Thank you, I wish I could say I had tons more, but.... sigh... and some just aren't going to scan and show up here well enough to go through all that bother... but again... these aren't sailors' slops clothing...
-
Pretty much, that's why you only cut open what you need, just embroider more beyond... remember some buttonholes were laced as well... although one would think not too many common seamen had laced buttonholes... Did you try Foxe's site with the mariners pictures? circa 1720 Bernard Picart
-
just a few to show different buttonhole styles on original garments... detail elongated false buttonholes for cuff of 1720s coat regular buttonholes waistcoat 1705 The pattern I am seeing, which isn't saying much due to the sources (paintings, sketches, etc.) aren't very clear and tis hard to tell exactly if the buttonholes are indeed much larger than the buttons, is that late 17th century, the buttonholes fit the buttons usually... by the turn of the century progressing into the later end of the GAoP, there can be the elongated buttonholes...BUT again, this shows maybe what a captain, merchant, civie might wear not what your common sailor/seaman might have... from the few pictures I have of the Town Criers of London, I am seeing very little to confirm either way on the poorer class figures... but again, these aren't sailors...

^ only if called for < hmm does one consider all these clothes art as well? snigger V are gas prices putting a damper on your event attendance?
-
Hard to say from the painting but I have done over 1000 hand made buttonholes and the heavier the fabric does not constitute the longer the buttonhole... maybe an extra 1/8 to 1/4" but no more than that to accomodate for the thickness of wool etc. Just a thought
-
Yes they could be extra long for decoration BUT cut to fit the button.... like this example (circa 1750-1760s). and here's an example of false buttonholes circa 1680s From Historical Fashion in Detail, The 17th and 18th Centuries, by Avril Hart & Susan North... a must book for all you sewers that want to get it right...

By the time prison’s entrance was breached, Sterling had all but given in. As Pinon continued to remain behind and out of sight, he could only pray that his words regarding the annulment had reached both brother and sister’s ears. As he was hurried through the prison gate, he thought of the papers he had burned, hoping to make the most of his marriage, and yet now he had labeled his wife a worthless whore in the hopes that there would be sufficient hurt on her part to prompt her to leave him alone to his fate and remove herself to some place safe. As he was moved inside prison’s walls, the stench hit him first. The smell of human waste and unwashed bodies took his breath away. Mind raced with memories of the Matamores, vile underground dungeons, where he, along with other white slaves, had been held. He tried not to think of foul, cramped conditions and extremely claustrophobic spaces. Keeper approached and red coats’ shackles and leg irons were removed. In Algiers, a large iron ring, weighing at least one and half pounds and attached to a long chain, had been riveted to one of his ankles. Now, as prison’s own brand of irons were locked in place upon extremities, Sterling began to struggle. Although he had survived once, he found he could not face such conditions again. Bribe was quickly offered to remove shackles. Brown coat bartered and as irons were about to be removed once more in order to complete the transaction, Nimrod Pinon arrived. With nothing but a shake of dark head, barter was cancelled.

^ When it comes to converting folks to pyracy, well I've corrupted many a fine youth in my day... sh*te that sounds bloody awful!! < My oldest is even worse than I am when it comes to pirates... and to think FBH had to drag her off the POC ride at Disney World, kicking and screaming because she was too afraid to get in the boat! I staid and went on with the youngest V How many times have you been on the POC ride down at either Disney World or Disneyland?

^ hmmm don't know what you would call me...Walt Disney? < I love to bring a group of talented, intelligent people together and watch them click. I usally stand in the back and watch them have a good time and listen to all the great conversations and gently prod when necessary to keep them heading in a certain direction. I would rather listen than talk about myself, most people have no clue who I am or what I have already accomplished and I rather like it that way. I think I enjoy chosing the folks best, as they each have something grand to contribute... it is amazing how some can brainstorm. V What quality do you look for first in a person?

I do believe Cheeky was referring to me, regarding the "Pet" question... I be the Captain with the one bad eye, and then again, hopefully she was referring to the sock monkey that looks like me! ^ Summer job, other than real work, I never had one... too busy showing horses most of my life. < Yes tis the weekend! Time to sew!!! Huzzah!! (okay I have seriously lost my mind!) V First thing you do Friday after work?

"So, what's the bother here, gents. Can't keep a man in irons under control between the lot of ya? Is this the King's finest? If it is, 'tis a mortifing pity, to be sure." Sterling, crown still pinned to pavement, groaned as more weight was applied in order to alter present behaviour. “I know them now,” he heard Pinon say. “The woman is Sterling’s wife. The man her brother. They are here to save him. See that they don’t!” Sterling’s attempt at a diversion was failing rapidly thanks to Devareaux’s bedfellow. “Bloody hell, my wife?!" Sterling tried to speak. “Think I would waste my time staying married to some worthless gypsy?” he managed, his eyes screwing shut as he thought his skull would crack. “And why not?” Pinon asked, the tall man’s eyes still tracking Ransom as the girl bolted for the Blood & Hanger. “You married a common street whore the first time. Trying to lower your standards even further, eh? My word, what would your Father say?” "You or he, I wonder who be the bigger fool!" Sterling scoffed. "Oi, the Blood & Hanger! To me, lads, before the bloody Red Coats take an innocent sailor to the gibbet!" Sterling's heart pounded all the more as he listened to Ransom's shouts for assistance. How dare she take such a chance with Aurore and the child? Sabastian had to take his sister and flee now! From the look on Devareaux's face, earlier, Sterling knew the card he had to play and so he gambled, staking everything and knowing he would lose all. "Tis an easy thing to bed such a one then toss her aside. I have already annuled the marriage!" He spoke as loudly as he dared, in spite of the crushing foot, still holding him fast. And then Ransom stepped aside, throwing the tavern door open wide. Pinon snatched at the officer’s sleeve. “ We have run out of time! You and two others, take him and come with me! The rest will have to stand and fight.” Pinon started off, as largest of the Brits retrieved Sterling from the street surface and began dragging him off. Sterling did not fight them... anything to keep Pinon's attention focused on him and him alone. As group now raced on toward Marshallsea, remaining red coats formed a line, brought muskets to shoulder and took aim at the tide of drunkards filing out from the Blood & Hanger.
