If the Matrix movies were comedies, I'd guess them. But they aren't. (Don't know.)

Cheers! Have a great one! Let's celebrate tomorrow!

I hesitated to put them in a list because of how long the post will become, but it will be easier to look for people that way. #61 is definitely Rats. Grace is actually #41...the numbering of the folks in the middle is a trifle wonky because you can only see some people's faces. Lo siento. I believe #28 is Iron John and I know #30 is Paula - who was with Iron John. I'm going to put them in the list - correct me if I'm wrong. Lesse... 21. Hawkins, 25. Squeak (Who doesn't post here AFAIK), 31. Girl from Key West who shoots on Civil War Cannon Crew (that no one seems to know the name of - and whom I don't think posts here), 38. Mark Gist, 48. Jamaica Rose (I think), 48.5 Capn' Pern (Oops, if that's the guy looking up, I failed to number him! My bad!) 50. Caribbean Pearl, 52. The White Spy, 53. Shay of the Keys. Ok, someone else take a turn at this.

Yes, that's the one. It's always good to see Zooey Deschanel in a quirky role. (Not that she really plays anything in any other kind of role.)
-
I'm the guy with the hat.
-
Curious that the guy is all upset because it only sold at auction for $100K. I'm sure he put some time and money into his research, but not that much. Besides which, he may well have gotten payment for loaning it to all those museums.

What?! Who is it? Oh, bliss! When can I get it? Can we make copies when I see you this weekend?

Stockings... does better than average exist?????
Mission replied to Jas. Hook's topic in Crafting Kit
Thanks, but I actually prefer them this way. I'll just wear my new socks from Greg that seem to have more staying power. I like the colors and texture better anyhow. -
Cross and Patrick are on Stynky's side? (That Bucky - he's really a shell of man.)
-
Not even close. It's much more recent than that.

I'm still traipsing through John Atkin's The Navy Surgeon; Or, Practical System of Surgery. I'm almost done with it, but I'm in no hurry. In fact, I'll probably be shelving Atkins for the nonce because I just received The Memoirs of Pierre Labat 1693-1705 - translated by John Eaden. It came though inter-library loan, so it has a firm due date. (So I have to read it and enter my notes from it into the computer before then. Thus, Atkins must wait.) I'm also reading my Spanish Textbook, Puntos en Breve, which was apparently written by a committee.

Hey, thanks Callenish! Alas, QMJ, I do tuck those socks into my breeches, but they don't stay. As for wearing my socks over my breeches...nah. I personally don't like the way it looks. It's bad enough I have to wear knee pants to be PC, do I have to make them look even sillier by wearing my socks over the top of them? "Pull out your pants pockets. All kids of the future wear their pants inside out." -
For the record, it appears that Patrick be right - there was a virus on the American Greetings site. They must have fixed it before I checked in. (Sorry Patrick.)

This is sort of fun. It's from John Atkins' The Navy Surgeon, although it's not only about surgery. (For those of you weak of constitution, there is nothing remotely challenging in here. It's just some interesting details.) Atkins added a section to his original book called "Physical Observations on the Coast of Guiney." It's about a trip taken with Atkins as the ship surgeon in 1722. First a bit related to surgery that I thought you guys might find interesting: "...I rather impute it ["Dry Gripes, or Colica Pictonum"] to this ["large and partial Sweats"], than to any pernicious Quality in the Air, or of strong Drinks and Acids swallowed, because of any peculiar unwholsomeness in the former, would make the Mischief more general; nor does excessive Drinking, or Acids seem likely, either of Rum or Limes, because these are of universal Use with Seamen, in all Climates, without such Effect." (Atkins, p. 355) Now some other curious details: "First, The Condition of Careening Ships at this Island makes it unsuitable to English Constitutions, for we are put under a Necessity of building Tents, and employing half our men on Shore, for their Security, and for the Work that is wanted at them; whereby they are more at their own Wills and Disposals, than (without such a Necessity) it is proper they should ever be trusted with; being ungovernable in their Actions and Appetities pil- __ -fering from the Negroes, debauching their Wives, and excepting a very few, most irregular in their Way of Living, or their ill Behaviour towards those from whom they receive it, which is apt to stir up Anger and private Revenge; they have no other Weapon against Europeans, and perhaps may think it their Duty when injured. Revenge may be the properest Measure to reclaim an Evil-Doer; and if Men can so govern the Passion as not to exceed Justice, which may be sometimes without Sin to Fourfold or more, he chuses the suitable Method to bring an Offender to the Sense of his Guilt, and prevents himself and Friends from sharing more. Another Cause, is the extraordinary Heat of the Sun, (now in the Zenith, more stifling and troublesome,) which the Men are forced to work in, and for a longer Time every Day, on such Occasions as Cleaning: These Heats nigh, or on the Shore at the Tents, vastly surpass those at Sea, not only on Account of the Earth's stronger Reflection, but also from surrounding Woods and Hills, that stops the Access of the Winds and refreshing Breezes. They are still more offensive, in that the Setting Suns are succeeded with a Chilliness in the Air, filled with aqueous Vapours, which, condensing very fast by the Interruption the Hills give to their Motion, fall by the Evening at the Shore, in cold and prodigious Dews, sufficient in a few Hours to wet all the Beds through a double Tent. [A double tent?] This Alternation and Fatality of Extremes, our Troops at Carthagena, in the West-Indies, have lately experienced; laying three Nights after landing, upon their Arms, without Tents to screen off the Sun by Day, or Dews by Night. Lastly, these alternate Heats and Dews are more hurtful to Seamen, from their Irregularities of Life: Every Day's Labour must be recruited: And this they do with Palm-Wines, plentiful on this Island and the whole Coast, although a natural Distillation from the Tree does without fermenting, [Footnote: Others say Palm Wines, and all Liquors, before they gain a Spirit, must have some preceding Fermentation. here it is of few Hours, and little Despumation. Farther North 'tis slower, and with more.] become intoxicating, in large Quantities. And what is worse, they frequently lay down in these Inebriations, exposed to the Chills and Dews of __ the Night, whence a sudden Check is given to Perspiration, at a Time it is most wanted, and consequently Fevers, more or less malignant, are brought on as their preceding Conduct has made those other afore-mentioned co-operating Causes, more or less powerful." (Atkins, p. 356-8)

Stockings... does better than average exist?????

So you wear your garters inside your breeches, above the knee? I'd definitely need new ones for that. The ones I own are too small in diameter. I don't think the cuffs of my breeches are big enough to allow garters, though. I don't really have a big problem with the black garters. I do notice that the socks eventually slip from the garters if I'm active, though. Something else I noticed at Paynetown is that the L-W socks start getting all prickly after I've been wearing them for a while. I actually took them off there because it was really starting to bother me. (It was quite hot there, so that may have had something to do with it.) -
Wow...how do I miss such people when I'm fishing for stories? Does he have any medical equipment?

I assume much will be lost, due to some cataclysm or (more likely) due to pure negligence and/or lack of funding. When reading period account with modern footnotes, I am amazed that many books have not survived. Still, it is a good point that there is a lot more material. As Hurricane mentioned (I think) we have more leisure time which gives us the ability to be fascinated with ourselves. We also have access to much better, cheaper and easier ways to record our thoughts and actions. Still, I think it would be funny that 350 years from now some student of history or whatever leisure pursuit takes the place of re-enacting (Though projection re-enacting? Something even more amazing we can't even begin to envision?) may be poring this very thread and trying to understand it and our motives, predilections and inclinations. (The truth is probably so much more banal than what it may seem to them. )

I was sitting there, poring over yet another copy of an archaic 350 year old surgical journal trying to comprehend just what the writer was saying, seeing, feeling and thinking when it struck me that some day, 350 years from now, some person may be sitting there (whereever there may be) poring over yet another copy of an archaic 350 year old forum post, trying to comprehend just what the writer was saying, seeing, feeling and thinking. You know? "...we are simply passing through history. This, this is history." -René Belloq

Stockings... does better than average exist?????
Mission replied to Jas. Hook's topic in Crafting Kit
Just for the record, I'm not feeling sorry for myself nor trying to make anyone else feel bad for me. I sort of like having spent my whole life as a diabetic - it makes me special. (This is why I got to ride the special bus. ) I'm just explaining why I feel no compunction about not attempting absolute accuracy. I'm ok with elastic, if, in fact, I have it in my socks. -

Mission replied to Jas. Hook's topic in Crafting Kit
Ok, I am the first to admit I try for historical, but I am no slave to (historical) fashion. If you can't see the elastic, I don't have a problem with it. I wear an insulin pump, which you can't see either. I also have to be really cautious about my feet (being diabetic) so I also wear gel soles in my shoes to protect them. Since I would be foolish to give up such things for the sake of accuracy, I'll never be truly PC which I feel gives me license. Personally, I'm ok with that. I figure it's fine so long as I don't try to join a crew that insists on strict interpretation. (Which I would never do out of respect for my personal beliefs and their rules.) I do own garters. Unfortunately, I can't wear them above the knee where they'd need to be to hold up the stupid linsey woolsey socks up when I'm wearing my breeches (I actually did get two pair of my L-W socks from Hamilton DG, so they may not have elastic in them which could be why I don't like them.) I got my new socks from Greg at Weeping Heart and I assumed they had elastic because they stay up so well, but maybe they don't either. Alas, fashion is not my bailiwick (Ask anyone who sees me day-to-day. ), so I don't even know if the socks I have contain elastic or not. To be honest, if I didn't have Michael and Kate looking out for me, advising me not to wear red shirts and such, I'd be a dead loss as far as the period clothing goes. I'm primarily interested in researching period surgeons and translating and explaining what I've learned. Well...that and hanging out with people who play pirates and telling tales about such. So, in the end socks that look pretty good and stay up are what is important to me. While I may not have much fashion sense, I do know I look pretty silly in all those pics I like to post on the web with bare knees. -
*Choke* You purchased space?! You are wayyy to good to us, papa. Thanks!

Sorry for what? Everyone is familiar with the drunken surgeon...
