Can't speak for the breeches, but the short jacket we acquired from Liam's CC&C is the proverbial "cat's meow."

It is interesting. Thanks for putting that list together. ...
Ditto that!
Killer Shrews! Link to interesting info on a cousin of the Hispaniolan solenodon. This predatory shrew in Cuba has venom in its teeth. (Which was thought to be extinct but is still around.)

We're interested.
(Good timing too. We were just about to let loose our pet rocks back into the wild.)

Are all those creatures extinct via consumption by humans?

some events will not even allow ANY weapon at all !! here again, rules of the insurance underwriter... zip ties and sometimes a stout leather thong ...
There was some dialog about "thongs" when I came on board...
Actually, this thong business doesn't bother us so much as the whole "Brazilian wax" thing.
Ahhh, Landlubber... now you've touched on the Brazilian wax. Ai, Caramba wax found deep in the Amazon rain forest is an alternate peace-tie. When applied between sword blade and scabbard it forms a bond resembling epoxy, hence the Portuguese name Ai, Caramba which comes from the expression/oath "Ai, Caramba!" used when trying to remove ones sword, dagger or pistol after application. Brazilian wax is not recommended for pirates

Thanks Jas. I'll forward to the missus. (And the header shall read "Off the Hook".)

unopened can of snuff from a UK company that has been making it for 300+ years...
Does that have a "best if used before" date on it?

Bookfinder is your friend when it comes to odd books like that one. (Hope you can read French.)
Thanks for link.
Re: French... we'll wing it. Hey, we can always test results on the neighbors eh?

In The Sea Rover's Practice by B. Little there's mention of La Cuisine des Flibustiers... a 300+ page book on French pirate recipes. Has anyone ever seen or acquired this? We were considering scooping up a copy.

And, for those interested in pewter tankards, flagons, and such; there is this: http://www.pewtertan...p?p=1_7_British
well, onward with my search.
I really like that site. On the links page, there's a connection to a European pewter one...
http://www.zinnmeist.../historisch.htm
Even if one can't follow all the (German) text, it's worth a visit just to view the photos, artwork and regional maps with illustrations of assorted European and British shapes and styles of drink ware that were produced through the ages. The latter came from the book Schönes Zinn by Ludwig Mory. After eyeballing these things for the better part of a year, I ventured to eBay's German site a week ago and purchased a copy. I'll be happy to share any relevant info from same once I get my mitts on it.

You can get the zip ties in just about any color that you want, so if you prefer a black, brown or red, you can buy a color that won't stand out at as much and satisfy the most safety conscious organizer.
Yeah, those day-glow fluorescent hues will certainly clash... unless of course you're outfitted that way.

Its fantasy... all fantasy. No matter how Historically "correct" we try to be, we are pretending to be something that we are not. ...
Drop the subterfuge Mister Fortune.
Everyone's already aware of your decades-old Caribbean connections. ...

What a wonderful reference. Thank you.
You're welcome.
(I'm saving a copy of the graphic for future reference too.)

Welcome aboard, you should be able to find all the refferences you and your family need for developing a look. I started a topic to ask opinions on what type of hat I should get for a 16660s onward persona, and got an excelent group of responses. There's also already a garb standards topic for period reinacters.
they can be found here https://pyracy.com/in...l=&fromsearch=1 and here https://pyracy.com/in...l=&fromsearch=1
Thank you Commodore. And thank you for the links. We shall "endeavor to persevere."

Mr.Cross - Indeed, it always seems like a sharper trowel is needed to dig up the 17th century stuff.

The Pewter Society in the UK is currently running with a sort of pie-shaped imagery that covers 15th-19th century British plate styles. I can't vouch for its accuracy, but I wouldn't think they'd intentionally post misinformation. (Take it with a grain of salt.)

as long as people don't post pictures of them in their throngs
And in unwashed throngs at that.
Welcome aboard, Eric and the LandlubbersAnonymous.

Thanks very much.
(I'll make sure this gets passed along to our washer woman.)
Incidentally, we're still in the early stages of getting our kit together and I anticipate an uphill battle with the whole garb business. For example, I found what I thought was a nice period throng at the local thrift store a couple weeks ago but when I got it home, the missus seemed appalled by the bloody thing. Why are women so fickle?

Greetings and solicitations,
We've been lurking around the site for about a year and thought we'd take the plunge and sign on. We really enjoy reading some of the anecdotes here and the idea of sharing related information with kindred spirits seems worthwhile. Kudos to the site's hosts and you veterans out there who've taken the time and energy to help enlighten the rest of us, (the unwashed masses) on GAOP reenacting and related topics.
Briefly, a bit about ourselves. We're a small family residing in southern California. Our interests are eclectic and the adults of the household thought it would be beneficial if the spawn got some 3-D exposure to life in other time periods outside of our immediate one. Consequently, we've contacted like-minded personalities/groups in the local area for diversion and education.

In some demented circles, I believe this is referred to as the "money shot."
Good luck with this project!
