  1. After being introduced to Steampunk this weekend, The Pyrates Way is jumping in with both feet. The Airship Pyrates was an immediate draw to us and I think there's enough material for both Pyrate magazines to cover such a cool, interesting, and unique view of this branch of fandom. Huzzah to PM for taking the lead (did I just type that?)

  2. Autumn 08 Pyrates Way is finally off press and being put together at the moment for a targeted March 1 mailing. Winter Pyrates Way is right behind it for an end of April mailing and Spring prior to then end of June. We have six issues of Pyrates Way for subscribers starting this year and the first special extra issue will be included in the Spring mailing.

If you've an interest in Faire Magazine:

Winter Issue: Goes to press two weeks - new advertisers have come on board and when the "checks" clear, we'll finalize the edits and get the thing to press - expect it in your mail box before mid-April. Spring will follow by the the first day of summer as we try to get caught up.

First Issue Reprint: Ordered and will be printed, bound and delivered to our fulfillment house in 3 weeks. If you've ordered the reprint, you'll have it hot off the presses before the end of March.

We're late on these items because of the economy. We can't pay the printer without the cash from advertisers and advertisers just haven't had the money to invest in advertising.

Remember, we might be late on an issue. . . but we'll never, ever skip an issue. We also have some incredibly big distribution news on the horizon, so stay tuned!

  3. 'tis true. . .we're expanding to six issues starting in 2009's Spring Issue. . . here's what to expect:

  4. Yeah, unfortunately there was a LOT missing in the article we ran. . . apparently there are more sci-fi folk who are into pyrates than I thought. . . to put it lightly. . . from Lost in Space to Star Wars there was so much missing in the way of pyrates in Sci Fi that I'm a bit taken aback.

'tis my fault. . . I should have read the thing better before accepting it.

  5. Oh, aye, Christine. It is twisted. Conditioning generally that we see emergency personel, just keep going with yo'r lives and give them room. Well, even though someone is dead and personel is there, etc... there are a lot of people who just don't give a damn! Yes, sick, twisted, heartless, cruel, and unintelligent.

Goes to show ya... we are not civilized people, but human herds living by 7 Deadly Sins.

Well said. I think the Walmart folks are in the blame as well on this. I know locally in Philly, there was a report that the Walmarts were having some huge discount on a certain flatscreen TV but only kept a few in stock. . .just to get those folks purchasing. . . they all but asked to be mobbed! Then when that brand ran out, people were literally fist fighting over who got the last one.

It's like creating a feeding frenzy for a thousand by bringing only food for two.

  6. He's not a pirate, he's a Puritan. I wonder how they'll dismiss the religious overtones?

    He's a kick-ass Puritan at that.

Why would "they" dismiss the religious overtones? . . . that's the whole point of being Puritan!

  7. I must agree with the most astute Dutchman. In mocking the movie "A League of Their Own," I commented several times, "There's NO CRYING in Pyracy" . . . . only to find myself misty-eyed at the procession, the memorial, and the after-party.

Just to be a part of the event was humbling. Imagine being on the very beach where those dead men may be buried, both pyrate and royal sailor . . . which hasn't been properly memorialized since the last rites were said over their corpses (should that have even happened). 290 years and no one had ever given those folks their rightful due. Each man lived on the course they'd plotted, whether pyrate or sailor. Each man died as they'd sworn to.

We give five pages to the event in the winter pyrates way but you don't need to buy the issue to experience the moment . . . that would bid ill-respect to those souls we honored. I threw together a quick recap to share with Blackbeard's Crew that very evening of the event and you can share in it by going to:

The whole weekend made me proud to be a part of this hobby we call pyrate re-enactment. . . and although rarely dressed for the occasion, my heart was with each member of the crew.

Many thanks to Kevin Duffus for allowing me to be a part of such an event as we all made history this past weekend.

  8. We'd love to be a stickler for the idea of quarterly (i.e. every 3 months) but it never seems to work. . .thus you'll notice the mark of a "season" on the cover. . . gives us a lot of space on either side of the release date. I don't speak for Pirates Magazine. . . just The Pyrates Way, but there are a lot of things that prevent a magazine from availability.

One of the biggest problems with our subscriptions is the post office. Media Mail can take anywhere from two days to SIX MONTHS to arrive. I had to put my foot down on subscriber re-issues because they'd get the re-issue then a few months later their original subscription issue came in the mail. . .and as I pointed out. . .up to SIX MONTH later.

I don't send out replacement issues until after that six month mark because we just can't afford to cover the lateness of the post office of which I have no control of.

All I can suggest is to be patient. . . . it's out of our hands.

  9. If you've not gotten your summer issue. . .please give me your name and address (email it to: steve@pyratesway.com) and I'll check into it. With the new software, we pay the extra .18 for delivery confirmation, so I can check your account. There've been about 50 folks who didn't get theirs so far and we're updating records and getting them out ASAP.

Hopefully all the bugs are worked out now. . . eeeesh.

  10. I was baptized a Lutheran but since then I've never been in a Lutheran church. What makes someone think that their religious heritage means anything when they consider a life of crime? (Outside of Black Bart Roberts, of course)

Look at the Jewish Mafia (the purple gang) of prohibition in Detroit. . . I'm not sure Canadian Whiskey was kosher. Neither the "Yiddish Black Hand" of NYC. Hell, even today the Israeli Abergil crime family is head of the ecstasy drug trade in most of America. . . . and I think they all ate bacon at some point.

    LOL

There have been a lot of Jewish pirates. . .which should be no surprise since pirates usually are made up of the down-trodden, the spit-upon, the folks deemed "not worthy" by society (in those days). I've read that a lot of Morocco's Jewish minorities joined up with Barbary pirates as soon as they could get out of the house!

Hey. . . . this might make for a fascinating article. . . . watch out for the Winter Pyrates Way. . .you might just read more about it!
