  1. thank ye all! i knew what it was, but didnt know the methods to be used. just the thought of a plastic-tie on my cutlass turns the rum in me gut! so, i am going with the leather cord and square-knot method. i truly wish i knew the "mad jack quick-release" knot! we pyrates should have these specialties shared among each us. at a faire we would know who we are at a glance [he must be one of us quick-release pyrates, i'll go introduce meself!]. again, thank you all for all the guidence. this is no doubt the best pyrate site due to who ye are and what ye make it!
  2. refering to a comment from capt. bo back in the beginning of this thread... about the hammocks. in 1974 i visited puerto rico, i was 17 and just graduated high school in NYC. i was there to learn more about family history, etc. i am a half-breed and i wasnt met by all with friendliness. my family there is like a tribe. because of my martial arts background, an uncle took an interest in me and started sharing much history. he was the machete-fighting champion of my family's town in his younger day (1930's). he took me on a friend's tour/fishing boat. there were hammocks underneath where some of the crew slept during the week that they worked. their tools, knives and some fishing gear was kept in their hammocks. during the day they were not taken down, they were pulled up towards the ceiling. every man knew his hammock and belongings. these men lived like pyrates and this has always been what i invisioned as where our ancestors may have kept their weaponry. i know i have no proof as to where pyrates kept anything, but this just seemed like a good place for their things, it was their only true private space on the ship. ...now if i ever figure out a way to travel back in time and speak to my great great grand uncle, juan de Dios sierra, actual pyrate of our family, i'll ask him!
  3. ahoy mates and lass'.... your truly, "dread", will be visitin' me mom and sis in south carolina. westminster to be exact (near anderson, greenville, richland and who knows what other land-locked, God-forsakin' place...). will be there from september 1st thru the 6th, 2006. is there any pyratical place within 50 - 100 miles i can visit for fun, history or just to get away from the family? sumbuddy let me know, please! thanx!
  4. ok... dread has a question. as i get my pyrate garb together, do research and just go plain pyratical i looked up some ren-faires to learn more about them as well... most have weapon regulations. when it comes to cutlass, sabres, swords and the like i read: must be "peace-tied". so, is there a certain way that this is done? is a certain knot expected to be used? any info on this will be greatly appreciated. translation: lookin' to educate meself on this peace-tyin' thing, wouldnt want to visit a town and not be law-biding... right?

  11. damsel, that was a cool story. brought a bloody tear to me eye! i like the "indulge in each other's weirdness" comment. yes klingon and pyratese are a bit different, but you could never have enuf languages! aye, pass me the rum please!

  14. hello mateys! i am hoping to make this years PIP... and yes, i have many questions. i've attended many a ren-faire as a spectator. this year i hope to be in full pyrate force. i dont even know where to get started. i am now putting my garb together, with weapons etc (cutlass, flintlocks that dont fire, a dagger, a stick). my character has a strong story line, i've written the story. i am a lone pyrate, so chances are i will travel alone to the keys. i will be looking into hotels, if i dont do the camp (i need guidence on this one as well and yes i've gone camping before). so, any suggestions up front? i am very excited about all this... and yes, its my cutlass, i am not that happy to see you, arhhh!
  15. awesome collection mate! i favor the second cutlass from the bottom... i am trying to find a short cutlass like it that can be sharpened, all the ones found are repros with alloy blades, see below: http://www.aurorahistoryboutique.com/ahb.cfm?a=C000189 i've searched for a maker, but no luck! my weapons are mostly asian. now a cutlass and some flintlocks will be added to form my pyratical aresenal! again, thanks for sharing, i am humbled by your collection... dread

  19. "We be pyrates, thieving pyrates. And we steal to meet out needs, 'cause we'll never work... It's too much work! So we live a life, pure and free!" ...i like this one a lot! the next one is on me!
  20. "...it matters not if yer famous or infamous, as long as yer on their minds..." from my great-grand uncle: Juan De Dios Sierra, hunted pyrate of the caribbean (porto rico), year of our lord: 1800
  21. ...sitting on the rocks, from afar he eyes them. this is the lonewolf of pyracy... this is the kidd dread. battle scarred from within. he smells her parfume, a gentile scent in the breeze. he almost recognizes it... he remembers the feeling of having someone at his side... thanks to them on the beach, good memories they come. he sits in the shadows. no one will ruin their lovely night... for even davie jones knows of dread.
  22. arh!!! lots of luck to the marrying couple! may his heart stay soft and his cutlass hard! someday i will meet that lass of mine, but she will have to plunder me heart, because i aint given it easy. a broken heart hurts more than many a cutlass cut! still single, for now!
