes he made for his nephew... and if I have a beautiful daughter, well, Rats' girls will have outgrown their outfits, too... Plus I have so many odds and ends of fabric that I don't think I'll run out of material for a little one...
  10. Matt has been fiesty lately, with no good reason. He will try to be more civil in the future.

  11. yes, yes, this is what I meant. I wouldn't necessarily call a checked coat tartan. I had it backwards. [quote name='Foxe' date='28 January 2010 - 04:33 PM' timestamp='1264718017' post='378394' And as always I would remind readers that anything I post is only ever intended to add to the bank of knowledge and understanding, never intended to belittle. And this, too, much classier and supportive than what I typed. I should laud your fine accomplishments in tailoring, rather than get caught up in the minutia of competing definitons. I make no apology for my comments on Campbells, however.
  12. Wow, I am not sure I agree with that statement at all, but this might be an example of defining our terms. For one thing, windowpane checks really don't look much like plaid at all, except for the whole right angles thing. Though a little bit out of period, William Mosman's 1749 portrait of John Campbell shows a fairly simple plaid that is still complex, compared to checks*. I think it's more accurate to say that plaid is much more like multiple checks overlaid next to each other. So I guess I should ask you what you think of when you think of a checked pattern? I don't care what you wear, nor do I think it is unreasonable to wear a tartan coat, but I don't think it is accurate to say that a tartan coat IS a checked coat. Your coat, however, does look GOOD. *Being a Campbell, though, it's entirely possible that portrait is compromised by the subject's untrustworthy and devious manner.
  13. Yeah, I think it's going to be way more expensive than reenacting...
  14. There's going to be a new pirate in town...
  15. Michael, have you seen that wool that is contracted to original unit specs? I believe it is made under contract to James Kochan and Sean Phillips. It's the stuff that sells for $56 a yard, or something like that. You don't have to worry about that stuff unraveling any more than you have to worry about your hat!
  16. Oh, I plan on owning the brewery, lady B. I'll just hire Michael to do the actual brewing. And then I'll start a print shop, rock this party Ben Franklin style.
  17. Does this town have a brewery? I think this town needs a brewery. I'll hire Mickey Souris as brewmaster.
  18. That would interfere with my franco-political agitation. *sigh* Fine. Happy birthday, you guys.
  19. Man, both of these cats are long-time members... why don't they each get their own threads?
  20. One thing I've never understood is how a camera can capture an image of a ghost when the human eye can't. They both work by collecting light, right?
  21. Dear God, Callenish, I wish this site had a rep system so i could give you the accolades you deserve.
  22. Looks pretty good. Do you have a favorite brand of plaster?
  23. Mission, that is some good reading. Thanks. I actually sent it to some coworkers who wanted to know how the trip was.
