FireFly: Inara or Kaylee
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Beyond Pyracy
Yes.... Kaylee is the kind that you could go camping with and wouldn't bring more than a small back pack. Could you imagine Inara on a camping trip? Black John should appreciate that. Greg -
FireFly: Inara or Kaylee
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Beyond Pyracy
Ahhhhh but it just shows their potential. Wipe the grease off of Kaylee and put her in a dress and presto! Also Yeah... River is much hotter in the modern picture, but don't forget, at the time of the original firefly, she was about 20 years old playing a teenager (16?) and they are trying to make her look like a teenager. By the time they were filming Serenity, she is a 24/25 year old trying to do the same thing. She does look good though.... Greg -

FireFly: Inara or Kaylee
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Beyond Pyracy
I think its an apples and oranges argument. Sure, Kaylee "cracked" under pressure when the ship was being attacked, but then again, that is not what she is there for to begin with. I don't think that Wash, Simon, or Kaylee are your warrior types... and no telling what River is good for when she is un-medicated. So if you want the warrior woman, it HAS to be Zoe, no questions asked. But when the ship goes belly up... who is your man (actually woman)? Thats right... come crawling back to Kaylee, cauze not only does she have the hottie girl-next-door thing down pat, but hey... she keeps you in the sky too! And they needed a mechanic to fix the ship waaay more often then they needed the respectability to get onto a planet. Besides, Inara doesn't do crew members. So its just eye candy. But you did raise another interesting point.... Saffron.... mmmmmmmm..... Saffron! Greg ***EDIT*** these comments pertain to Firefly only. I haven't seen Serenity yet, so I can't comment on that. -
Well this is a horse of a different color. If you like Science fiction, chances are good that you would love Firefly. But if you are not really a fan of the genre, then it will be a toss up. Fortunately, its sci-fi, western, and drama... so you might luck out. Greg

Dude... If you can start the series, and NOT shot gun one after the other for a few days till you get er done, than... please post back here and tell us about it. I thought I would watch one every once in a while (which is what i did with Stargate Atlantis). Ended up watching it in about 2-3 days. About half the way through, I had this really sad feeling though... I knew it was going to be over (that is, that the show was canceled and that was it) and kept dreading it. Greg

FireFly: Inara or Kaylee
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Beyond Pyracy
Same line of thinking... But different selection Gil Island: Ginger... no question (and hey, if the carpet matches the drapes its a bonus!) Firefly: Kaylee. My caveat above was Inara's training which I am sure is well worth the admission price, but the girl alone, Kaylee. Hell, I'd drink either one's bathwater though! GoF -
I couldn't help thinking though, of the comparison between "Mary Anne" and "Ginger" of Gilligan's Island, and Kaylee and Inara of Firefly. (not that they are similar characters mind you, but there has always been kind of a "male" choice.... Mary Anne or Ginger? Kaylee is the home grown girl next door type and Inara is the Hottie "Dream" girl type.... So Question 1 Kaylee or Inara? (Ok.... DESPITE that fact that Inara has had... "professional" training!) Question 2 Ginger or Mary Ann? Anyone?

As usual, I am late to the party. I have been living in Europe for the last decade so I have missed all the significant TV in that time period. (I have seen the first season of 24 and the first season of Stargate Atlantis) But on recommendation by the folks here and other forums, I bought the complete Firefly collection via e-bay. Wow. I can't say enough good things about it. Definitely worthy of praise that has been heaped upon it. It scratches lots of itches at the same time (Cowboy, Sci-fi, Drama etc). Good writing, and great characters. Its filmed in such a way that you really feel yourself a part of what is going on. Cool. I couldn't help thinking though, of the comparison between "Mary Anne" and "Ginger" of Giligan's Island, and Kaylee and Inara of Firefly. (not that they are similar characters mind you, but there has always been kind of a "male" choice.... Mary Anne or Ginger? Kaylee is the home grown girl next door type and Inara is the Hottie "Dream" girl type.... maybe I'll start another thread.... Greg

Brace yourselves lads.... With the Re-enactor Fest III now on the same weekend as PiP, you are probably going to see some folks backing out of PiP (mostly since RFIII is targeting east coast re-enactors, and a good portion of the east coast's pirates live in the North East.) Fortunately, there is still time to plan, and re-plan. But I am guessing that the Head count is going to change. greg

Yes, its going to be interesting to see the folks that "quasi-committed" to PiP back out to go to RF3.... GoF

Copyright Piracy? What bugs me is finding my stuff on someone else's page, and then they put copyright stuff on top of it.... sheesh! But to be honest, I don't mind my stuff being used as long as they would put a link in to my site... but that must be too much trouble. GoF

What's your favorite smell???
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Capt. Marcus Keys's topic in Beyond Pyracy
I am not sure what the exact "smell" is, my wife says it mold. But the smell is in an old attic, basement, shed etc. My love of it comes from "searching" in these areas for treasure. My Great Uncle had a traveling carnival before WW1 and after the war he owned an antique shop. He died in the early 60s (I never met him) but, when I was a kid, we would visit my great aunt during the summer school break. Here house was FILLED with stuff, and the 20 x 20 work shed out in the back yard was full of stuff. My brothers and I would go "exploring" in the shed for hours on end. The place was literally full to the top with old circus/carnival trunks and boxes and loose stuff.... One box would have 30 WW1 uniforms in it. The next would have a complete traveling .22 caliber target range (complete with knock down targets and revolving ducks!). Old tools, military antiques, books, clothes from the turn of the last century, etc etc And it all smelled old and moldy (my wife says).... but to me, I associate it with finding cool stuff. So when I go into an antique shop and it has that "smell", I KNOW i am going to find something, somewhere! Greg -
Yes, there is even a record of such (I think Foxe posted it already). But I would think this would be impromptu only as flag material needs to be able to fly, and heavy painted canvas may not do this so well.... This is from a little later period (late 18th) Century Spanish Ensign that is freakin huge... Wool bunting, single ply Gof

I just checked the Frappr Pyracy Pub map (common you slugs, if you haven't already marked your spot, do it now! http://www.frappr.com/pyracypub ) And there really isn't any body in that area.... Its a shame that we don't have any pirates in this pub from practically the home of GAoP piracy! Greg aka GoF
-
How about posting your clothes sizes... My wife and I have lots of extra' good condition stuff, if you are needing it. Also, Do you have a post box in the local area to the ship so we can send it directly? Any Pub members in that neck of the woods ? Greg aka GoF

Mike Personally, I don't think its such a bad option until a 2ply x single ply wool bunting comes along I re-read some of the threads posted above and wanted to chime in on something that Foxe had posted. The topic was "Black" and he had mentioned that what we think "Black" might have been could have been dark grey, dark brown, dark blue etc. I have several wool bunting flags whose configuration is listed as black and yellow, or black and white, and appear that way when looked at from a distance of greater than 5 feet or so. But when you look at it closely, it really is a deeeeeep daaaark blue. Historically, this may make sense as well, since it was probably easier and cheaper to dye something "blue" than to get a true black. Greg

I think that the standard flag making materials for GAoP were probably wool bunting and silk. Some of the period flags at the Maritime Museum in London are made from wool bunting. The trick is, wool bunting isn't made anymore. What it is, is a gauze like weave of worsted wool. If I recall correctly, the other tricky wicket is that GAoP era bunting was 2-ply warp (lengthwise threads) with single ply weft threads. So even the 20th century wool bunting flags are single ply x single ply threads. Sooooo..... I am not sure that there is "the best way" to make a period flag. But there certainly is "a" way. I am finding old wool bunting flags and "reconfiguring" them to be pirate flags. This may be a historic approach, since a ship at sea in the 1690s didn't have a Pirates-R-Us to visit to buy a standard flag. When Foxe's book finally comes out, we might even have a better idea of the range of colors and markings on legitimate pirate flags. Greg aka GoF

Historically... burning out?
Gentleman of Fortune replied to Gentleman of Fortune's topic in Captain Twill
Actually, Longarm, that is EXACTLY why I am burning out. I have spent $1000's of dollars on clothes and weapons, and am stuck in the middle of Germany with not a lot to do. There is a small and growing Pirate LARP movement in Germany, and I am not trying to diminish their efforts, but for me, to get to an event, it means either a flight to the UK or the States.... And with 2 kids under 5, its just about impossible to do. When I am back in the states (usually for 4 weeks in summer) my time gets filled with Doctor/Dental appointments for the family and Visiting relations. Telling the wife I am leaving her and the kids to go off and "play" for a weekend goes over like a fart in church..... So.... here I sit, pouring over documents, sweating the details on hand sewn garments, and spending $$$ on kits items that, in all likelihood, will never get used (by me). Its being a "virtual" pirate that is burning me out. Greg aka GoF -
Time to change the boats name again? How about Phoenix Greg
