  1. I still wanta see 'Jack Sparrow meets American McGee's Alice'!

Perhaps Jack, on his way t' find th' fountain o' youth in that li'le dingy, could get suck'd down a maelstrom where he finds he'm self in a demented world with sirens 'n a Cheshire version o' a Sphinx 'n a big hookah smoke'n sea serpent! Then Amphitrite could run around scream'n "T' Th' Locker With He'm!!" 'n they could play underwater croquet with seahorses they hold upside down by their tails!

Now I Would Stand In Line Fer That!!

  2. Hav'en been born 'n raised in Southern Calieforniea but beeing from th' valley yet hang'n at th' beach throughout th' 70's (valley skateboarders vs beach surfers - "uh, like ya dude, shred that!") but then go'n t' th' Mid West (St Louise, MO) then on t' th' East Coast (Fort Benning, GA) then o'er t' Germany where I lived out 'on th economy', where for a good solid year or more I became almost fluent in German, one dialect at least - by th' time I gots back t' Californiea when I would meet new people I was oft asked "Where ARE ye from lad? I can not tell by yer accent!".

Me first year back t' th' west I not only got lost go'n t' th' store in th' very town I grew up (seriously! I got lost go'n just 5 blocks 'n ended up driving for over an hour t' find me way home!! Ended up in Eagle Rock!?!) But me speak had turn'd int' a hodge-pogg o' whatever I could muster out between me tongue 'n teeth!!! An' when I told them I was born 'n raised Right Here, they often just look'd at me with blank disbelief ;)

As fer 'accents', I just can not do them at all, I am one that can not even recognize me own voice when I hears it on a record'n play'd back at me - as fer spelin, I n'er have been a good speler (Thank Neptune Fer Spell Checkers!!), I have always been told I spell fenetickally (that be phonetically t' ye skool mums 'n genteelmen).

But it does make me wonder; pirates, and sailors, them what 'lived by the sea', especially them what would be said t' "have no country" and would make port where ever they could and NOT just within ports of their own countrymen - would they have suffered the same 'identity crisis' as did I on me own 7 year tour o' th' world?

Seeing as how many often could not read or write anyway, and many who perhaps tried where probably worse then I even at it. I have seen it written in many ways that seamen of period often "had a language of their own" and used "words not known to proper gentlemen".

Now of course if a re-enactor be seeking other re-enactors of the same port and nationality then one might say "Where are all my countrymen?" and yes I do see some words such as 'Aye' being used incorrectly (even by a naive, uneducated sailor who can not read or write) and as for "Ahrrr", I have lately taken to giving back the response t' those who say that by saying "Ahhh matie, I also know me A, B, C's as well!!" or "S, T, U, V t' ye too mate!" (aye, I try t' avoid 'Ahrrr' but sometimes it is just plain fun; and I do love those ol' Long John Silver movies!)

As fer 'accent voice', I don't really try to use one at all yet I find I do, as fer th' words I just try t' follow some simple guides - drop the 'g' when ending in 'ing', drop some 'e' at th' end o' some words but not all, use 'n' for 'and', use he'm (heam) fer him, then toss in any nautical words 'n phrases I can come up with.

Nay, I naught try t' use any 'proper English' at'll, but then again; thar be NO English in me blood, neither in real life nor in character, so Why would I?!?

(if'n ye be wonder'n; me mum's family, th' Allison clan, hails from Ireland while me da's family, th' Madl clan, hails from th' Black Forest region o' Germany. Aye, there be an English born great great grandmum on me mum's side as well as an American Indian married int' her side as well; but me da's side be pure blood German right through me da's generation....he's parents 'n me mum's parents would not even stand in th' same room t'gether, they hated each other t' their die'n day)

So how about this li'l ditty I wrote up a few year back fer X-mas, I submitted it t' Bilge Munky and he tried t' read it on air, he gave up after th' first couple paragraph fer he could not make it out....yet others have read it and say they had no trouble at'll (of course there be a wee bit o' creativeness here 'n thar t' make rhyme):

    ~ Twas the Eve Before X-mas ~

As recalled by Captain Santa Clause, aka Whitebeard

Twas th' Eve before X-mas, when all through th' ship

Naught a creature was stirring, naught even th' ghost of old crewman Nick.

The cutlasses where all hung in th' ship's haul with care,

    In hopes that a ship full of booty soon will sail na'r;

Th' crew were nestled all snug in their hung beds,

Whilst visions of virgin whores danced in their heads.

And Mary Ormond in her 'kerchief, and I in me tricorn nightcap,

Had just settled down for a long night's nap,

When out off th' bow there arose such a clatter,

I sprang ta the poop deck ta see what was th' matter!

Away ta th' deck I flew like a flash,

Tore open a powder keg and threw back me sash.

Th' moon on th' horizon caused th' calm sea waves ta glow

Gave th' luster of Davey Jones' treasure down below,

When what ta me bewilder'n eyes should appear,

But two small ships, and eight tiny cannons all aimed at me rear,

With a scurvy nave at their helm, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be that dog Lt. Maynard on that thar ship!

More rapid then frenzied sharks his corsairs did came,

    And he shouted and cursed, and called them by name;

"Now Shorty! On deck Pete! on, Fletcher and William!

To the crow's nest with ye Morgan, All others man th' guns!

Now heave men! Heave! Ready them cannons! Ready them all!

As a cursed black plague on a wild hurricane they did fly,

One went starboard, the other port, as dark clouds began ta form in th' sky.

With cannons on th' ready and guns at their side these corsairs did flew

With blood in his eyes and saber a rattl'n, Lt. Robert Maynard did too.

And then, as I blinked me one good eye, I felt a crack in me tooth,

As the explosions of those eight tiny cannons blew from th' helm me galley's roof!

As I drew out me pistols, and began to return fire,

Me crew came a husselin, some without even any attire.

Most were dressed and ready, and all armed from head ta their foot,

    From the explosions their clothes where dirtied with ashes and soot;

But me crew tis th' bastards o' th' sea, ta arms they took up

Like an army o' mad sea-dogs they are, and nay a one a pup!

Me one good eye -- how it twinkled! Th' smell of battle, how bloody merry!

Me cheeks lit with delight, for suddenly Maynard didn't look so cheery!

    His beardless face had just turned as white as snow;

Th' stump o' me pipe I held tight in me teeth,

    And th' smoke it encircled me head, just like a wreath;

Maynard, his face grew red with fire

As me crew tooks their aim and I yelled "RETURN FIRE!"

Oh how his tiny ships they shook like jelly

And I laughed so hard it shook me belly.

With a wink o' me eye and twist o' me head,

    Soon ol' Maynard, he knew there be much ta dread;

    As th' muskets red glare,

    The cannons burstin' in air;

    Gave proof through th' night,

That me Jolly Rodger still be thar!

Me crew spoke naught another word, but continued their work,

And filled th' cannons with lead; then returned it ta that jerk.

And as Maynard's two tiny ships sank out o' sight,

    I hallard out with all o' me might;

"Merry Bloody X-Mas Maynard; Me Foe And Me Friend,

For It Be Ye And NAUGHT I That Has Finally Met Yer End!"

earlier I was listen'n t' me Jethro Tull collection: ROCKS ON THE ROAD!!

  4. I think it is around 6oz, I did not purchase it me self but it was given t' me...fer favor not yet declared ;)

Yes, it be 'tooling' leather (Vegetable tanned)

I also just found out, quite by accident, that leather looks quite fine when tarred with Stolkholm tar!!! Really, it soaks in fast, dries very well, and has a Sweet smell! It darkens the leather a tad, makes it stiffer, oh and did I mention the Sweet smell?!!

    ;)

  5. Privateering was legal, and considered an act of warfare. Piracy was illegal, and considered an act of theft. The decency of each will vary, for a given value of decency.

Ah, but here be where ye enter very murky waters mate, ye speak as if everyone be on Yer side o' coin...

Depending upon where one stands a 'privateer' is every much a 'pirate' as the next and every much 'illegal' and will be shot and/or hung upon site.

Now of course if everyone was indeed on 'your' side and hailed from 'your' country then what ye say would hold water.

Example: what about those ships (can't think of a particular off hand but ye surly can from yer above statements) that went to war for the Queen of England, but upon their return found they were labeled a "pirate" for they did not get the word to stop fighting in time - 'Privateer' or 'Pirate'? (some even say 'hero' but none the less they were taken or shot upon as 'pirate')

And what about Blackbeard during the period that he left he's mates and took a bride (forgive me I do not run and look up all the location names, but I am sure ye know of what I speak - or can look it up yer self) - he made an accord with th' local governor that he would Only take foreign ship and legal salvage and would split the takings with the governor - would this not at that time make him a "privateer"? But of course as history tells the story he did not stick t' he's accord and indeed committed acts of 'piracy' behind th' governor's back; some say with full knowledge of the governor who chose t' stay ignorant as long as he was getting a share - so, during this period what Blackbeard a 'privateer' or 'pirate' or simply a common thief?

Or even more so t' stand on me comment lets take a clear cut example: Sir Henry Drake

He sailed with letter o' marque from th' Queen - 'privateer' (Private Men of War)? or 'pirate'?

How about ye go ask a Spaniard...

Aye, I do realize this be 'Captain Twill' and we stick t' "facts and only facts" here, and aye, I do realize that most members here be American with a few Englishmen toss'd in - But facts be facts; one man's privateer is in FACT another man's pirate and one man's pirate is in FACT another man's hero.

Being an American who's parents on either side hail from neither England, Britain, France, nor Spain, I tend t' look at things from all sides before casting judgment. But th' judgment I cast be that of mine and mine alone.

Further; having grown up in a town full of 'gangs' but having been 'anti-gang' all me life until one day a particular high school decided that me and my close friends (just good buds who hung out peacefully together and laughed as we watched th' Crypts, Bloods, Villa Street Boys, such walk by and mocked what kind of kids they must be t' join such folly) but the school had chosen that WE too where a "gang", the school even created a name for us, they called us "The Family" (???now where the 'ell did they get THAT??? - recall Charles Manson....?!? this was all set back in the mid-70s) - from that day fourth life had changed for we twelve high schoolers; gangs wanted t' challenge us, certain teachers had it in fer us...the story goes on, til finally we where all sent to separate schools "for the safety of others" the high school had told our parents (??!!?) - so, where we a 'gang' simply because the school said we where? or where we simply twelve high school kids (some of us even on the football team, and ALL with good grades!) or where we merely victims o' others perception and forced t' fight fer survival in a town gone unjust.

Sorry, but I find it hard t' cast judgment until I me own self has walked in th' other man's shoes, and often I wonder how much of the 'history book' had cast judgment the way my old high school had (of course not speaking of such as Blackbeard who was a self-proclaimed "pirate"...except for a short period)

So: 'Privateering' = legal but 'Pirate' = illegal

Sorry, I find both a blurred and, depending on which side ye stand, act of "Piracy"

They'd be privateers then - and there's nothing decent about disrupting British trade

Again, depends upon th' side o' th' pond ye stand upon...after all, this be "Captain Twill" as ye yer self once pointed out - History be History ;p

  6. westcoastpickers, actually I did find some dice t' suit me needs at Scarlet Scarab 'n Sutlerjon made me up some fine cups. However, perhaps some more information on th' dice ye hold? Size, details, coloration; perhaps they would fit th' ideal set fer that "Hands Off, These Be Mine" kinda dice

  7. I found mine on Ebay, ye really must look HARD and daily however to find any NOT sold for crazy price!

I got a lot of around 10 for $10, four I kept, a few I sold t' Oderlesseye 'n he's lovely wife. There be a couple left but they are not that good and they are small - all from a macaw.

Now ye know th' African Grey feathers are gonna be a bit difficult as they (red tail feathers) are said by some Indians t' posses special powers and therefore are highly sought after.

I would like t' find some other, non-parrot species, bird feathers; such as magpie ones (the Long black ones with a white tip) or some Birds of Paradise tail feathers 'n such....NO PEACOCKS! They be possessing EVIL LUCK!!! 'n no pheasant feathers fer they get ye locked up as a poacher!! And no swallow feathers as it be awfully bad luck t' kill one o' them!! However I do have a crow's feather and a gull's feather in me own hat but both where given freely t' me by their owners.

  8. Sounds then like a video card driver issue. I have read of some who have such issues with screen savers in some forums I frequent such at Serene Screen Marine Aquarium (www.SereneScreen.com) where I was at a lot during its early stages (only supports XP and Vista now and wont run on Win2K at all, new version that is). Often people would have to roll back their video drivers after an update as some games and Direct X stuff would stop working. Currently I have Marine Aquarium 2.6 that works great but I found some versions of my card's driver that it did not, I have a shark saver that stopped working at all and I don't want to go back to the old driver it did work on because of other issues - the shark saver is kinda like you describe, I can still hear the sound but the images are all gone, just a few flashes of light.

That is too bad, its really a finely crafted solo player game. Perhaps ye can find a friend's computer t' try it out on...

  9. vintage sailor; that be too bad. What OS are ye running, not that Vista is it?? I hear lots of stuff will not run on Vista that runs fine on most older OS'...also there has long been some issues with dual processors, some applications are not written to know how t' use them (Poser and many 3D graphics apps had issues when dual CPUs first came out). I have NO IDEA what this app is written in.

It ran smooth on the XP at school where I first downloaded (only 256M of ram and some oddball CPU that will not identify itself - it be a very cheap school!), and when I downloaded it on me Win200Kpro at home with 756M of Ram and only a PIII 850 I was not sure; it does give me a pop up telling me I do not meet the requirements and warns I may have performance issues - But it Runs great and smooth..

I just tried t' get a sceen grab but it refuses t' be captured??? The ships sail right on top o' yer desktop, but all I can capture be me desktop itself Minus th' ships, the floating powder keg mines, the occasional thunder storm cloud that tries t' mess up yer smooth sailing, the cannons blasting, the 'power ups' and loot that come and go (be quick t' grab them, and the enemy ship will try t' block ye too).

I have made it t' the second level of the third battle, Del Fuego, but first I had t' win me way through three level each in Port Royal and Tortuga!! Port Royal twas rather easy, Tortuga they began t' attack from Two side, but these Del Fuego pirates do NOT play fair!! They some time come at me with THREE ship at once!!! And them bloody exploding powder kegs!!!

Aye, Tartan Jack, tis too bad, Mac don't know Jack. But shouldn't the newer version o' Mac have extentions that allow them t' run PC based apps?? However this one is not just a simple app, I think it may be based in Direct X or something along them lines (seeing as it all floats ON TOP of the desktop the way it does).

HEY, vintage sailor, maybe that be it, have ye updated yer Direct X from Microsoft?? I think they up around version 9 or so now. And what about yer graphics card, have updated it's driver at all??

  10. Here be a grand game indeed, free but must play online - two bad as it would be a fine one for download.

Pirate's Dice - Liar's Dice, just like in th' movies: http://www.thepiratesrealm.com/games/PiratesDice.html

VERY well done, Excellent graphics, simple but Effective sounds.

It plays very well and CAN be beat; ye plays against Turner and Jack, ye signs yer name t' th' third player.

It plays very smooth, here be a few hints I have fer ye: Turner is a horrible liar, Jack is quick t' declare another a liar and gets frustrated if down t' just ye 'n him...play conservatively and ye just may save yer soul.

If not, then it be - T' DAVEY JONES' LOCKER WITH YE!!!

  11. Too bad McGregor does not offer th' real deal, with so much detail t' authenticity yet made from resin... also: $5 for a single resin die vs $3 for a pair of real bone (comparing Roman vs standard dots, but still...)

I like their description of Sheep's Knuckles! I wonder if that was played on ship during GAoP??

  12. Haunting Lily: Aye, those horn ones will do. A soaking in a sweaty rag should help t' give them that 'well used' look (bone turns color as it adsorbs th' salt from yer body, learned that with me Maori Hook necklace). Also a good red-hot rod should touch up the spots a bit.

Captain Satan: Aye, I already have a lead set, but they be a might heavy and make quite th' racket when tossed! Also I would imagine there would be some who may have a few words if they were tossed on their counter top...

  13. I have been seeking some dice made of Bone and not having much luck within the US, plenty of sources overseas where I must pay extra due t' our weak dollar, vat tax, overseas shipping, etc. But none within the US colonies??

Of course now I be seeking 'olden' looking dice, preferable ones that LOOK handmade (if not truly handmade) and not the new, shiny, obviously machine made ones that ye can find at any hobby shop.

Or, does anyone know where I can obtain raw bone that be solid through enough t' make me own? I need 5 total (perhaps even 10 or 20). But not antler bone, I would prefer bone from Inside a critter, or even ivory if it not be too expensive...yah, right!!

What I am seeking would be like these:

    UK - Gothic Green Oak

  14. Not sure but I think I recall have'n seen this posted a year or more ago but th' link would not work for me.

I just found this t'day while surfing and have found it a bit hard t' walk away from!

Desktop Galleon - and it be FREE (a pirate's favorite price!)

    http://www.piratesonlineforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1259

it be almost halfway down th' page, here be what they say:

Download now and embark on a high-seas adventure right on your desktop! As you progress through the different levels of this mini-game, you'll also earn exclusive pieces of concept art used to create Pirates of the Caribbean Online.

    Minimum System Requirements:

    Operating System: Windows 2000/XP

    Processor: 1.5ghz

    Memory: 256 MB RAM

Here be what I say: Choose yer ship's sail colors, name yer ship, then sail about yer own desktop (offline!) and blow them double sons of a ship's cook outta th' water!! Gather gold, golden cannons, sail th' winds, and all with some pretty cool sound effects t'boot!!

Only a 9meg download and it runs just fine on me own wee sloop with just a PIII 850Mhz and only 785K of Ram (it gives me a warning that I may have troubles, but none found yet! Smooth Sailing!!)

So..while I be on bed rest due t' a minor weapon accident (cleaning me cutlass with th' safety off 'n it shot me in th' foot! ;) ) I have someth'n t' do!!

  15. What about the story that Sam Bellamy was after his fortune so as t' prove t' he's love's father that he was worthy of her...the story even says that he may have even steered int' the path of the storm that sunk him because he was changing course t' go see her, or that be what some stories say. It would seem t' me that a man who goes t' sea t' make a fortune for t' win a woman's heart and hand would be rather decent, in me own peeper's way o' things any how.

Or ye can toss this one at yer opponent:

“Pirates who were hired by many countries, especially in times of war, were businessmen and capitalists of every background searching for a profit in the Atlantic Ocean. Governments armed pirates' ships and directed the pirates to attack ships of other warring countries. America even hired its own pirates to disrupt British trade ships during the War of Independence.â€

    ~ Frank Lambert

  16. Better late then never (unless it be t' me own funeral). I don't get much time of late so I will consolidate:

Cheeky Actress - Astounding gown! While I do not think they had belly dancers around in GAoP, least not in th' Caribbean nor th' colonies, I would certainly be as entranced with a fine lass in such a fine gown as I have been of late with a dozen belly dancing troupes!

Corsairs Boutique - Mighty Fine indeed, and aye, I will 'ignore the bodice fit' as ye ask (just soon as I photo shop this dancer's mid-drift in....AH, got it!!)

Tartan Jack - Me hat off t' ye sire! I still can not get them button holes right!! Bloody 'ell too as I want soon t' start on me new bag and need t' get them stitches straight!

I just got me new breeches in, but it seems I will need t' take them to th' tailor; for some reason I have a 44" waist but when I order breeches in th' size for 42"~46" they are always about 4"+ too large....?? With the back gusset tight all the way (which should fit a 42" waist) they fall right down...just like me last pair? Good thing I found a local tailor that, while he gives me strange looks, gives me good work for a cheap price (only $10 to take in me last pair)

I was however a bit surprised to discuss some of the details about this newest pair in comparison to me last couple pair. Concerning the gusset I was told that they could find no evidence of a back piece of cloth (sewn over where the 'V' is cut) where Mid-1600 to very Early-1700 designs are concerned. She told me they could not find a pattern that way until after 1730. Also this new pair (designed for 1650~1720 was my request) it is Much fuller then those I have gotten from Jastown or elsewhere that cater mainly to the civil war groups. The waist band is cut much thinner too and they said they fly is NOT covered the way Black Bear and Jas does. But she does fine work, all hand sewn on outter seams and only machined on parts not seen...not nearly as intricate as me shirt Captain Sterling did but with that finery I needed to step up the rest.

Now I just need to decide on a cravat with or without lace....?

OH, and this weekend I met a pirate who had a FINE coat, I asked him what it be made of and he told me "I don't know, is is the coat worn in the opening ball scene of Cutthroat Island" - no joke he said, the very same coat! He said he has been doing pirates for many years now. So I put that CD in last night to see - IT IS! The very same coat that the actor (whatshisname) wears when he jumps over the stair case and gets caught! - Nice Coat! Much detail!!

Here is a photo of him (one on the Right):

    gallery_6451_101_35357.jpg

and here is a new one of me with me new Dutch Cutlass (Windlass brand) visiting the Privateers of the Black Sail; aye, that be Captain Oberon's seat I am in, I dare him t' do someth'n about it too!!! HA!

    gallery_6451_101_305069.jpg

oh, and the conchos used on me sword belt are by RenFairPirate, the ones he made from Spanish coin. If anyone see's him then tell him I have a leather worker interested in buying some from him...I dropped him a couple messages but have not heard back as of yet...

  17. Nice Cod piece . :P

That naught be a cod piece :P

That be me shark tooth pricker fer t' clean out me pecker, th' rum flows thick this time o' year ye know

I am think'n o' stripping off th' leather from th' shell guard on me new Dutch cutlass, I read somewhere where someone found reference t' velvet being use'd and I think that would be nice. She be th' LAST one o' her kind that Windlass made, there aint be no more, but there is a another maker what now be make'n a Dutch style cutlass, a bit broader, heavier and with three blood grooves, I read mixed reviews about it so I was glad t' catch this last one from Windlass.

Now I need t' find some fine period type silk t' re-do me let tie garters, or perhaps some other fancy pattern linen, but silk would be nice. I have a piece o' leather sew'd inside them so they don't bunch up during th' day and they don't slip pass'd me calfs.

  18. Thank'ee much. Th' rope work is all me own using Stockholm tarred marline from American Rope & Tar except for the dagger scabbard what be un-tarred hemp from R&W Rope then I tarred it me own self after wrapping with genuine Stockholm.....smells purdy!

Still working on th' arrangement however; th' dagger can go either side but then I have t' fiddle with me pouch (needed fer me coin & camera - a magic box what takes pictures) as well as me ship keys ye know, also me eat'n knife as I no longer have boots t' tuck it int'....all reason fer two belts, I keep me pouch, protection charms (eye candy) and utilities on under-belt and killing equipment on sword belt; waist coat has two fine pockets just large enough fer two fine flasks o' rum ;p

  19. Me new late 1600 to early 1700 waistcoat by Quartermaster General

The wonderful shirt (what th' wind-not th' rum ruined me pose and now it don't show well) by Captain Sterling

Me new 'one o' a kind' Sword Belt and leather scabbard (posed on wrong side due t' much rum) commissioned by Barbossa Leather

    IMG_1306.jpg

Here be a much more better shot o' th' belt:

    IMG_1311.jpg

Detail of leather work on back:

    IMG_1310.jpg

Oh! I almost forgot (still drained from two days o' NorCal) - th' wonderful coin conchos on th' belt be from Fair Pirate here at th' pub as well!
