Teasing us. This is why we hate you. Hey, is there a way to fix the photo autoscaling? It's not working for me anymore and the large photos are bursting the borders. I was going to post a bunch of junk in the PiP forum, but the photos were so fricken huge in the preview that I just gave up on it. I went through the settings, but I couldn't see anything wrong according to the info I found about the IP boards. Heard anything? Will the update fix this? (Did the last one break it?) Inquiring minds want to know.

Hey, I didn't say anything! (Yet.)

Odd, I was just thinking the other day after blathering on on Jessi's FB page that if it were not for philosophers and religion, we might not have any of the modern success principles.

Our own Mercury Capta...*cough* er, Quartermaster. It was splendid to see you at PiP! An absolutely terrific surprise! Have a wonderful birthday, good friend.

I just imported this stuff into Word for editing...27 pages, plus a few more for post commentary that I want to use. I promised myself I was going to write less because I was only going to be there for 3 days. Last year when I imported the Journal into Word, it ended up being 23 pages. (Although that is after editing. I usually discard some things because they are funny on the pub, but not in a webpage.) Less writing...yeah. (27 pages in four days! Why doesn't the book on period pirate medicine go that easily?)

Ah, thanks for correcting me.

It's not a bad book; it's really a fine traditional pirate story (very much like a screenplay as Blackbead suggests). It's just not a great Crichton story. If you like Crichton books you start reading them with a certain expectation. Wait until post-Christmas and you'll probably be able to pick up for cheap on Amazon used. That's how I buy most of my books.

Try this link, going through the front door into the database: http://www.slavevoyages.org/tast/index.faces (Hey Daniel, where ya' been? You should try re-enacting. It's sort of fun. Got any more new pirates for the database? )

In Columbus, Ohio on the Santa Maria replica, which is located downtown. Michael talks about the plans for this edition of the event in this thread, but it's locked. I always go to these events so long as there's no schedule conflict. So I should be there.

I talked to her and vintage sailor about that and I believe she brought it with her from Taiwan. Vintage brought this indescribable knife made out of a piece of metal that her grandfather had made. I thought I got a photo of that, but I can't seem to find it.

[quote name=Mooseworth' date='14 December 2009 - 06:47 PM' timestamp='1260834449' and that's what makes Boo interesting! I don't think you've fully experienced modern PiP if you haven't sat down and had a chat with Boo. He's a fascinating guy. The first time I met him, I was so enthralled I wrote one of my monthly success articles about him.

And muchas smooches back. My dear, methinks you are the one blushing. I'd swear you're overcoming whatever shyness you claim to have. Pretty soon you'll be kissing Cross. :D So, now, you can call me... Mission Raphael Mission Misson Caraccioli (for you old timers) Mission the Surgeon Mission the Mercury Surgeon Mission the Mercurial Surgeon Mission Impossible! Dah dah dahhh dah. Dah dah dahhhh daant. (I may have to blow the pic of me with Robyn up to poster size.) Stupendous Mission Dread Surgeon Mission Mission in Action (aka. 'Out to Lunch with Boo') ...but ya' doesn't have to call me Melvin. (This is an obscure pop reference for the three of you who remember that ad.) Thanks again to all for the well wishes and the odd bits of poetry.

In need of assistance when reading. *Sigh* And I do love reading so. As for the retinopathy, I still get this weird flash when going from dark places to light ones. I'll take that over going blind, though.

Cheers to ya', pirate mentor. (I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for him. When I arrived, ill-dressed for the prevailing weather, traveling suit askew, clothing leaking out of my luggage and took a look around I really had doubts that I was in the right place. But you can't doubt Ed for very long.) Have a pint for me!

Pressed! Pressed, I tell ya'. Don't believe all that evidence Silas and Micky are compiling... Aw shucks. Thanks guys. Stynky, my good friend and waiter, you will notice that in many of the pictures of me I have my mug in hand (including the group shot). Even though you said you left, I was still suspicious. You might have agents like Josh working for you or something... And Duchess, for you, I'm glad to...No, wait, that is just going to sound wrong. I have actually made it a very specific point not to mention my impending bday pre-PiP because, as you all know, I am very shy and retiring and try to avoid any potentially embarrassing situations while there. Goofing aside, thanks again to everyone for the well wishes.

No, but this is the second time it has been recommended. I'll put it on the list. (Is that a Whedon show? I have to confess, I have a thing about Whedon shows that now borders on the irrational. Although it was a series of 4 different Whedon shows that had something I have yet to quantify about them that led to this 'thing'. So I feel self-righteously justified in my estimate as regards my preferences. )

For fans of WB cartoons and old serial westerns, check The Adventures of Brisco County Junior. It stars Bruce Campbell. (Those of you familiar with him already know what you're in for.) Loads and loads of campy humor, absurd pop-culture puns and goofy goings on. Plus they occasionally stick the wonderfully funny John Astin in there for good measure. I got one disc off of Netflix and knew that it was a show made for people like me. Since it only lasted one season, I just went out and bought it. Well worth the price.

Surrender from Tomorrow Never Dies by k.d. lang. Over and over - I stumbled across it again yesterday. Mien Gott, but she has a beautiful voice - it's as good as the best instrument I can think of. I don't even listen to the words...just the intonation. (Why they used that horrific mess by Sheryl Crow as the main theme for the movie is beyond me.)

Is that what got Red Jessi then? I shudder to think what the folks in Blue Heaven though of me bringing her in with what looked like a black eye. (Especially being dressed like a pirate.) Although several still wanted photos, so it must not have been that bad.

You guys have got to be there if it's at all possible.

It's the same every year. We all have a great time at PiP and come home all jazzed to do it again and then...we get three months of winter. *Sigh* And by the end of those three months some of the wondrous warm glow of a great event has been forgotten by most of us (except Brig, who pines for this event all year) getting replaced by wondering what so-and-so really meant by such-and-such and...I'm really going to try not to do that this year. PiP is the best pirate re-enacting event I attend and I'm going to try not to forget it. Nothing against any of the other events, you understand, it's just that PiP is that good. My head still isn't straight. It takes a week or more to come off that high.

You got a good one of Mary and I chatting! Can I use it in the Surgeon's Journal? Pleeeeeease? I'll give you credit. Ha ha! (Although that would have been a really nice shot of Anna without the moose antlers...) Ah, yes...the rigors of piracy.

Mae was eating snakes ? No, no no! There's a dash in there. They were snakes that were going to eat Mae when she decided to trespass in their territory! I tried to get a photo of one of them but it didn't come out. "Lethal! Lethal, these snakes. Born killers!"

I say we take up a collection for QM James, because that is one guy I have really got to meet. Then he, Stynky and I can hang around together enveloped in a bizarre envelope of strange humorous antics that no one else can possibly understand. Including us. (Well, unless Duchess comes - she might be able to act as an interpreter. I can hear her now, in a low, fake-Brit accent: "And now we see the three males approaching a lone, straggling female. The appear to have made a favorable impression...no wait. The female has turned on them, bearing her teeth. They are running away hooting. This is common behavior for the sarchasimus lunatoonicus in the wilds of a re-enacting event.") A collection then! Lesse'... I got a quarter, two nickels, a twopence, a thruppence, a slug that works in some older vending machines, half a button and a piece of string. How's that for a start?

Well, I have bought several of them and gotten others through inter-library loan. But the best way is to get .pdf copies of them so you can view or print them out and read them at your leisure. (It took me six months of serious research to find Woodall and then the flood gates opened.) The databases usually have most (if not all) of the editions of the various books, so you can get access to everything you want. I explain how to get the .pdfs in this post. Oh, and the way I find books is the references in the modern books about period medicine along with this forum. (I've pretty well plundered the forum for all the books it has to offer though...)
