A little more on the Port Royal Privateers: 2003 is our 10th anniversary. We started with 13 members; the current roster has 84 active members and applicants. Our members live primarily in Southern California, from Thousand Oaks to San Diego; but we also have out of state members (they come to one or two events each season). Our activities consist of maritime festivals, Ren-type fairs, and private events. One of our favorites is coming up: the Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point. We're the official pirate encampment of that festival and it seems to grow in popularity each year. Another favorite event coming up is our annual Drunken Mermaid Tavern night. This is a private party where we rent a hall and transform it for one night into a rowdy late 17th century tavern in Port Royal, Jamaica, during her hey day before the great quake of 1692. Members and applicants receive a regularly issued newsletter (I'm working on #93 as we speak) and a subscription to No Quarter Given is included with paid membership. Oh, you're talking about the home page of the Pyracy Pub, not NQG. I was confused! Yes, two of the three are from the Port Royal Privateers. The lass is Denise Kraensel. The fellow on the far right is Louie Lambie. (He most certainly is photogenic; you can see more pics of him on our website, follow the link in my sig.) The fellow in the middle is Duane (can't remember his last name), he plays Hippolyte Bouchard at the annual raid re-enactment at the Mission San Juan Capistrano in California.

Aye, this year's Chantey Fest at the Star is scheduled for Sept. 21. There are usually chantey singers at the Tallship Fest in Dana Point. This year's event is the weekend after Labor Day. The Port Royal Privateers have participated at both events over the years, and will be at Dana Point this year for certain. (Not sure yet about San Diego.)

I am trying to imagine a movie scene of musketeers firing and reloading their weapons, with witty repartee in between. It'd sort of be like an old west shootout, but really really slow.

In defense of the Musketeers: they were an elite corps of soldiers, assigned to guarding the King. They were expert swordsmen in addition to being expert marksmen. Since muskets could only be fired once before they had to be reloaded, it made sense for these guys to be proficient with the rapier, since they would find themselves battling hand to hand where muskets (and the time it took to reload them) were less than useful. Now, if ye be referring to the dearth of movie scenes with 'em actually shootin' muskets...well, firin' muskets ain't as dramatic as a good ol' fashioned fencing duel!

No, all the talk on this thread means they don't want any pirate groups actually participating as part of the faire. If you'll be attendin' as a payin' guest (or otherwise some kind o' ticket holder), they'll let ye in. 'ods blood, they let in folk dressed like fairies, wizards and whatnot--'course they'll let in pirates. Money's all the same color!

I'd be interested in seeing more pirate art! BTW, there's an exhibit currently at the Disney Gallery (above the POTC ride) featuring art (sketches, watercolors, sculptures too) used during the design of the ride. There's also a related movie exhibit.

Lookin' for books on Barbary Coast corsairs, preferably during the 17th century. Any recommendations? I have "The Barbary Slaves" by Stephen Clissold, and it's pretty good, but I'd like to find other good ones.

You have to check out Richard Becker's comics series. I know he has a web site, but I don't know it off the top of my head. I happen to own a rubber art stamp company that specializes in rubber stamps of pirate themes, sea life, mermaids, etc. (Even have some designs by our own Jamaica Rose.) Rubber stamp hobbyists use the stamps to create artwork, anything from greeting cards to jewelry.

I just watched The Black Swan again (for the umpteenth time)--I love that movie! Tyrone Power as Jamie Boy He's got some great lines! Laird Cregar has got to be the best Henry Morgan ever--wonderful Welsh accent. And George Sanders is villainously delicious!
