Dissecting GAoP costume Part 1: Reade and Bonny
JoshuaRed replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Captain Twill
Yeah, my thought is that Anne Bonney would have gotten away with it for some time, had Mary Read not also come on board. I think Jack knew of Anne long before the crew in general did, and furthermore I think that once the crew knew, they were ok with it. Whether that was from her skill as a sailor, prowess as a drinker or fighter, or whether Jack "shared" her with the crew, we'll never know. Maybe it was all of the above. -

A boarding axe is just as likely if not more likely than a hanger. It was a heavily favored sea weapon. That is entirely accurate. -
Yeah what's the deal with Ren Faires anyway? C'mon! Maybe when they first became popular most people dressed the part proper to the era, but nowadays it's utterly laughable. Why don't they change the name to Fantasy Faire or GetYourKillBillSwordHere Faire?

Foxe thanks for posting that pic of Woodes Roger's men..that is a classic that I was just looking at the other day in one of my books. One of the few spot on pictures that shows just what we're looking for. I just wish I could find a large version! Greg, I always thought the Bonny/Read pic you posted originally WAS from Johnson's GH...but the source I found today says different, not that it really matters, as the picture seems pretty accurate. Hooray for small buckles and low tongues! If anyone needs small buckles, I recommend G.Godwin, a dealer in Valley Forge. I bought 1" buckles from him and they are great. Back to the Bonney and Read art. It is most definitely sensationalized, with the long hair and boobs. Although there is an account of Anne Bonney flashing her boobs to all the ships in New Providence harbor as Rackham put to sea once. -

Although done in 1896, this engraving is pretty good. I haven't seen this one till now. You can easily see here the influence Pyle was having already, even among his contemporaries. Now, according to The Mariner's Museum in VA, the engraving you posted Greg, was done in 1829 for "The History of the Pirates: Containing the Lives of Those Noted Pirate Captains, Misson, Bowen, Kidd, Tew, Halsey, White, Condent, Bellamy, Fly, Howard, Lewis, 1829 " -

Funny, they're actually near identical. Both have a brace of pistols on their baldrics, a cutlass and axe. Both have slops/trousers, shoes, short jackets, and something on their heads that could be kerchiefs, but obviously aren't being used to constrain hair. -
WANTED "the cut of mens clothes" by Waugh

I understand. It took me 4 months to track down a nice vintage set of Dampier's collected works. It was only printed TWICE in the 20th Century, one in 1906 and one in 1968. My copy is the 1906 edition, which was the only one prior to the 60's publishing. And beyond THAT, it gets very pricey. :) -

Wow Greg, this "Cut of Men's Clothes" book IS hard to find! Even abebooks only has the "Cut of Women's Clothes".... -
...and here it is! Is that not fine?!?
-
I saw it in person and it's STUNNING. Kass, the quality of that far surpassed anything in the entire building! Hold on a sec, lemme see if I have a better pic of it's detail....
-
I've bought more things online than I can count and never had a problem other than things being backordered.... Now then: HOW can Goonies be a good pirate movie? There are no pirates in it!! It's a good kid adventure movie, like Stand By Me. And just HOW could a good stiff wind blow from inside the cave to push that rotten galleon out to sea? Oh man I don't like to started on Goonies because I can't stop! Order Casablanca from Amazon! You won't be taken advantage of, and will enjoy one of if not the greatest films of all time.

Yeah, Hogarth is quickly surpassing Vermeer and Rembrandt as my favorite artist. You won't find ANY 18th century art with more humor and personality than Hogarth. Talk about a man ahead of his time. In the "Idle Apprentice" you can almost hear the conversation on that boat. Son: "Momma PLEASE don't make me this! I don't wanna go to sea!" *Mother crying*: "Son, I'm sorry. It's your father's doing! If only you were a better apprentice at the wigmakers." Sailor 1: "Psst! Hey lubber! If'n the captain don't like ya, he'll make ya clean his pisspot wit' yer tongue! Oh, and ever see one o' these afore? (Holding the cat o' nines) If'n the captain REALLY don't like ya, he'll peel the hide from yer bum with it! " Sailor 2 (laughing): "Yeah boy! And anudder thing! We got's a big brawny bosun' what just loves ta share a dark corner o' the hold wit' fresh lil' pinkies like yerself!" -

Yes, along with a slightly-late Hogarth's "The Idle Apprentice Turn'd To Sea". -
Oh boy my son LOVES that one! "...and I've never been to Boston in the fallllllll!"
-
I don't think the blame rests solely on Pyle or Stevenson. They were drawing from a building "nostalgic romance" of piracy that increased throughout the 19th century. Perhaps this original notion was based on Drake, and over the decades became associated with all seafarers.
-
Yes but wasn't Every quite young while in the RN? Like 15?

Hats, Foxe. That would be great! Cocked, monmouth, whatever is in it. Details of various cockades, trim, etc. Many thanks! :) -
John, you ever play AH's Blackbeard? I always enjoyed that game. It had one aspect that no other pirate game has - the possibility of your character losing limbs!
-
Wow neat parlor trick, John! Do it again! Move more stuff around!
-
I got a bigazz bag of tow from Townsend - nice stuff. Their strikers aren't the hottest though.
-
Cool Siren - I didn't know you were a gamer! Sweet!
-
Thanks das and Foxe! That's exactly what I was getting at, was the "official" birth of grog.
-
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't proper grog only date back to circa 1740-50? For our period it was probably lack of smallbeer or punch?
-
Hmm I have had zero probs with it on my rig...and a patch from Firaxis is forthcoming btw. Hang in there!
