  1. Bilge,

Let's us know if and how we can lend a hand..

    Sterling,

My biggest concern at this time is decoration. I actually wound up with a much bigger area to DJ in that we'd originally expected, and I would like to ensure our Pirate Lounge somewhat looks the part. I have several of my own decorations I can bring, but if anyone has anything of their own (even fishing nets and burlap cand do wonders), it might come in handy.

Anyone that might be able to help in this regard, please shoot me an email at bilge@bilgemunky.com.

Short of that, we need only one other thing to make Bilgemunky's Pirate Lounge a success, and that would be PIRATES!

    Thanks!

  2. Bilgemunky's Pyrate Lounge

Harrr!!! Yer quite right, Cheeky - although I think we need to make it "Bilgemunky's Pirate Lounge", as the latest scuffles between Pyrate's Way, PyrateCon, and Pyrate Week have me thinkin' that I prefer ta keep my own affairs safely within the "Pirate" spellin'.

We're still hammerin' out a few final details, but we do know that I'll be doing some live broadcasting online, and a whole lot more local DJing for the enjoyment of those in attendance. Winters can get pretty lame in the midwest, so this should be a great opportunity to garb up and hang out some place warm with like-minded pirates!

  3. Thanks for the suggestions, all. I found some emery paper at a local hardware store, along with a metal finishing pad and some rouge cloth. I started with the butt cap to see how it takes the treatment, and so far so good. Obviously the small gouges can't be buffed away, but I was able to smooth out the jags without looking like I took a wire-wheel to the thing. Now to re-age the nice new polish (I prefer my pisols clean but weathered) and see how it looks. If I'm satisfied then I'll repeat the process with the barrel.

Sorry Stynky, but not pix. Honestly I think the knicks would have just turned out to look like indistinguishable shiny specs on film. It was more by touching them that I could tell something needed to be done.

I'll let everyone know how it goes. Thanks again!

    -Bilge

  4. I'm surely not the first this has happened to, but during a recent parade my pistol took a mind to make friendly with the pavement. No real damage done, just a little roughed up on the butt-plate and the barrel - both brass.

Now I don't mind a few blemishes on my pistol, but I would prefer these scratches not look quite so fresh and pavement-like. Any suggestions on what I might best use to buff them out and perhaps soften the sharp edges a bit? I hesitate to use steel wool or anything for fear of making things worse, so I would definitely value the advice of someone more experienced.

    Thanks!

  5. Have you ever considered offering "premium" subscriptions for those that don't want to wait for their six month media mail? NQG does something like this - helps keep the cost low for the masses, but allows the impatient the opportunity to fork out a little extra coin for more punctual delivery.

  6. I have a pair of these brass buckles, and I love them! I can't over-emphasize what a difference it makes to have proper, small buckles instead of those giant things more commonly available - changes the entire look of the shoe from pilgrim to pirate :)

Had I the funds at this time I'd be tempted to take advantage of this discount to stock up for future shoes (or so I could change buckles for special occasions - not that fancy silver buckles would make my shoes any less worn and beaten.) But instead I'll just throw in these few cents to recommend that if anyone is on the fence about getting some of these buckles for themselves - DO IT!!!

  7. I really think a more "pretty-boy" look is needed to pull of an Errol Flynn portraying a Doctor turned pirate kind of role. If they go the pretty-boy route

I think this would be a mistake (not that Hollywood ever makes those.) The best thing they could do is go straight to the book and try to take it fresh - any attempt to recreate Errol Flynn would be dreadfully misguided. The job here is to capture Blood, not Flynn. Personally I think the best move they could make would be a decidedly non-Flynn approach, while still maintaining the scholarly type turned reluctant pirate sort of thing.

I just hope they don't go with Patrick Dempsey (McDreamy from "Grey's Anatomy")

If this happens, just go ahead and kill me.

  8. I'm sure many, many will disagree, but I gotta say - I'm sort of liking the new look of the Pub as it currently stands. I come here for info, not visual clutter. The old design, hell, I had to scroll half way down just to get past all the ads and the masthead. The basic black top with the "P" - I think - looks pretty sharp.

Realistically speaking, I know there will likely be some bells and whistles added to the layout. But I certainly wouldn't complain if a certain level of simplicity was maintained. Just my 2 cents.

  9. Originally I didn't think I'd be able to make it this year, but now it looks pretty positive that I should be there the first weekend - all day the 13th, and at least part of the 14th. Hope to see some of you there!

  10. Final contest was between Christa (the tall blonde) and Ben (the "surfer dude" looking guy.) Each got to choose three team-mates from those that had already been planked for their final treasure hunt.

As I recall, Ben was well ahead of Christa for much of the search, but one of her team-mates, Jay true to form, "cheated" (in quotes because it's debateably whether there is a such thing as cheating in such things) on her behalf and got them all to follow Ben's team, skipping finding the clues themselves. This resulted in a very close final challenge of solving a puzzle to open a treasure chest, in which Ben was victorious by a smidge.

    Hope that helps!

  11. I definitely think this would be the job for a non-action hero type - no Gerard Butlers or such. Blood was a doctor, and a relectant pirate. He was about brains and honor - sort of the Dr. Ryan of the pirate world.

Not that our speculations mean much - Hollywood will do what Hollywood will do. Personally, I think Captain Blood could make for a splendid remake. Now as to whether I have faith in Hollywood to actually do so, that's a different question B)

  12. Reading it now, actually. It's an interesting book - paints Long John as a bit more sinister than I'd envisioned him (I'd always thought him more a manipulator than murderer.)

I do rather like one line in particular from reading last night: "There's always time to kill a spaniard"

  13. I know that Pyrate Leatherworx makes something like that:

    ----------------------

Blackbeard Baldric Based On Legends Of One Of History's Most Infamous Pirates. Similar To One Seen In A TV Documentary. Holds Six Pistols And One Sword. Available In Your Choice Of Color & Buckle; 3" Wide. Specify Left Or Right Handed. Available With Buckle In Back Only. The Baldric And Each Pistol Holster Is Sewn Totally By Hand And Treated With Wax For A Sturdy Finish That Will Last. $150.00

    ---------------------------

Unfortuantely there's something up with their website - all graphics are busted. But this is the page:

    http://pyrate.org/baldrics.html

If that's who you're looking for, just email them - they're pretty responsive generally.

  14. Aye, you're not wrong, LadyBarbossa! But alas, for reasons aplenty it was best for us to stick with only one ship for this year. And that aside, mass pirates is the Pirate Festival's speciality - if we also had mass ships, then what would Maritime Festival be left with?

  15. Wow - I never thought I'd say these words, but "I agree with Satan on this one".

Interesting show, but the guilt is just amazing. In my neighborhood I witness racial inequity daily, and reparations of any kind won't even begin to bridge this gap. And I can comforatably say that as an heir of no slave money whatsoever (my father built himself from nothing - white trash, by today's terms.)

And did I mishear, or did she refer to the cheiftain from Ghana as an "african american"???

  16. It's a bit "on the nose" for my taste. Jolly Rogers can be overdone. I prefer the subtlety of a gutted spanish officer for my bathmat - dries the feet right fine, and doesn't maintain fleas quite so much as shag carpet. My toilet seat was intended for the king of Siam before it saw fit to fall into my posession - molded from solid gold, actually. I'd hoped for forged gold, as I'm a fan of durability - and I'm also uncertain whether all 52 gems are genuine (I worry the emeralds may in fact be calcite), but we all have our crosses to bear. For my shower curtain, I typically don't use one, as the servants are relatively punctual about mopping up whatever oversplash my boisterous washing generates.

  17. what I ha'e not hear on BilgeMunky nay ha'e I found on CD but did manage t' blunder from he's website is a couple o' tunes from one who goes by 'Bonehead'; "If The Bottle Don't Get Me, You Will" 'n "All Good Things Come To An End". Nay to I belie'e t' ha'e heard the Bilge e'er play "The Worst Pirate Song"?? Nor th' song from the' 2007 Pirate Palooza "Pirate Annie's Chest" (not that be a roar'n Good one it be!)

Harrr - Worst Pirate Song and Pirate Annie's Chest have both been featured on Bilgemunky Radio, mate! Bonehead, on the other hand - I'm familiar, but their website never had an email. If you know how to contact them, DO let me know!
