<Smiles sheepishly back as she is going to find your weakness> <bows> Good day my dear Charlatan. Do remember there are mermen as well. I am not as frustrated a Captain as one would think. If my cook values his life he remembers how to make sushi with Tail. Though I am not so sure about 'yellow tail' sushi. Now.. As to the game.... I assume.... Is your question. Lead Pieces. The Shards slow down to fast due to the surface to weight ratio being too high. Tankards or Flasks.

A Pirate could be star of the next "Stoli Original" Campaign
CharityRackham replied to Henry Martin's topic in Scuttlebutt
Just a moment to drop in and pout on your behalf, hon. See you didn't win. Well.. If it comes down to it we could always raise enough pirates to rise up and... Oh.. Right.. I should make claims like this in private... A private pirate.. HA! I just noticed the emoticons has a ninja and not a pirate. Bummer.... Anywho.. Just wanted to say hi and keep in touch. It's been a long time since I've seen many of the 'Eastern half of North America' performers perform so I miss you all. If I make it back that way I'll let you know and if you make it out here you let me know. Whether it be here in BC or our wonderful partners in renfest crime in Washington State. (Or even PPF) we should hook up and talk the night away. Deal? -
Clever. And, I guess, if they hang in easy reach you can maybe 'shhhhh' sell a few on the spot. Maybe, if you really want to do more of these, you can find a vendor at a festival who could add them to their product line and they get a percentage when they sell. I know everyone is having a hard time with finances and are therefore having a tough time filling their booths. A few of BCRF's vendors are doubling up a bit or selling each others product. Maybe you can call them pirate luck charms. Something to attract the Dubloons if you carry them with you always. Later

Swords. Get more exercise and I like chasing the crew around. (oh I like this game) Mermaid or Sea Serpent? (like I don't know that answer already)

I'd love to see the pics. I have video and pics of me firing a cannon. Once I can sit still I should see if I can do a quick edit and upload. ON that note... If you are going to move your stuff elsewhere you make sure you link from here so we can all follow. I would love to see how all of these turn out. Later!

Like jendobyns, I'm with James. A number of questions to answer. You may want to check with the local gun club and see if they can recommend an 'expert' or check with the antique stores. They would usually know who to deal with. When it comes to rust, any cleaning of the rust deteriorates the metal further. You are, after all, taking a layer or two off of the metal and can simply weaken it as you clean it. If it is going to wind up on display I would recommend you go to somewhere like 'House of Knives' and ask them for a tube of 'Flitz' and a jar of 'Museum wax.' Be patient with the Flitz. It is designed to clean and is an abrasive cream but it's meant to be as gentle as possible on the surface. We use it on set a lot for both plexi and metal for these reasons. We keep a small tube of it with the swords just in case but don't use unless we HAVE TO. I've been told up here that the next time I come in there may be another product to try as the supplier is sending them less and less each time. So if you can't find it there is another version of it out there. Museum wax is a light coating that goes on the surface to keep moisture, etc. from 'settling' on the item but it is called 'museum' for a reason. It is mostly meant for things 'sitting around' not actively being used. Flitz page: http://www.flitz.com/ Museum Wax - I mostly use the Renaissance product: http://www.restorationproduct.com/mainproducts.html As for a pic. Your cell phone? Can it take a shot and maybe upload it to your Facebook, Myspace, Flickr and then post a link here? Or upload straight here from your phone?

Nice! Now where is that video, man? When a production or parade can't use black powder they use similar methods to get the item of choice fired off. When I shot canons on the island at the Port Alberni Tall Ships, oranges and lemons (for the real little guys) worked well but if just too much black powder was was put into a canon you got more Orange juice or lemonade. A good gust of wind we got nicely scented outfits. With these sorts of methods (gases and the like) you do have more control. It's also a lot easier to move the 'weapon' around as there tends to be a few less regulations involved and there are more of the same regulations from spot to spot. Brilliant and good on you AND I WANT TO SEE SOME VIDEO!! Please. If you are looking for additional options and inspiration let me quote another post from another topic here, as well.

Thank you Hurricane. And you are right. Everyone has one. I would have loved to have seen your advice in case it is needed in the future by others but I understand why you held it back. I must apoligise for my part in this. I have asked a moderator to advise me on this. IF both of us get kicked off the board then so be it. I think it would be great if you posted the advice here, so it is here for others to see and use. Gertie.. I am not handing you names. They have confided in me. It was a mistake for me to even mention it. If you want to believe what you need to in order to continue then that's cool. We all do. I will not make others the next target. But I have asked you to stop and you have not. For the sake of Beowoulf and his inquiry please stick to his most recent post he has made and let this go. Allow a full grown adult like Beowoulf make up his own mind. Thanks to all.

I can not help with the cost. My experiences are in production so they are purchased by the productions. How they know what is GEN-YOU-WHINE is also out of my range. The local police at the shoot or event would know. Prop shops hire folks who would have the licencing in place. When it comes to the licence and what your area considers appropriate is up to the local police (not always the RCMP - when it comes to Quebec). If you are shooting (no projectiles) here in BC at an event, show or production and are using black powder, then you are required to have a fireworks demonstration license as it is considered a presentation weapon in a public place. There are a few exceptions but they are area based and, once more, only your 'local' can help with that. If you PM me your actual area I will go down the chart of 'local union reps' and you can contact them as ask if they are aware of variations or production permits that could allow you to do what you need to. When firing in other provinces and/or States it will be based on the final location NOT where you are coming from. Make sure you check with the local law before agreeing to or obligating to bringing and/or firing your weapons. In order to decrease paperwork, we have chosen to use fairly accurate looking (cheaper and in cost range as well) replicas with caps as they make a 'Bang' which is acceptable at events and such, and easier on the legals. Seeing what goes on with a larger production... It made sense to US. It may not work for you but the black powder/fireworks license may apply to you where you are. When crossing the border with ANY THING that is considered a weapon it must not be in reach of any passenger or driver so that the police are never nervous if they have to look in your vehicle or talk to you in person. Anything that has a registration must have a copy of the registration/permit with the weapon. It is recommended that you carry a second copy in your luggage. If you go into a police station and talk it out with the law closest to you, you will get a better result then reading the webpages. We do all the time. You can even get a different result from officer to officer... Again... That has happened to me... But at least you know what is expected there. Looks like jendobvns knows a group that has it figured out and they are physically closer than others here. I highly recommend you connect with her folks. I have posted elsewhere on this board a list of Canadian pirate events. If you would like, check out my content on my profile and I think it was in the landlocked or something similar... If I can free up some spare time I'd be happy to look for it but a good start would be the piratefest in Milton Ontario as many of their group have been doing this sort of thing for quite some time and are nearer to you then we are. Also check with the closest historical site. If anyone would know, they would. That's the basics of what I can give you.

Whoa. I really don't get your anger towards me. Honestly. The only person who can decide what they want out of the info given is the person who started this conversation. I have discussed black powder. I have discussed the different kinds of licencing that isn't listed in the standard gun info available easily on the net and attempted to show him a number of options. I have plenty of experience with the subject and various weapons. I did answer your questions but that never seems to make you happy. I read the postings already here and added based on the replies already given as well the pattern of questions and discussions here in this subject. I know where he can probably find folks in Quebec who can possibly help him find what he needs. Up to HIM if he follows or asks for that. Martin is full union so we have access to databases of people who use black powder and weapons for production. So what if it is production. Discussions from others seemed to indicate that this discussion could go that way as production seem to know how to handle this. I have NOT received anything from Beowoulf stating to stop. I see HIS ID at the top of this particular discussion not you. I have been told by many that you seem to be on the attack when it comes to me. Folks have informed me that you have insulted me and my crew members for anything you can make up, find or exaggerate. I have continued to take deep breaths and continue on. I Have never slagged you, insulted you or attacked you. I have shown discomfort and done my best to give you space, but when you seem to be following me and taking whatever opening you can to do this... It's tough to give you space and let you just be. Now that folks are sending me emails giving me sympathy for your existence, it just gets harder. We don't need this energy in public and the fact that folks are contacting me with sympathy concerns me. It means it is in public. So please. I ask again... Please post your replies and I will post mine and those who are here for advice will take form the post what they will. They are not our children nor are we responsible for them. If you want to get angry at me, send me a message and get angry at me. Not drag it out to them. I've already asked that of you and you won't. I am sorry Beowoulf, that this is happening on your post. In all honesty, if you would like to tell me to bugger off or would like to contact me directly, then I am still open to that. Thank you to everyone for your patience on this. I can only hope that this settles down soon.

First off.. Yes.. I have had to deal with such things and not for BCRF but back in Ontario and on productions throughout North America. Hell.. Before moving from Toronto to Vancouver I had to give up my guns. Just didn't want to deal with the changes in paperwork. One had seized anyway. I deal with and have dealt with plenty of types of weapons and if you look at the laws regarding such things you will see similarities as well as differences between the way the law looks at weapons as a whole. Flintlocks? Yes. Flat pans? Yes. Canons? Yes. Riffles? Yes. (worked with, taken apart, shot and put back together). All a number of years ago and on and off in production for the last 85% of my 33 year career.... But... yes... Even recently I've been working with three different groups here in BC who handle such things as black powder on a hobby and professional level with relationships developing for use of such weapons here for production, parades, events and the like so... Yes. I've actually learned even more than I already knew from these wonderful people. Me personally bringing back and forth over the border such things as flintlocks? Nope. Done the paperwork for it? Yes. Is the replica cap guns considered under the same laws of going back and forth over the border? Yes. By law they are considered weapons and must be handled in a legal manner. Not only because of the way they look but also because there is powder in the caps and that can trigger the scent dogs. Mentions of such things you say this is not about? Hmm... See jendobyns. I see no snapping at that one. Just at me. Reference to replicas in your own post and compliment to James... See above.. Conflicts with your disgust that I mention replicas. I honestly don't get it. Cross bows as reference and dealing with? Yes. Reasons I don't bother to have one. Subject relationship? To me.. Plenty. Weapons are handled differently yet seem to have similar rules, in some cases, and some places.. To me that leaves a person more educated and has a greater chance of learning the language of whomever the local law is. Actual relationship to this post? Something only Beowoulf can decide. Not us. Registration and ownership has a ton to do with use and source. From personal experience? Yes. Oh. Gun competition and flintlocks in Aldergrove?... Yes... And many other types of guns and weapons. It was a historical gun shot competition. It ran two years. One year - Wild West shoot out. Second year - History of weapons and use. Did I attend? No. Had a production (1 year here and 1 year in the US) to take care of. Is this unnecessary? Yes. The whole point of people asking questions on a public form is to get as many opinions as they can in order to make an educated decision. IF they doubt someone, question someone, don't like someone, love someone, blindly trust someone or simply want to try it all... Their choice. Not ours. You have not given bad advice, nor have I (and neither one of us has said anything drasticly different then anyone else on here) so this is really not worth it. I am sure if Beowoulf wants to tell me to bugger off he will or he will be polite and just ignore me (or anyone else) and use the form like it is designed to be used.. Take what you need and get on with your life as you thank those who posted (all) and decide who you'd like to PM in order to chat with. I've said it before.. No biggie. Don't get why it is one to you.

Oh. Sounds lovely. I would LOVE to see how your style differs from others. Once I am back on my other machine (one with the email addresses set up and the rest of the pics) I'll drop you an email. Sound good? Thank you for even offering this.

I do like them and bravo. It is rare that a man has such a 'lovely creative eye' so there is only one piece of advice. When I began to put things in my hair I discovered one tragic thing. While moving a lot (dancing, sword fighting, etc) the longer ones and/or the ones with much heavier things only on the ends, hit you in the face. So I did redesign a bit so that decreased the chances. Heavier ones are shorter and longer ones are lighter. I get smacked less now.

And it's reputation is well deserved! I've been a regular OKRF visitor for many a year now! YAY!! I don't know if Red McWilliams is headed back that way in 2011 but if he does just say hi. He was just up here with his wife on a visit and he always has such great things to say about OKRF. He comes up here to BC to do our renfest as well and is an incredible supporter of ours and a wonderful performer. The whole cast and crew just love listening to his stories. From what he says you are a lucky man to have that one in reach. Bravo. May we meet in person some day.

BTW. There's nothing wrong with ANY of the information given here by anyone. Being in a society of interpretation and having to deal with that on many levels in getting permits and permissions for a number of things, the more advice given and gotten, the better. I've dealt with police all over the US and Canada and it is never the same no matter where you are. I am just hoping that there is a enough info that a great decision can be made that suits his needs. On that note: jendobyns. I re-read your post. Sounds like your friends are along the same line as the Seafair pirates. Might be a good move to connect Beowoulf with them. If they are doing this nice and smooth in Niagara, and the Seattle boys are doing it nice and smooth out here, you may have hit on a source for a constant. I also doublechecked our paperwork in the files, on presentations and productions. Bringing weapons, into BC, to use for competition, demonstration, and/or production, must comply to appropriate shipping laws and used only at or for the purpose approved for. If the weapon is traveling it can not travel with any accessories that makes the weapon able to fire. All items of this nature must travel separately. (there is note of a see chart but I don't seem to have the chart. Might be at the shop) Anything that constitutes a weapon must travel out of reach of the driver and any passengers and must be packed so that it is not easily accessible. Black powder is illegal for possession in BC but can be acquired and used in the province of British Columbia with a fireworks license. (again a note is made for another sheet - Looks like this copy dates back a few years so I may have tossed the additional papers with plans to replace them but haven't yet) The device can only be used for any explosive effect or use and, if required, can only be used with a projectile with the appropriate licensing. Projectiles can include, shot, balls, metal objects, wads, wood, glass and must be appropriate to the weapon or effects item used. There's a whole book on this. Don't have it but I know it's at the shop and provided by the union. Sounds like both of these groups figured it out. I know Seattle brings their powder with them and technically, according to this, that's not permitted. Could be the RCMP pre licence thing... But they did it... Good on them. Ok. Have to go to bed. Tomorrow we should find out whether or not the shop is moving and I should readjust my schedule back to normal... ish... Later! Hope that helps.

Ummm.. Ok? I used bladed weapons as a comparison between Ontario and BC laws. I am aware of the fact that they are not guns. With those variations you never know what other variations there may be until you talk to the right people. That's all. I doublechecked back to Beowoulf's original post and I see no mention of whether or not they would be used in an entertainment capacity and since we have all recently helped a member of the pub out on a birthday party plan when he isn't a birthday party planner in the first place, anything is possible. Hence the request for clarification. Who knows. One day a family member may show up and request Beowoulf do something funky at their wedding. Black powder 'pan' weapons only require the appropriate presentation fireworks permit. Depending on the weapon it does usually require all the paperwork but it is fireable. All of this is available to anyone (entertainment industry or not) but falls under entertainment and show/production paperwork. Even reenactment groups have to go through it.. I've seen the paperwork for reenactment groups here and in Ontario. If they present anywhere there is a serious of 'things' they go through. And it is different from spot to spot... So.. Yeah.. You want to fire it you may have to go through an entertainment path. No biggie. And re the inquiries of Loyalist Arms. Like Crossbows (yes I know that is a piece of archery equipment not black powder), weapons of this type (black powder) can be sold in Canada (with the right business registration) but still requires certain legal hoops in order to 'use' or 'display'. It is up to the purchaser to make sure all of that is in order. There is a reason Fort York had to cement up some of their cannons even though they were not the ones purchased to fire. I use crossbows as an example as some provinces have it declared as a concealable weapon as many of them can break down and be placed in a coat/bag/etc. In those provinces you can only shoot on a gun rang even though you technically own a bow. Now.. In BC there is a loop hole for bows. If you are on 'your' private property and pointed towards your house you may fire it legally. There is no stipulation for crossbows in this loophole yet in BC you can not bring a crossbow to the archery rang and fire it legally. Your BC Archery Association membership states that they will not cover you on the insurance if you do so as you are breaking the law. BUT you can't stand in front of your house and fire a gun towards it. Hmmmm... This exists all across this country. The ups and downs. So the only way to do this is make sure you have all possible routes covered and you consider all avenues and then pick the one that suits you. I have worked with many on set/stage/public gigs who forget that a weapon (loaded or not, sheathed or not) is still a weapon. I for one am happy that these laws exist. I'm unhappy that so many of these folks have made it tough for us, but it is set up that if anything stupid happens, we are covered and since, practically every day Martin and/or I are around weapons of many types... Being covered is good. And... If you look at the gun competitions that happen in Canada, not on a gun range (Aldergrove Fairdays 2008/2009 for example - held in a public park), there are a number of ways to shoot other then a gun range. Hell... The gun freedoms are greater in Abottsford then they are in Vancouver for obvious reasons. Population and property. But you can do it.. You just have to prove to them that you are responsible and are willing to jump through hoops they feel are necessary. When we deal with replicas we follow all the rules, all events know what is on our costumes and we check ahead as to what is permitted under their insurance. Did that back at Fort York in Toronto and did that here at Fort Langley. We may use replica 'cap guns' for our public stuff but we still have to pre show up and pre fire them in the space (volume is the big concern and that the guns are safe) and let the site (or insurance company) inspect them. DId that just a few weeks ago for a gig in February. We still have to use the right caps and keep the guns safe with straps over the gun so it can't be pulled from the holster easily but hey.... These suckers are loud and can cause damage is misused so we have to do what we have to do. We also have to show 'training' with the cast. The post seriously was only intended as an encouragement to get advice from those affected the most. Those who hold the laws in that area. Hey.. Here's another idea. Bring a few pictures to the station and ask them if these count. Tell them the photos are of ones on the internet (or wherever) and see what they do. If their eyes go real big, smile politely and say 'Just thinking of getting back into reenacting. Have you had a bad experience with these? Tell me about it..' Lean over the counter, bat your eyes, and see what happens... Actually.. If it is a guy you may want to leave the eye batting out... Just a thought... If you need me, you can just PM me. If you have Skype all the better. We can chat. Oh.. AND... Welcome to Canada. It's not as bad as we make it out to be. It's just a little passive. And we're sorry. We don't mean to. Honest.

Okay honey... Here we go. The laws, when applied to firearms (replica and other wise) in Canada vary from province to province, township to township, entertainment to collector to 'user'. There are a number of variations depending on your goals and you local officers. The info copied and pasted above is what is on the webpage for the public eye but there are a number of 'sub laws' that govern use and location. For us in the film industry all guns that come into the prop shop MUST have a weapons expert (certificate acquired after a gun handling course and a presentation fireworks course) present or they MUST be locked up. The courses are cheap and as a group, even cheaper. If you are interested in that route I'd have to know where you live. Feel free to PM if you need to. First gap I get, I'll see who the local is to you. We have replicas we use for shows and presentations. They were purchased in the States and have been back and forth many times. They use very loud caps and the caps must be a colour visible from a distance. No one seems to mind. They go 'bang' and as long as we are using them where we are hired to do so, all is fine. But again.. That is dependent on your location. Back in Ontario, while I was working with Paramount, our 'weapons' (swords, batleths, etc.) were not considered weapons unless we drew them. Here in BC they are considered weapons if you swing them. Like Cascabel points out... Laws are not made with much actual knowledge and can be open to interpretation. Canons as a general state do fall under more relaxed laws except for.... Yeah... I know... Except for.. Not words you want to hear.... Except for where someone decides they don't. Some officers will use this little sub law that exists that remarks on the length of the barrel and the width of the barrel and whether or not it is display only in public (cement that baby) or to be fired. Also there are bits about if you have been military in the past or.... You can get the whole book for from the government on this but it will still be open to interpretation. For example: The Seattle Seafair Pirates hold a license from the RCMP which gives them permission to bring 'The Duck' over the border and fire their canons in parades, etc, as long as the parade has the insurance covered. There is also another group here who has permission to fire cannons and guns (with blanks rated for public) under certain conditions as their membership is mostly ex military... Etc and so on... So... Step one: Decide what you really need to own right down to what you'd like to own. Step two: Decide what you are planning to do with it. Step three: Walk into your local police station/ city hall and have a lovely chat, pick up some suggested paper, bring it home and, if necessary, re decide the above steps. Step four: If you liked the person who handled you make sure you get their card as you want to return to them for any necessary permits IF necessary. If you don't like that person see if you can go to another location or get a different person. Once you have the right words, remember them, write them down, note who said them, and hang onto it. Misc and optional step: PM me if you plan on using them for entertainment purposes. Next chance I get I'll go by the shop and see if we have as direct a name as we can get for you, based on where you are. But really. Don't hate the country. We're trying our best to (snicker) keep peace (snort) amongst the population. Really. But I have never had a weapons issue in the 33 years I have been in this business and much is pretty messed up so as long as you have documentation and follow whatever law you need to follow, then it's cool. Later and smile, Darn IT!!

I know it isn't Pirate per say, but many renfests do pirate shows and themed events/weekends... http://www.okcastle.com/ Of all the renfests on the circuit this one has one of the best reputations. One of our stage performers has done this one in the past and he says they are GREAT!!

Missed it live but thanks for the posting. I'll download it from my iTunes podcasts and give it a listen when I get the chance. I'm looking forward to it.
