  1. I worked at an ice cream shop in Door County, WI, and on the busy days(Or, I guess, the slow ones, too) I would enter tain myself by knife throwing at the walls in the stock room. I was never very good at the spinnin type of throw one would use for a tomahawk, but I was pretty good at the straight throw, from about twelve feet away. I'd like to try hawk throwing. I dabbled in it in boy scouts (because I was a naughty scout) but never really gave it a good go. Now I live in the city, and I can pretty much write that off as impossible.
  2. Well, I've started two kits. One is luxurious, decadent and thoroughly synthetic. The other is much simpler, and all natural. The wool I have for my coat looks pretty nice, actually. It's not felted, and the thread count is very thick, but it looks like something that could've been woven on a loom. When I cut out all the parts for my frock I discovered that I don't have enough, though, so I'm trying to find a similarly colored, hundred-percent wool fabric of a similar weight to flesh out the skirt, but I've had no luck. The synthetic is a black and gold and red chinese dragon print brocade that was so loud and gaudy I could't resist. It'll look grand as the lining and waistcoat for a red velvet frock. The velvet will also be synthetic. I know not everyone can afford two rigs, but my boots, slops, shirts, sashes and striped skivies will pull double duty for both outfits. I really can't afford two outfits, either, on what I make, so I'm assembling my kits piece by piece. I also plan on trying to get into treking, and so I expect my equipment will pull double duty there, as well.
  3. Once again, I can't attest to their usability, but try the axes at http://www.gggodwin.com/
  4. Did ye check out the swords from Godwin? That's how I ran across them. Not the biggest selection, but reasonably priced alternatives to the standard pirate blade. Of course, I have yet to get a decent pirate blade, much less alternatives, so i can't attest to their quality. perhaps someone else has used their blades?
  5. The Sutler of Mount Misery, G. Gedney Godwin, offers 18th century medical instruments. http://www.gggodwin.com/
  6. On this your birthday, annie B., I hope to offer the best Pirate Blessing ever: May you live to spend it!
  7. Thank ye both. I can't remember a greater resource I've discovered then the kind and generous folks on this board.
  8. I've heard a lot of talk about 18th century backpackers. To tell ye the truth, I live an hour in either direction from two grand moraines and I love to pack. Can anyone give me more info on these sort of groups? I'm in Wisconsin.
  9. There's an emu farm in Door County, WI. Don't know if that's close to you.
  10. Shoot. If you want to get technical, let's just say that Jack actually did own the Black Pearl. So he assembled the crew, they took over the ship and marooned him, and thus is it mutiny. If Jack hired them, even if they were pirates, they were working in the capacity of a crew for a captain. Even if they were working "no prey, no pay," as did Captain Kidd's crew, if they didn't elect Jack captain in the first place, if he hired them, well, then it sounds like mutiny. But I love my baseless conjecture. So, who wants to party? Woo-hoo! *Does a foolish little party dance*
  11. Tho' not in the play, I once performed the Major Gineral song at a public library.
  12. *Looks at the keg he's sitting on, looks at EP's giant fist, yelps and jumps off*
  13. That's a good way to put it....man, I'd be screwed. I can't even understand my neighbor's kids.
  14. Yeah, try http://www.barzso.com http://www.michtoy.com http://www.toyknight.com I hope these links work.
  15. That reminds of the time I watched a movie called "Riff Raff" with Robert Carlisle and it had to be subtitled because everyone's accents were so thick. And the best part - it wasn't just one accent. It were accents from all over! It was glorious! I felt like I was watching a cross section of the british empire. "My Name is Joe" also had to be subtitled, but that was very depressing, and everyone was Scottish, so the audible experience wasn't as varied.
  16. Have you checked out the "pirate mini" or the "mini pirate" thread? That's good for developing your own pirate crew.
  17. Richard Hatch was the first winner, and he's gay, and he is coming back. Rudy Boesch, who is, I believe, a navy SEAL plank owner, is also coming back, in the original series, placed- what? Third? Because the show was all about BS politics and double dealing, and not about survival, I didn't like the show then, and I don't like it now. Rudy Boesch would have survived circles around those punks. And "Survivor?" It's more like "Boy Scout Jamboree Lite with even Whinier Kids TV." Don't mean to rant. Just think it's a wasted premise.
  18. Bob Hoskins discusses how difficult it is to learn certain accents due to the transitional nature of certain communities: http://www.theonionavclub.com/avclub3314/b...eature3314.html Maybe the same applies to pirates and seamen? With all the outside influences they would have had....
  19. Of course! That's the only way you can custom design the caves in the island for each adventure.
  20. Look under 'BootStrap Bill' thread under "Pirate Pop.'
  21. It's nice to see that BarkerTown offers a knee-length sleeved waistcoat. It frees up some of the transitional time periods, since late Restoration and early Georgian waistcoats (and frock coats) were knee-length, longer than F&I and Rev War garments, and usually sleeved, at least according to this great old book about historical dress and costuming I have.
  22. It seems like they could make a boarding axe, easily. If they only put their minds to it......
  23. Same here. I remembered him palming the coin, and waited to see what they'd do with it. Then I forgot he had a coin. And when he got stabbed, I thought "That's obviously pretty fatal. If he continues to fight, or passes out and wakes up in time to save some people, and then is okay, I'm gonna be pissed." Then, of course, he became a zombie pirate. Now, I thought that they reason why they were skeletons was that they'd had the coins long enought to be decayed, so when I saw Jack all skellington, I first thought "Not Fair!" but then I realized that it's Gore Verbinski's movie, and if he wants to make everybody be a skeleton when they get cursed, well, they can be a skeleton. They didn't say anything that expressively contradicted immediate skeletonization, but still, at the time, I was cheesed. But I've come to terms with it.
