it's not guns or poor planning that causes these incidents to occur ...they are random acts of violence performed by disturbed individuals .... there can't ever be planned responses to every event as the one that happened before each circumstance is unique ....yes i do agree that waiting for your execution is a senseless way to die when it is being committed by a lone gunman ...but it takes a hell of a lot of balls to allow yourself to die in an attempt to take down the shooter ....and unless we forget that if a pschopath needs a feeling of power by upping his kill ratio ...he need only look to the work of terry nichols and timothy mcvey in oklahoma city in 1995 ...168 people killed in an instant and no gun was involved or what about the suicide bombers in the middle east ..if they are committed to self destruction and the desire to inflict upon others pain suffering or death it's hard to pin point the individaul who will wake up on monday morn and stap explosives to their body and walk into a market or mall and blast thier ass to kingdom come it has more to do with people ignoring people they know or love to go on unhindered with emotional or mental problems we don't seem to care about those in our midsts that are disturbed ...we don't feel it's our place to stop and lend a hand "the governemt will take care of the problem" the government used to take of the problem a bit more effectively but the cost was more than taxpayers wanted to bear for state mental hospitals so many of those institutions have closed across the country and the groups who claim that holding seriously mental distrubed individuals was cruel and unusual punishment for those folks because they have their rights as well i listened to so called jouranlist pundits question about evacutation plans or stategies if a pchopath wanted to kill masses of people in a setting like that and he was from within the community of the university i'd go from the first act of violence to the site of the evacuation point and continue my rampage there ....in that scenario it's shooting fish in a barrel do we as a society want an armed gaurd with us in every public building or business is so we need to come up with the funding to provide that level of security ...or submit every individual to intensive mental screening on a regular basis to identify who might be the next to snap there is no quick fix or miracle cure for the senseless violence in this counrty or other places in the world ..it could only occur with more attention to our fellow human beings and their needs for individaul attention to their specific mental and emotional needs so until the world figures out how to defuse the anger and hostility we have in our midsts we will have events such as Va Tech or iraq or dafur or god forbid auswitz or buchenwald

Fort Zachary Taylor update for PIP 2007
callenish gunner replied to William Brand's topic in Fort Taylor
we camped in the trees above the west beach (from the building center and left) several hundred yards from there to the point this shot shows some of the coral that was laying around on the ground yeah i know the tent was selling boots but that year i was working renfaires and my boss wanted me to be in key west ....won't be making that mistake again!!! -
the one thing that we found camping in that area before was the fact that were lots of sizeable pices od coral laying upon the ground ....so i will be bringing a rake with me to at least clear out under the tent and try to keep our walkways cleared to keep the attendees from twisting an ankle....i'm sure that piliing the excess coral around the roots of the trees while we're there would make the camp more appealing to the crowds
-
yes.....better to keep it to the authentic side of the sea ....you can always take it to the hollywood side if you so choose ...but good slops and simple shirt waistcost(wescoat/vest) and a decent hat and period shoes ....for a couple hundred bucs you get an outfit that fits into any crowd of scallywags ....then we'll talk about PERIOD WEAPONS!!! good hunting lad!!

figured i post a shot of a friend who uses his 12x12 tarp for french and indian war encampments ...his is dark canvas but other than that it would fit into our encampment perfectly he was sleeping 2 under it for a five day encampment and 2 of those days we had heavy rains

for many years i traveled in the canadian & alaskan back woods and lakes with a 12'X12' canvas tarp it weighed about 12-15 lbs. but i also was able to set it up various ways depending on the weather terrain etc. ....setting it up in the diamond shape you'd expressed is fairly easy and it only uses minimal rope lengths ...with the further most down corner to the prevailing winds it's very aerodynamic and it will shelter you and 1 or two others and your gear even in tropical downpours i usually would use a small make-shift pole in the middle just to keep the center from drooping too low.with another configuration you can also set it up as a long A frame style to shelter more folks/gear ....that size would also have been about the size of some smaller sails ....the smaller size canvas is almost survivalist measurements also folded and rolled/ tied up properly it can also be a very versitile way of packing your entire kit to about the size of a medium sized duffle bag a 12'x15' canvas painter's drop cloth can be obtained from lowes or other home supply centers for under $35 (if you trim it to square you can use the excess for reinforcements in the corners) doing some hand work like puting rope in an outer hem and handmade grommets in the corners and on at least two edges will give it a great period appearance. then make sure you pre-wash it and then add some sort of waterproofing either commercial or there are homemade recipes for a good mixture ...even coated these tarps shouldn't weigh more than 10 pounds ...and perhaps one more thing you might want to learn would be splicing your ropes ...eye splices and end splices

Fort Zachary Taylor update for PIP 2007
callenish gunner replied to William Brand's topic in Fort Taylor
on this i have to totally agree with hurricane the area over to the south of the fort is wonderful and it does have a much more period feel to what we have in mind with the encampments etc. will the pub be outside with us or will that area still be inside the fort under those trees is actually pretty cool compared to the open ground inside the fort
