Grace-
are ye talkin' traditional nautical tattoos,
or just anything "piratical" in nature?
Personally I don't have one, although
I've designed & Illustrated one for myself
and have just been waiting to go do it.
As far as WHERE you get them, YES they
can hurt, especially if they're done close to a bone
or say the under portion of you arm, or some
other "sensative" area!!!
I suppose a person's pain tolerence has a lot to
do with it also. For me, mine wil be what my avatar is,
my own personal ode to the POTC talking skull!

Cascabel-
I have a 62 cal. pistol made from Northstar componants,
how much would you charge to fabricate a belt hook for it?
Would you need the pistol, or would several digital
pictures work? I used to have a 72 cal pistol made from
an old Sharon barrel and it had a belt hook, it's the only
way to go, besides a bucket holster....
but then you need a horse-LOL!

The whole thing just smacks a little of of RLS to me,
and as quaint as that little verse is, I think
he probably made it up in reference to a seaman's
slang for a coffin. There may indeed be an island by
that name but I doubt it had anything to do
with the song, especially if there is mention
either of Blackbeard or buried treasure-that is just
to much a tidy little package for me.
The "15 men" might possibly be a reference to nails,
but it sounds more like RLS at work to me, from the
man that gave us the myth of buried treasure.
Interesting at any rate!

Putting in my two pence on the subject:
If you take a look through Newman's
"Weapons of the American Revolution"
you can see what Cascabel is talking about,
as far as esthetic looks between pistol models.
Also I believe that "sea service" firelocks
were sometimes laquered to help keep
rust at bay.

Virgin olive oil works well also, AKA "sweet oil"
a very 18th century period correct oil ta use!

Aye Dorian-
Good choices!
I carry a nice dutch trade knife, other wise
known as a "sheepsfoot" knife, I also have
a nice folder, which I recently gave to my
oldest son. Two of my knives were made
by Dennis Miles who made the majority
of the blades for scorsese's Gangs of New York.
Pirates carried what ever they could lay hands on,
military, or civilian. I'm sure ethnic background
and regionality also came into play here, coloring
what they may have carried.
Cheers!

There's the old weather warning...
"Red sky at night, sailors delight....
red sky in the morning sailor take warning"
I've noticed this to be true on manu occasions,
a red sky in the morning usually forshadows
some bad weather.

Capt Carroll-
As Dorian & flint stated 'tis a complicated question,
also depends how deep yer pockets are, or you want them ta be.
are you interested in doing an authentic pirate/sea dog, or maybe
something more "colorful" ala hollywood, or mabey somethin'
in between. All this will have an effect on your cost for your kit.
That and what type of weapons you want fully functional repros
or non-firing replicas, same for swords. as fer yer clothes you
can get top o' the line hand sewn coats, shirts that will start
anywhere from $120 to $150 for a shirt, or an off the rack machine
sewn shirt can run you anywhere from $40 up to 80 bucks,
then there's always patterns or goodwill/salvation army
way to go. A good coat will run you probably $250 up to $500
or more depending on what and how detailed & etc it is.
Hand sewn is always (usually) more expensive, BUT I've found
that in the long run it outlasts machine sewn as far as wear.
Firearms will run you anywear from $500 up to $1,500
for long arms, this would be a new price, used is always cheaper
pistols run anywhere from $200 up to $600, again depending
on what you want (I recently saw a repro dog lock for $635!)
swords are much the same, as far as price. Both long armes
& swords can run into the thousands if you get a custom piece.
Hats can run from $15 upto $250, boots anywhere from $250 to $1,000
depending again on factory or custom and what style, etc.
There are many fine merchants and crafts people on this list, as well
as listed on NQG merchant pages. Check them out and don't be afraid
to ask LOTS of questions and don't be to hasty to buy everything
that catches yer eye.
Hope that helped some

I've got a friend who shelaqued (sp)
his hat he does Rev war British Marines
and it'd hard as hell now. I believe he used
Roy's (Najeckie) recipet to do it.
Roy's reproductions are quality repros
and he is very knowlegable when it comes
to 18th century clothing, armes and etc.

I just got some for my birthday-
hey 40 year olds need toys too!!
a friend got me a set made by fisher price
that are skelaton pirates. They look very POTC!
now I must have the whole set. :)
They are made by Fisher/Price and come two to
a box. They have a whole ship , fort & etc that goes
with them, and they're only about 3 inches tall...
just the right size for my desk at work.
Cheers!

Just got a nice 18th century style cutlass
and am wondering about baldrics for it.
Any suggestions from you all?
I believe it's the same style as Loyalist carries,
it has a nice black leather sheath with brass throat
and tip that came with it.

Here's the web address for that hat company I was telling
you about. I've never ordered from them and am currenbtly
waiting for a price list or catalog info from them. They have many
different types & styles of hats including blanks. You might take
a look at their site. They're located in Pennsylvania. I'm not
sure of the quality of their hat, difficult to tell from the pics.
They also have a discount product page, which might be worth
checking out. www.hatcrafters.com

Lebanon? Really to me it sounded more like it was
in Marcola/Mohawk which is just a few miles east of
Springfield, lest I read my directions wrong.
I know they gave two sets of directions, but it sounded
like it was closer to the Marcola/Mohawk area outside of
Springfield. If so, i'd stay on 5 and take the springfield exit,
which'd be faster if yer askin me (I live outside of Eugene)
On another note..Anybody know what they plan on offering
as far as activities, demos, or what have you, besides
"Best Pirate Flag"? after all they want $10 bucks just to
walk in the gate .
Cheers!

Moria-
Great costume summery!!
I enjoyed the movie immesely and the costumes were
terrific, even if they covered a 20-40 year period,
as they never give a distinct year. If I had to guess I'd
say it was set in the late 1740s to early 1750s. As far as
the Redcoats, I believe they were supposed to be marines
and they would have had redcoats, though the bo'sin or who ever
he was supposed to be at the begining of the movie, the one
concerned with pirates, who later turns out to be one....his uniform
to me looked like a 1770s british naval uniform, but i could
be all awash here! All in all, a very cool movie, and Depp stole the show
as far as I was concerned, very amusing with the right amount of dash
and a bit of creepy scare. Looking forward to the next installment!

Stynky-
instead of a sombrero, you might want to try
a cavalier style or a Welsh style hat both are quite large
and have wide brims! The welsh styled hat almost looks like
a pilgrims hat. A Friend and I boughta couple to make a
Revolutionary War Tory unit Grenadier's hat, but never
finished making them. One of these days we'll finish them!!

Cronus-
that all depends on how much you want to spend,
what material, time period, etc, etc.
The choices are endless, unless you're looking for an
"off the rack" costume. There is also the thrift shop
route you can go to make your own.
Smoke & Fire company has patterns for many mens 1700's
style coats as well as coats, breeches, weskits, hats & etc
are available from many merchants like G. Gedney Godwin,
Calapooia Traders in Oregon, whop specialize in 18th century
clothing, also the Historical trekking list has a good list of
merchants as does NO QUARTER GIVEN'S list of merchants
and artists & etc. My best advice is to look around, decide
what you want, what price guidelines are and then talk to
the merchants before ordering. Good luck.
Cheers!

If yer interested in searching for a few books
on pirates, take a look at the "Capt. Twill" section
of the board, and under the caragory of "Books",
there you will find a goodly selection of suggested
reading...mostly historical in nature, sorry no fiction,
tho there is a thread somewhere on here on
"Bodice Rippers"
Also you should be able to locate a local "Crew"
in your vicinity on the NQG's Crew listings page.
BTW- Nice tat Royaliste, that must've cost ya
a few shillings!!
