  1. ::looks back at HarborMaster::: Wish I could play Pirate, mate. Alas, doesn't happen.

We dress up... that's one thing. Now, portraying a pirate, either historically accurate or along the lines of Pirate Lore... that's another thing! And doesn't happen often! Walking around in garb... cool. But, dull. Becoming the part (in scenarios with battles, or tavern gigs, in the stocks or a hanging, etc) that's the major fun there.

To each his own I guess, like I said reality is relative, what may be fun to some, is not fun to others, what real pirate is to some is not what a real pirate is to others. Classify if you must, but I think that there is just to much gray space to lump it in to two groups, for me at least. If two pirate categories is fine for some people, well then cool.

Being from the west coast we don't get too many living history events, dealing with pirates at least.

I do however live near the garment district in Los Angeles, where they have all sorts of material for really cheap prices.:rolleyes::ph34r:

  2. I figure that Hollywood Pyrate covers all parts of just playing.... all the way from a "spot on" Jack Sparrow, to including Howard Pyle Pyrates.... and anything that is the common culturaly conception of Pyracy......

I don't know I guess reality is relative. I still take "Hollywood Pirate" as a derogatory remark, even if it isn't meant to be, I don't know why, just me I guess. Maybe because, there are a lot of horrible looking costumes, that came out in some films, or maybe that the common public conception of a pirate has been around well before the first silent film had been made. And to be thrown into that lot kinda puts me off. True I do this for fun and since I suffer from ataraxia I could care less what someone thinks of or has to say about my kit. But if someone at an event says "Thats a hollywood pirate, he doesn't look like a real pirate", I ain't gonna give the guy a hug. ;) I don't get offended, but thats kind of a dick thing to say. I don't really classify peoples kits, to me it looks good or it doesn't, "to me" being the key words. In mister Pyles defense, I have alot of his art and most of them are what the safe assumption of what pirates looked like. If we do need to put "Jack Sparrow and Howard Pyle Pyrates" into a classification I would say that "pirate myth" is a better term, not saying thats not what they looked like, but its debatable.

    Cheers

    ;)

  3. Took Silkie's advice.

    Slept on it.

Still tired of the crap, but I have always believed in fighting for what's mine and what I believe is right...(okay I make a lousy pirate but a great privateer)

So William hopefully you will get your wish for the perfect hat in 8-9 years from now... and thank you William, Silkie, Briar, Syren, Red Cat, Ransom, and of course Cheeky...

Oh, and Cheeks, a little more gently the next time you try pounding common sense into me over the phone! And I hope you settle whatever the problem is that you are having with that other person as well. If you handle them the way you do me, they'll come around...give it time.

Fight for what ya love not what ya hate, fight fire with water, only way to put out the fire. Aint nothin a cold ber can't solve.

Then again I sufer from Ataraxia. :D:blink:B)

    HAPPY FRIDAY!

  5. I couldn't agree with you more, Barbossa. I think that there are just too many different types of kits to lump them in to two groups. I think what really gets to me is that, I don't want to be catagorized with the costume store, renaissance and belly dancer pirate that you see at alot of faires. I think its just in our human nature to catagorize things. The thing with POTC, is they are what pirates could of looked liked. The thing with the living history folks, is that they cannot use something in their kit unless it has been historically documented, no exceptions, in order to be accurate. We all know where I stand on boots, well instead of just taking the word for granted that they didn't ware them, I did my own research and came up with my own conclusion. B) I don't claim to be exactlly historically period, but I sure as hell ain't hollywood or fantasy ither.

    Cheers

  6. "Elizabeth - The Golden Age" is terrific.

Wonderful sea battles and a little kick-in-the-pants to scruffy heros of the Period.

Not time for a full on review just now (will come back later ) but see it this weekend if you can

    I agree, AWESOME!

  7. BILLY! How have ya been mate!? My friends and I used to have this arcade game in the garage of the house we used to rent out. Anyway, it was a neogeo, you could change out the game in the back of it. We used to play this game Busta Move, into the we hours of the morning, while putting down quite a few beers. I would pass out and have dreams of that game. Drove me insane.

  8. and having ordered out the boat, he commanded six men in her, in old ordinary jackets, while he himself, with the master and doctor, dressed themselves like gentlemen; his design being, that the men should look like common sailors, and they like merchants;

He didn't order 6 men to put on ordinary jackets, he order 6 men that were already dress as sailors, already in ordinary jackets to get into the boat.

The only people actually quoted as changing into other clothes, or into a disguise are "he himself", the master, and the doctor. Interesting that their disguise is to "dress up" like gentlemen.... leading us to believe that even in these positions of authority, they were not already dressing like gentlemen.

So another way to write it would be "we told six regular sailors in their ordinary sailors clothes to get into the boat, while we dressed up like gentlemen so we would appear to be more like a regular merchant ship and crew.

Of course, that is just how I read it.

    GOF

Thats how I read that as well, he stating it adjectivally to describe the difference between himself and the other sailors.

In my personal opinion, people are people, and given the opportunity to go on a shopping spree, so to speak, I think that they would take full advantage of an opportunity, " Thats a nice coat, I'll take that" or "Thats a nice coat, I could sell that" especially giving the situation where they wouldn't know where their next source of income would be coming from and taking whatever form of currency they could find. Beggars can't be choosers you know. <_<;)

  9. I belive I have those exact shoes, not real leather, but ware them to a couple of events and get thenm nice and durty, nobody can tell the difference. The only problem is that they are slick as @#*&!.

  10. Ok, so I ordered these planes from bateau.com about two years ago and just kinda sat on um. I tried to find a nice little wooden row boat, but out here on the left coast, they are rare and or expensive. So I figured I would start this post to document its progress. Or any one else how has started building a boat. All I have left to do is; sand the whole bloody thing, rub rail, seat tops, mast, coat the damn thing in epoxy and then paint. All fear the good ship MAKO!:ph34r::ph34r::ph34r: \
