If you ask me, thats what piracy is all about... whores and liquor!
So was sailors life during GAoP or in later time like seen in this But enter there at your own risk ...
Swashbuckler - Thank you.
(One knows one's turning into a pirate nerd/anorak when a link to period erotic art is opened with the anticipation of seeing a set of well drawn woman's stays.)
William - Kudos to the chef on the flag work! Lucky we are to have companions with talents we can tap into.

"Captain Stern" from Heavy Metal (1981) was the first thing to come to mind. But we'll go with ...

This black coat material, though heavy and not good to make a flag out of, would look very intimadating with a skull, crossed bleading hearts, a hour glass with wings, and a 200ft tall Japanese Reptile breathing nuclear radiation out of his mouth...
:::Someone's been talking.::::
Gentleman - Thank you for your input. (And until we hear from Foxe, we'll go ahead and modify the screenplay to exclude the nun's habits being used for the flag and the sequence where she's tied to the bowsprit.)
William - That flag RAWKS

A couple weeks ago we viewed (again) the last episode of Father Ted, a dark BBC comedy from the mid-late 90's about three Irish priests stuck on an isolated island together after an assortment of transgressions against the Catholic Church.
In the final episode of the series, (Going to America - Season 3, episode 8) Father Dougle attempts to confirm with Father Ted that he isn't going to be left behind when Ted leaves for America. Ted prepares to respond when he sees his old com-padre looking back at him with archetypal puppy dog eyes.

odd usually I don't find biology very interesting but if it is even a little bit pirate related then yes...
Indeed. Sometimes I study biology in the evening with Mrs.Lubbers and it's always exhausting.
Thanks for links!

Have not done business here but the product looks interesting for a late impression.

Was thinking of converting a cheap modern mfg reading set to appear like older pair. I suppose these could be converted as well. (To replicate 17th century round frames sans the arms.) We'll post pics if that comes to fruition.

Still got the flags if anyone wants to pick up the dream where I left off.....
Yeaaaaaaah. One can never have enough unfinished projects lying around.
With regards to black fabric. One might ask, would acquiring black fabrics during the coarse of doing business with Spanish vessels and residing in a region where Spain had a strong influence be much of an issue? Consider Spain's propensity for conservative fashion, the need for mourning dress, the presence of darkly robed Catholic emissaries and their commute over the seas for decades. While I don't recall reading/seeing anything about the disposition of clothing being used for anything other than garments during the period, would this lend itself as a possible source for material with which to stitch black flags?

While reading up on black fabric dyes, I found this other article re: the logwood adventure.

(Published in 2006, Our Debt to the Logwood Tree: The History of Hematoxylin by Cristina Smith. it includes the previous article Logwood and Brazilwood as a reference.)

Here's a nifty illustration of a period marketplace in Alsace featuring all manner of goods. This image is from Schönes Zinn and can also be found reproduced in PEWTER at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The artist is reportedly unknown. (Note predatory parrot on center canopy waiting to wreak havoc on its next unsuspecting victim.)

Here is a great resource for buckles ..not sure if they sell them anymore however the info is priceless
Good link Mister O.
According to the thread below we'll be stalking Mister Bagley for said buckles unless some used ones turn up... or another source puts some together. (We'll probably be using some sort of modified, center-bar harness hardware until we can upgrade.)

Here some late 17th century dutch port view...
Clik it to make it bigger and see all those juicy details including but not limited to: port stuff, Thrum caps, vessels...

It took me a minute before I figured out what you were going on about, but now I see the various images we've posted that had a specific background color. . . that we don't, um ah, use anymore.
It is rather frustrating Stynky. I mean, the only real reason we initially signed on to the forum was to use it as medium to demonstrate our work in interior design. That, and perhaps garner a few recipes for cooking with bacon. I'm simply at a loss for words to describe the disappointment that our family has to deal with now. It's literally shaken us to the core.

We'll re-adjust imagery using transparent backgrounds to accomodate any future makeovers.
(Probably should have set sail with these initially but hey, we're learning as we go.)

Oh come on, they haven't really changed. . . not really - they've just been shuffled around a bit.

Grymm - Glad to see someone out there is making an attempt at accurate, period glasses. Although the prices are making me Scottish nose hairs curl.
