  1. I thank ye me hearties... I am looking forward to the Pittsburgh Ren. Faire. This will be the second time going but the first in which I will dress....In period garb that is. Thank goodness for the internet...Who would ever have guessed that a world existed where we could actually relive our love of of history. DuCouer
  2. Well my aromatic friend...keep me posted...so to speak. Let me know the whens and how to's And thanks for ignoring my Major faux pas TYPO...Really I am not illiterate...I just can't type. DuCouer
  3. Queen Margot was just released the 1st on DVD. Good luck finding it though....A treasure hunt if ever I saw one. I saw a DVD copy of Scaramouche in the store today...Is it worth picking up??? DuCouer
  4. My very first sword was a WWII Non-Com Japanese Katana. I have since aquired 2 other katana (Katana are easier to come by then other swords), a broad sword a Rapier and a Claymore. I do not claim to an expert but I do have some experience with them. I guess my question was this: Why did pirates prefer the cutlass to the rapier? While later versions of the rapier were for thrust only several from the late 1500's to mis 1600's were cut and thrust. Was the Cutlass just a derivitive of the military saber? Any way...I am still searching for a nice blending of both. As a navice swordsman I just find cut and thrust easier to use. DuCouer
  5. Just watched Count of Monte Christo and Brotherhood of the Wolf back to back (What can I say...tis a dull life I lead.). I enjoyed Count of Monte Christo more. While on the search for Pirate movies at Borders, I came across a three movie DVD with Captain Kidd, The Son of Monte Christo and one other. It is only Twelve Bucks so I think I will pick it up. The only recognizable name is Charles Laughten as Captain Kidd. Will let you all know what the movies are like when I am done with them. DuCouer
  6. I know this is a little late but The Batman Pirate Issue was a Detective Comic Annual (7) drawn Buy Alcatena...Very Dark and Very Well Done....Cat Woman as A Pirate queen and The Joker a maniacal (of Course) marauder...Brilliant. I think it was written by Chuck Dixon. The Flying Fox was his ship and Batman was called Leatherwing....Brillian In the Witchblade comic..Tales of the Witchblade...The characters name was actually Anne Bonny. I wouls also recommend Cross Gen Chronicals featuring George Perez Art...A little Sci-fi but it has a great sea Battle and What else...a sword fight on the beach... DuCouer
  7. Funny how nobody has mentioned Roman Polanski's Pirates...is it that bad??? I have not seen it in years...to be honest and do not remember a whole lot about it but Walter Mathau as a Pirate? Brilliant. One Comment on Cut Throat Island...Yes it was historically in accurate, Yet it was a rehased story line, but Hey it Was a Pirate movie.... Frank Langella was a great villian...and actually the Duagge Cutlass he used was actually accurate for the times....As for his Hair cut...well maybe he kept it shorter so that he could wear a wig when in Port...Just a Thought. So Black swan is a must see huh?? Any others I should see??? DuCouer
  8. RedHand...Is Queen Margot on DVD Yet? I would love to see it but have never been able to rent it. Also...Why haven't the released Roman Polanski's Pirates on DVD. He just won the Academy award, Walter Mathau is, regrettably, no longer around and with the rise of period films this would be an ideal time. I haven't seen that movie in years...Does anyone remember the fencing in it? Went looking the other day for some of the movies mentioned here...namely Scaramouche and Les Vilins de Vampire...any idea whee these films may be had???
  9. The Count of Monte Christo...Every time I watch that movie I enjoy it more and more. I would love to find a sword like the one Edmund uses in the final scene. I just wish the scene was longer...it is just that good. Has anyone seen the Duelist by Ridley Scott? I do recomend this movie. While not a pirate movie per se, it does take place during the napoleonic era. There is one scene where they are fighting with sabers that enters in the middle of the fight...both men are a bloddy mess and exhausted. Great Scene. Richard Lesters Three Musketters still has some of the best swordplay in it. Did Anyone see Johnny Depp on Leterman last week...They showed a fencing clip with Depp and Orlando Bloom....It looked very cool...very well done and Choreographed. Counting the Days to POTC DuCouer
  10. Ahoy all...Anyone from the Greater Pittsburgh area that knows of or would like to start a Renaisance or Pirate society here in the 'Burgh. Sure we have the SCA but they are way to up tight and cloistered. You must have to sell your soul to join them. I have written for information several times and have been ignored. I want an open minded group of people who want to share in the spirit of the times. Post here with ideas or contact me by e-mail look Forward to hearing from all of you... DuCouer

  12. I have just checked out Loyalist arms....What a cool site and great prices. I was wondering though...why are most military or pirate swords single edged? I am thinging of purchasing the english saber. It is beautiful with the hand guard, straight blade and it is dual edged. Ducouer
  13. Ahoy all..new member here as well...Raiding the the Three Rivers of Fort Pitt I am (uh....Pittsburgh, PA...just in case). Any of of you scurvey dogs from this area??
  14. I just had to chime in on the Muskteers debate. In Richard Lesters the Four Muskeeters there is a great scene where they are having breakfast on top of a bastion while besieged by protestants....It is hilarious and they do do use muskets and pistols with great accuracy. Has anyone seen the latest Bond film? Ok...not a "genre" film, but there is an awesome fencing scene that uses just about every type of blade imaginable. It starts with foils then Rapiers, the bad guy even picks up a Katana, and then ends with them using Rovenna's (a type of long sword used in the early rennaisance). It was choreographed by good old Bob Anderson. Ridley Scott's "The Duelist's" is now available on a special edition DVD...It has a great conversation between Scott and the Director of the Count of Monte Christo Kenin Reynolds. Every Sword enthusiast should check it out. I really like the Duels in Rob Roy (William Hobbs again). Just brutal and Tim Roth is just so damn Wicked. The Musketeer is OK, Tim Roth is the Best Part of that film (He has almost surpassed Alan Rickman as my Favorite villian[Rickman's Sherrif of Nottingham is just Brilliant]). Other movies of note Gladiator, Ladyhawke, Dragon Heart. I have some problem with the older movies in that they seem not in real time. Don't get me Wrong...I love Errol Flynn, but the movies are a bit tough to watch todat....maybe I have just become jaded.... DuCouer
  15. Ahoy all...New to the Pub and a rousing hello to all. I would love to comment on this Topic. As a movie buff I have collected most of the movies mentioned here...a few comments if I may. Richard Lesters The Three (and four)Muskeeters Do contain some of the best swordplay ever on film. The Fights, Choreographed by William Hobbs actually, are superb. Christopher Lee VsMichael York in both films are just savage. William Hobbs also did the Fight scences in Ridley Scotts Duelist, and the New Count of Monte Christo. I will have to double check...but I think he did Cutthroat Island. Bob Anderson is slated as choreographing The First Star Wars, Mask of Zorro (with Antonio Banderas), and All of the lord of the Rings Films. Anderson was also a protege of Errol Flynn. So..Who is looking forward to Pirates of the Carribean w/ Johnney Depp...I am....The fencing looks fantastic.
