How about a hurdy gurdy? It seems I was mistaken what one was. I always thought a hurdy gurdy was what an organ grinder played whilst his monkey danced about But seriously, the hurdy gurdy has been around long enough to have been used aboard a ship. So far I haven't been able to find a reference to any being used aboard ships, pirate or not, but it's a fine instrument, and similar to a fiddle, so if I had lived back then, I think I might have brought one aboard.

Hmm... I hadn't thought of a Jew Harp on a ship but I suppose they would have had them. The instrument has been around a long long time. It's a shame you don't hear it much anymore. I actually have a Whitlow Harp in D that I learned to play. It's funny because when I show it to kids they ask what it is and I tell them it's a musical instrument. It's funny to watch them try to figure out how it makes noise. They invariably figure out the twanger and pluck it a few times and say "ok, so now what". Then when I start playing it always brings a smile.

Good question! I would think you would probably have seen a little bit of everything that was around at the time. Smaller instruments would have been best. When I read your post I couldn't help but get a mental picture of the Captain of The Filthy Whore from "Cabin Boy" playing his sqeezebox

I've been looking at those as well. In fact, my son likes them so much he's talking about getting two pair, one for each of us Do they look like they could be resoled, perhaps? I know of an old-time boot store near here and the man has done wonders with my boots before. It might be a wise investment to have quality rubber soles put on.

I'm in the market for boots (as always). I have such a large foot it's hard for me to find normal boots, let alone the ones I want. I looked at the site you purchased these from. You should have warned me there were platform shoes there (oww, me eyes lol) Do they seem like they'll last a while? I know they might not stand up to daily use, but I need a good starter pair until I can afford better ones.

If you temper the blade like you described, it should flex more than bend. The amount of temper you get will really depend on the carbon content of the steel. The higher the carbon, the better it will temper. Traditionally, a machete is supposed to be flexible. While they might be softer then sword steel for example, this has a purpose. If your in the bush using your machete and damage it, you want to be able to repair it easily. Machete's are meant to take abuse that you wouldn't want to do to your fine knives or swords. I've been makin' me own rags for a few years now as I have a big head Basically I go to walmart (*shudders) and buy a yard of material. I cut it in half and hem the edges to make a 3 point bandana. All I do is tie it in the back in a square knot with the tail tucked underneath the knot.
