It all makes sense, in a delightfully kinky way. The common method for conditioning a new leather Western saddle, for instance, is to soak the leg leathers in water until saturated. Then, you give the stirrups a half-twist away from the saddle and shove a broom handle through to fix the stirrups in place. When the leather dries, you can remove the broomstick, and you'll find that the stirrups now hang comfortably perpendicular to the saddle, not knee-wrenchingly parallel.
