Ahoy all!
Benerson Little wrote me today with an interesting addendum to his book on buccaneers, the Buccaneer's Realm. It's about tentage during the buccaneer era.
Here it is:
Page 41, 2nd paragraph, mosquito netting. According the anonymous author of a pamphlet on making war against
the French and Spanish in the New World, boucaniers and others who traveled through the “woods or such like
places” had “his pavilion to sleep under, and defend him from gnats....This pavilion is made of thin canvas, in such a
form that, being spread and supported upon some sticks planted in the ground, a man lies under it, the canvas falling
like the curtains of a bed, and so leaves no room for gnats to get in. The man has his fusee [flintlock musket]
between his legs, and lies upon some grass or leaves, and in a march carries his pavilion like a shoulder-belt....This
is the buccaneers fashion, and by these means their incampments are soon made and soon raised.” (See Anon.
“Proposals for Carrying on an Effectual War in America, Against the French and Spaniards.”
His work on Pyrate Hunters is on hold until a dispute with the publisher is resolved. Sorry, Sterling!

Wow Skynner, that is great looking!
I wish I had the time or patience for that kind of work... But the last thing I need is another hobby...
Thanks, Mate. An exercise of patience I promise you. I can't say it's a craft I'll continue, but I had to try it.

Ashleys Book of knots should have it.... but I haven't seen a copy, so yer stuck with Hervey Garrett Smith's commonly avalible book....
Here it is on Amizon.... but it's an easy book to find..... (and you may be able to find it cheaper if you keep yer eyes peeled...)

Sadly, I will miss the exhibit. No more Christmas and summer trips to the Field Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, and the Shedd Aquarium for us. My mother-in-law sold her house in IL last week and now calls FL home.

Aces!
You rock dude!
I want to party on your spaceship!
I've forwarded this pic to the missus. I'm sure she'll get a kick out of it too. I may just have to buy her some Alliance money for Xmas. I've contemplated getting her the series on bluray. The show looks pretty good in hidef.
Get her the series, BlackJohn. I watch 2 or more episodes every feew months. Great show.
Thank you. I don't know what it is about firefly money, but there seems to be a little counterfeiter in every graphic artist. My Serenity inspired bills...
William, just so I'm clear, I take it you created these bills?

Sounds like the beginnings of a Buccaneer Camp Fire Cookoff!

Nice looking tent Sir. Yard looks good too. The scene needs a few things; Rum barrels, empty onion bottles, etc.

Hello ,
just joined this forum , I was born and raised in the Carolinas, home of Blackbeard, I've always enjoyed Pirate history, I believe I might have some Pirate blood in me family.
The Carolinas is loaded with all kinds of pirate history.
Yes, where in the Carolinas? Others living the Carolinas want to know.

I experienced this... tried to log-in on Saturday morning and my McAffee scanner popped up saying a virus was detected.
Ditto.

My orginial patterns did include pockets inside, but changed my mind. However, I may modify this one in the future. I'm currently working on my first leather bottles, so modifications to the pouch is on the back burner for now.
Making more? The thought has crossed my mind.

Bueatiful as always Mr. Skinner!
Can I ask what you used for the toggle? It's kind of hard to tell from those photos... Wood? Bone? Antler? Tightly rolled pale leather?
Piece of wooden dowel I had laying around. It will do for now. I have not found the "right" button yet. I thought about using gold coin as a button, but that may be too flashy. Maybe I'll use a human finger bone from a bag of Bucky Bones.
Thanks for the compliments everyone.

I can't wait to see pics and tales of your adventures in Port Royal.

I just finished this cartridge pouch based on this picture I found in "The British Army 1660-1704" By John Tincey & Gerry Embleton.

I based my baldric on these pics when I make it.
I decided to stay with same basic design for the frog of my Sword Belt that I'm working now. It's almost done.

POTC1 - 3 times on DVD
POTC2 - once at theatre / 2.5 times on DVD
POTC3 - once at theatre / once on DVD
Cutthroat Island - once at theatre / 6 times on DVD
Master and Commander - 4 times on DVD
My kids have watched the POTC movies dozens of times on road trips. The movie theatre on wheels makes stops in Deltonia FL, Romeoville IL, Milwaukee WI, Hattiesburg MS and Concord NC several times a year. Therefore lots of hours on the road for the kids to watch movies.

A movie link on Making Latchet Shoes .
Here are a pair I made. I know. Not authentic, but comfortable. I don't think size 13 shoes were common back then...

Ah yes, great idea. Diosa makes her own chain mail (what doesn't that girl do?) but she won't lend me any of hers. She says she's making me a special outfit out of old beer can pull tabs. She says I'm too old for all that heavy armor...
-- Hurricane
Make it out of PVC tubing. That's what they used in the LOTR movies. Unless you of course you have 1000s of beer tabs saved up. Here's a "how to" link

Nice. Have you shot a hole in any of your hats for that "just missed" look, yet?

Thought I would share a recent project I made for a leatherwork entry at the local county fair.
And yes it took first place.
