  1. The picture is of the Acheron, from the scene where they're towing the Suprise into the fog bank... the Acheron fires one last broadside before the Suprise loses them in the fog.

I know the 'Rose' website says it's the CGI Rose, but that looks exactly like the scene I mentioned.

  2. When I grow up, Hawkins is who I want to be... I am slowly working toward that end... I know the SCA isn't the same on most levels, but that's the realm I play in for the time being.

I stumbled across the SCA 5 years ago now, and started actively playing a year later. When I first "came in", I didn't know a rapier from a broadsword, and hadn't ever SEEN a hand-forged, functional blade... I wore a "costume" to my first event, and was met with some disdain, because pirates are generally frowned upon in the SCA. (some idiots in the SCA are still conviced that firearms and pirates didn't exist until 1650 or so) So I changed my personna to something a bit more... acceptable. I learned how to do some leatherworking, woodworking, metalworking, I learned a bit of calligraphy and illumination (scribal arts), learned a bit about brewing, etc. I eventually got rid of my mass-production made-in-pakistan/taiwan/china stainless steeel blades. Eventually I got better garb, trading my "costume" for "clothes". I'm not to that 100% accurate look yet, but I'm doing alot better than most people in my area.

I carry real weapons because well... it's a weapon. If it's not real, what's the point? A new guy at our last meeting was showing off his "hand made dragon sword that he had forged for him"... it appalled me how many people bought his story. Anyone with half a brain who are supposed to know about blades could tell it was a pakistan fantasy sword.

The only weapon I carry that's not real, and that's only once in a while, is a repro flintlock pistol... and that's only till I get a real one to replace it, then it goes in the trash.

    B)

  3. I don't fit in any of the above either, per-sey. :D

We reenact, but our group does it for fun, it's not "work". We also dess and get in character and raid local mundan/modern events for the fun of it, everyone loves pirates. So we aren't just pirates on the "job"... most of us are pirates all the time. (I use any excuse I can to wear my garb... I find it more comfortable than regular clothes, and people don't even bat an eye when ye carry weapons if yer in garb. :D )

We also drink our share of rum and other alcohol... :D

We would like to sail, or at least boat, and we are in the process of acquiring one... but we don't steal to live, and I bathe most every day. :)

I agree... much as I love PotC, Jack Sparrow is a tad over the top. :D

And I think He got "gully" from Muppet treasure Island... :D

And what I smuggle/pirate in real life is me own buisness, not that any of it's terribly illegal.

    :D

  4. From a playing perspective:

In the SCA, when I fight "Heavy" (Rattan weapons and heavy armor) I fight cutlass-style, although usually with either a shield or another sword. I also fight rapier, which hurts less, is less restrictive, and IMO more fun.

    From an "In-Character" perspective:

The Rapier is the weapon of Gentlemen and Nobles... As I am Lord Duncan MacNamara, and as such minor Nobility (recieved the award of arms 2 years ago), I have been trained with the Rapier. However, I preferr a Cutlass for it's advantages as a close quarters weapon.

But my favorite would be my cannons and other firearms...

  5. I still say he deserves to swing!

COA my ass... anyone can print a "COA" on parchment paper which is readily available at every wal-mart...

"Pirates Of The Caribbean Prop Sword Wood Handle"

    64_1.JPG

I only obtained a few of these from our prop distributor, but they are unique and from all I know about pirates it is authentic as it has a wood handle, back then pirates had to make weapons cheaply as possible until they could steal a better one, as you see we have many of these props listed, this to comes with a Letter Of Authenticity and from what our distributor says was mainly used by the pirate crew while filming. 30" In Size with wooden handle & sheath. See our complete line of movie props. Buyer to pay shipping.

    :lol::lol::lol::lol:

If'n that's an authentic Pirate sword prop, I be Long John Silver! It's clearly cut/pasted from an el-cheapo knife/sword catalog... and the wording of the listing seems pretty clear to me.

from all I know about pirates

    Indeed...

Someone blow that lubber out of the water, sez I!

  6. :D:D:D:D

    Right on!

One of these days... (probably after 2006 tax return time :D ) I'm going to get me, my lady, and at least some of my crew to california so's we can sail aboard a proper vessel for a day.

It's a shame you're not located in the Gulf, but I understand, what with all the hurricanes... but if ye were in the houston area, or plan to be some day... :)

  7. At least I got a crew... we may not have a ship, but we got eachother...

One day we plan on boarding the Royaliste and runnin' up our colors... she's a mighty fine boat... er, Ship.

  8. I need to get me a good metal lathe...

I just finished "refurbishin" my second mini-cannon, another 3 incher... I knows fer a fact I could make some bigger cannons if'n I has the proper tools.

for both of these shots, I used about half the recommended powder for the bore size... and they still fired beautifully

    CannonFireGif.GIF

    LegoPirateCannon.GIF

Oh, and by the way... kids, don't try this at home... wrong amount of powder and ye'd be in a world o' hurt, not ta' mention the melted plastic...

  9. You really ought not to double post... ranks in the forum don't mean anything, really... And as far as I know, people who continually abuse post inflation are forced to walk the plank...

Now then... I know a few pirates... and after a few weeks at sea, they all start to smell a little rank!

  10. I half expected the little cannon to blow apart on the first firing, but I figured out a good measure for it... as long as I only fire blank charges... the lego thing was for coolies... I'm getting another of these little cannons, thinking of mounting them to my lego ship and figuring out how to rig a remote detonation.

But I got a kick out of blowing up the lego dude... hehe

  11. I have a 3-inch long brass cannon, which is just a tad larger than a lego cannon...

I may be evil, but I put a Lego Brit in front of the muzzle and let fire :o

    It was spectacular... :o:o:o

Here's a pic of the test-firing of this tiny little cannon. it has a 1/4 inch bore, and fires just a pinch of powder, but she makes a beautiful flash and smoke for her size.

    CannonFireGif.GIF

Sorry for the darkness of the pic, but I wanted to do it at night since darkness makes for a more impressive flash

    :o:o:o:o:o

    Here's the "Lego" incident

  12. Ahh... This gets a tad complicated...

In the SCA... I seem to have started something... I had a ship, the 'Iron Lotus'. (Not a physical ship, mind you... not yet anyway...) Well, last weekend, my Quartermaster was having a little drinking contest, as he boasted that no one could out-drink an "Irish Pirate". I'm not sure what HE wagered, but one of the other participants wagered their ship... Long story short, My Quartermaster now owns his own Ship, which he is assembling a crew for and is going to "sail under my colors".

Since I am still the Captain of the Iron Lotus, I'm not an admiral... thus, I am now a Commodore, yes?

'opefully I dinna confuzzle ye too much...

  13.

None-the-less, he mentions it in POTC... so it stands to reason that if POTC II is set in aisa, that we could very well see Singapore. As it's been said before in this very thread, Disney doesn't stick strictly to history... It's there for entertainment, and I think it would be very entertaining to see some of the things Cap'n Jack mentioned in POTC

  14. Someone told me that POTC 2 is going to be a prequel, not a sequel... Dunno about that, but I do know the Moneky at the end of POTC re-started the curse... If'n any o' ye watched the movie past the credits, I know alot of people don't. And Barbossa was clearly layin' face-down dead in the water...

In any case, POTC is my favorite Pirate movie... And POTC 2 is titled such so far because it's going to be either a prequel or sequel to POTC... And a franchise title has nothing to do with the "setting" of the actual film.

And if'n it be set in aisa, so much the better... might get to see what ol' Jack was talkin' about... "Clearly you've never been to Singapore"

  15. 'ow much loot'd this 'ere cruise be costin'? My lady wife and I may be interested in a late '05 / early '06 cruise... 'specially if'n it be pirate-themed, and moreso if'n it be aboard a tall ship 'o sorts... :)

And even more if'n garb be allowed... or required... I likes ta wear me garb

    :huh::huh:

  16. My crew and I operate within the SCA. We do a little singing, partying, and rapier-style fighting, among other things... Kind of a Pyrattical melting-pot, if'n ya catch my drift.

But for a word of advice... Don't let yer crew become mired in politics... There's enouh politics in the other organizations and groups we associate with.
