  1. The mind boggles... if'n one sorta missed the reference to the jeep.... On a more serious note... wish I could afford to go to Fla... it sounds like a great time will be had.
  2. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! from another veteran...
  3. Many happy returns, laddys.... Twice the fun!!
  4. Arrrrrr, looks like a fine time was had by alll.
  5. I've been poking about, and found this book recently (it is a Dover reprint of an 1808 sailing manual...) called "The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor or a Key to the Leading of Rigging and to Practical Seamanship" by Darcy Lever - I now know how much I don't know about sailing/terminology... but it has lots of drawings and 'explanations' - which would probably mean more to me if I had a ship to explore and see the stuff for real... besides all the bits & bobs being drawn and explained, there is a dictionary of sea terms in the back. As with most Dover books, it isn't all that expensive I b'lieve it were less than $12 at Amazon , the ISBN is 0-486-40220-7 - o' course, they also have (in their zshops) an actual 1808 version for a mere $1000. Hope this be of assistance. :)
  6. Per'aps ye'll accept belated 'appy Birthd'y wishes... A fine birthday it sounds like ye had...
  7. After skimming (I'll read the darn thing as soon as I get a good nautical dictionary) "The Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor or A Key to The Leading of Rigging and to Practical Seamanship" I've come to the conclusion that being a sailor on a tall ship has to be a life's work, and that sea captains must be underpaid. Can you get a Ph.D. in Captain? I am still in shock that a tall ship can go on its' beam ends... <shudder> Guess I'm more naive about sailing than I thought I was. My hat's off to ye' Royaliste, and, if I ever get south to SF, I'll buy ye a drink.
  8. Go by yerself! If yer have to wait on yer friends, ye'll ne'er get where yer goin'!! :) (Somedays it is MUCH easier to go by oneself...)
  9. Have ye re-read "Treasure Island" lately? I've been trying to find time to re-watch the Charllton Heston version of Treasure Island (it's available on video) - the first part was great, but haven't been able to finish it (seem to be spending time posting on the board...) I don't recall if Swashbuckler or The Crimson Pirate have a lot of the lingo... You can always go investigate POTC again... may not help with the lingo, but the mindset is good. :) Good luck :)
  10. I believe "On The Account" is more accurate (especially to an accountant who thinks 'on account' is a charge...) as that is how I've seen it repeatedly written...
  11. Hat making isn't my strong suit (never having tried...) but it seems to me that you could make a tricorn hat out of a circle of felt (glue/pin the edges up?) Just a thought, maybe a bit of experimentation is indicated (maybe tack it to a beanie hat that fits, and then fold the edges up and then either pin or glue or velcro? ) Hmmm. Just a humble thought...
  12. Arrrrrrr! You mean an actor I like in a movie I've watched may get an award??? (where's the emoticon for falling down, thunk!??)
  13. Glad I am that fellow Oregonians thought up such a fine day... :)
  14. Fine work, Redd! But... aren't ye a wee bit underpriced? Only $100!??? If I ever get an outfit together and a photo, we'll be talkin' :)
  15. Hang yerself from a tree? Egad! Reminds me of the good ole days with the homemade coffin on the front porch... strangely enough no one would come to the door!! (Er, mayhap we were a bit overenthusiasitic with the reality?)
  16. I'd hang the original over my desk in a heart beat... unfortunately the clients could see it, and I'd get ummm, spoken to. (The boss has a way...) The cannon sign is perfect. (o' course, you could put a 'hands off' sign under it for the more moronic... but they wouldn't understand that, either...) Great signs tho! And, of course you get it, Mad Maudlin! You're a pyrate!!
  17. If that haul doesn't make the wee laddy feel better, nothin' will!! A fine haul indeed!
  18. I'd love to learn to sail - but they don't call where I live the 'high desert' for nada... I keep eyeing that little Privateer ship on the merchants page at NQG... there is one largish lake (reservoir) where it always seems to be windy - I don't know if it would work though. Hmmm.
  19. Remember most sailors are a deft hand with a needle - gotta be with all that canvas overhead... I've heard a way to make a double sided flag is to make whatever it is you want to show on your flag, i.e. skull & crossbones (or what have you) - then, cut a hole in the banner/flag that matches your design but make the hole a bit smaller. Then, stitch the design to the hole (*sigh* it's late, kinda hard to describe...) any how, you end up with the design visible from both sides, not an applique per se', just a patchwork I guess. (or, like the muppets, you could knit a jolly roger... or, not..)
  20. I just found this thread - is it too late to add my best wishes? I'm in Oregon, too (about 3 hours South-East of the other Oregonians who posted... ) and would have contributed to the plunder if I'd have seen this thread earlier...??
  21. You need an expert to answer that one... I'm pretty sure there's a fix (because my mom has done it for me (a wwwwwwhhhhilllllle ago) ) but I think it has to do with how they are made in the first place. Hopefully Lucky Penny'll see your post and rescue ye...
  22. I'm sure there's a trick to cleaning a coin but leaving the patina alone... I just don't really know - the only metal artifacts I had much to do with were mule shoes, and square nails... (why they didn't leave us interesting things to find... ) I didn't take the museology courses, only the archaeology ones... (of course, now, the museology courses would have done me more good!)
  23. The patina is a sign of age on an artifact - it can add greatly to the value of an item, help authenticate it's age... It is valuable, and important not to destroy if you want to keep the value. The mirriam webster dictionary has these definitions: a : a usually green film formed naturally on copper and bronze by long exposure or artificially (as by acids) and often valued aesthetically for its color b : a surface appearance of something grown beautiful especially with age or use 2 : an appearance or aura that is derived from association, habit, or established character 3 : a superficial covering or exterior I disagree with the 'usually green film' - part, as obsidian (projectile points, etc) can have a patina, but they sure don't usually turn green! Nor does desert rock... but it does apply to coins of copper/bronze extraction. One of the artifacts at the museum I worked at was sent out for 'a polish' and came back stripped - talk about bright shiney new looking copper... much gnashing of teeth was heard (and wailing...)
