  1. First off, it is called a waggoner (or a derrotero or a roteiro or a rutter) and you may find a copy of Basil Ringrose's South Seas Waggoner in a decent university library (ISBN 0520054105 ), as it is currently out of print.
  2. Patrick, the bar on the wenches chest doesn't quite match the motto, don't you find?
  3. When I want to see that, I go to a play by Ionesco, Beckett (no relation) or Sartre, but not a Disney movie.
  4. Given that most numbers are the third variation of the POTC theme and that one was openly stolen from "Once Upon A Time In The West", I find that a bold statement.
  5. There were so many aspects "brought full circle" in that piece, that when I left the theatre, my entire head was circling!
  6. Now there's something you don't even find in the Kama Sutra!
  7. Perhaps you shoulda read the article you posted: If the wreck was in Spanish waters, it does of course belong to Spain. Too funny, indeed.
  8. Caraccioli: To that I say a wholehearted and thorough AYE!
  9. The planks are not the problem. It's the same as with a car: If the frame has had it, then it's sayonara, no matter how good the outer appearance may be. And my guess is that some parts of the Cutty Sark's frame had temperatures near or in excess of 1000 degrees centigrade, which suffices to soften up the crystalline structure of steel.
  10. After all these laurels, I'd like to throw my hat into the ring as well. First off, I am a huge pirate movie fan. I mean, like in HUGE. And I really wanted POTC3 to be the thunderous end to an astounding trilogy. I swear to God I did. Unfortunately, POTC3 did not live up to those expectations. I have avoided all possible spoilers and actually the entire "Pop" thread until the soundtrack came out, because I did not want to fall victim to the "movie overhype" syndrome, that many of us still know from the first "Batman" movie. So I went to the theatre (, full of vim and modest hopes). I thought that after the weak second part, hey, things could only get better. Boy was I in for a surprise. POTC2 already made it difficult to follow the various storylines: Bootstrap and Will, Will and Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Jack, Jack vs. Jones, Jones vs. Bootstrap and Beckett versus all. (Sort in Norrington, Gov. Swann, Pintel and Ragetti as you see fit) Enter POTC3. Same as #2, plus an astonishingly uninspired Sao Feng and a nicely played Tia Dalma to make matters generally irritating. Two hours later and after the same "I bargain with you only to backstab you two minutes later" routine that already stalled part two, finally, the great climactic battle ensues. "Finally" not because it signals that the movie is about to end, but because the battle is really good and well done. A highlight of the movie is the reappearance of Geoffrey Rush, although even he suffers from annoying dialogues at times. Johnny Depp's dialogues are so anxiously "witty" that - as I wrote in my previous post- I could not help but cringe in despair. The chemistry between Will and Elizabeth is OK, but Orlando Bloom's Will remains as pallid as his Legolas character from LOTR. To sum it up, it is an acceptable pirate movie if you take the genre as a whole, but it is a sorry conclusion of the POTC saga. I hope that they will not do yet another sequel, as they seem so intent to satisfy every which viewers need that they could only screw it up entirely. Let it stay where it is now and be done with it.
  11. Just came back from the German premiere, and my opinion is: So- so. Terrible dragging the first two thirds, Johnny Depp's dialogues made me cringe more often than not, but the showdown battle had its nice moments. More when I have slept over it.
  12. Odyssey denies that coins are from HMS "Sussex" and confirms a deal with Disney.
  13. Sorry if I offended anyone, but I usually speak my mind and don't like beating around the bush. @ the original poster: There are numerous sources for obtaining a real flintlock- and doglock or flintlock it should be, as those are the weapons of choice for the discriminating buccaneer: The best Queen Annes come from Pedersoli, as Jim has already pointed out. But they do come for a price; quality in the arms sector never comes cheap. Another good source for period arrr!ms is Loyalist Arms, or the Rifle Shoppe, only to get you started. Talking about starters: As you seem quite new to the firearms business, a good address for familiarizing yourself with the matter would be The Muzzleloading Forum.
  14. This (terrible) replica is not good for firing anything.
  15. There already is a thread for that: Possible Richest Shipwreck Found!, Estimated value: US$500 million
  16. London's Cutty Sark On Fire The preserved 19th-century ship the Cutty Sark is on fire, London Fire Brigade has confirmed. It is said to be 100% alight and eight fire engines are at the scene in Greenwich, south-east London. Greenwich town centre is closed to traffic and the Docklands Light Railway will also close because of a police cordon, Scotland Yard said. Local residents were also expected to be evacuated shortly. The ship, one of the capital's best-loved tourist attractions, is currently closed to the public for extensive renovation work. It was due to reopen in 2009. For more, see here.
  17. I don't think the AWE Soundtrack is much of a highlight, perhaps with the exception of "I Don't Think Now Is The Best Time" and maybe "Drink Up Me Hearties". The rest is just vanilla POTC tracks in their nth variation. "Parlay" is even a blatant plagiarism from Ennio Morricone's "Once Upon a Time In The West" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly" themes, including e guitar and harmonica. Nothing really new there. Hopefully the movie makes good for this.
  18. LOL! Just checked my saved files and I found a POTBS teaser dated from Nov 2003 stating that "Adventure sets sail Spring 2004". Yeah, right.
  19. If POTBS continues the way it did for the last three years, it'll be at least another four years till it is released.
  20. S'pose it'll get you a few pounds of hamburger meat and 20 cents in change?
  21. Wheels on the bottom do not necessarily indicate its sea- unworthiness: This one has wheels as well, and still it can float (though not r/c, but motor- powered):
  22. Plus, it's one of the ugliest. But I guess, you can always melt it down.
