  1. I like Bart Roberts' flag where he's drinkin' with the devil.
  2. I know several members of the Port Royal Privateers (the club I'm in) are into blackpowder firearms and small cannon. We also number a few swordsmen and swordswomen among our members. And we do participate in tall ship sails along the Southern California coast, but not on a regular basis. A favorite for us is the annual Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point, where many of our members enjoy sailing on the ships in costume all weekend. Many of our members also enjoy the annual reenactment of the pirate raid on the Mission San Juan Capistrano: all the firearms, cannon and steel come out, along with pyrotechnics and "true to life" gory blood packs courtesy of our member pyrotechnician, Juan de la Kaboom (Jon Rose).
  3. Awright, one o' us wenches has to say it: tampons!
  4. I have to agree with JoshuaRed. I was disappointed in Cutthroat Island when it first came out. I've watched it several times since, and I always think how much better it could have been. The "car chase" scene near the beginning was so hard to watch--so stupid. I couldn't stand to hear Geena Davis deliver her lines: a more wooden performance I've never seen. Matthew Modine's character seemed superfluous--no real reason for him to be there other than to translate the map. I think Frank Langella was a great pirate, he really sunk his teeth into the role (no pun intended). But as a whole, not a great pirate movie.
  5. The Princess and the Pirate is a guilty pleasure for me! Not as good a parody as Muppet Treasure Island, but I like a lot of old Bob Hope movies. I also like The Pirate with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland--mostly because of Gene Kelly.
  6. I have that book in my library, and I concur with Morick. It covers an aspect of buccaneers and pirates of the 17th centuries that is often mentioned, but glossed over. I'm talking about the "buddy" system the buccaneers had, mateloge, I think is the term. Since not a lot of historical documentation exists on the topic, it is written from the modern perspective and in a sense speculates on what relationships were like, etc. It is a serious, scholarly work.
  7. If money's no object (LOL) definitely check out Center Stage Costumes on the Internet. I bought one of their hats (style name: Pirate King) and am very happy with it. (No, that's not it in my avatar pic. That's a photo from my early buccaneering days; I'm wearing a cavalier style hat there, one I got at a Ren faire.)
  8. Hey, and don't forget Amazon.com and other Internet sources (including foreign). I have a pretty good collection of American, English and French sea chanteys and sea songs on CD, all gleaned from those sources as well as Ren faires, Tower Records, Virgin Megastores, etc.
  9. I forgot about that one! Yes, it's actually considered one of the best fencing scenes in moviedom.
  10. I really do love the fencing scene in Captain Blood, between Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone. Classic, on the beach, surrounded by pirate crews, and with Olivia DeHavilland looking on, etc.
  11. I remember seeing that one too, and I liked it! It was a fun, Hollywood pirates kind of movie. I think it's so funny how Doug McClure is parodied on The Simpsons (as the character Troy McClure).
  12. I didn't much like Cutthroat Island at first, but the more I watch it, the more it grows on me. Would you believe I've never seen Against All Flags from beginning to end? I always manage to catch it on TV in the middle or end. And I hear it's one of the top pirate movies!
  13. My favorites: The Black Swan Captain Blood Muppet Treasure Island Those three I can never watch too many times. I also like the Masterpiece Theatre version of Frenchman's Creek.
  14. I was wondering if it might be possible to put a link somewhere in the pub so we could go to the @pyracy.com email function easier? OK, I guess I could bookmark it next time, but right now, I forget and have to go to the pinned message for the link.
  15. I have the pirate cutlass from Museum Replicas, and according to them, it's stage combat ready. But I don't use it for that (don't want to get it all scratched up!!). It has a nice balance. But if there are less expensive blades out there, I'm interested in them too. Looking for swords that don't look too much like they're from a later period. (Many of the ones sold as pirate cutlasses on eBay are actually Civil War era sabres. Oy!)
  16. I like the slops at Center Stage Costumes too. Even though they're a poly/cotton blend, they might do--says they're canvas, so I'd guess it's not a thin lightweight fabric. Would be nice to see a swatch in person, though.
  17. Lovely! But Duane is not a Port Royal Privateer. He is, however, a good friend of ours and has come to several of our events. We meet up with him every year at the Mission San Juan Capistrano (CA) Pirate Festival where he portrays Hippolyte Bouchard.
  18. Greetings from the Left Coast of the United States of America! I hail from the Los Angeles area (Burbank, CA) and am a member of that fine Southern California crew, the Port Royal Privateers. I wanted to thank the Forum Captain for setting up this site, I look forward to seeing the activity grow as more sea rovers find this port and drop anchor for a visit.
