  1. One country's privateer is another country's pirate ;-}

..........And one man's pirate is another man's hero...

I agree with Iron Hand too.

Anti heroes are so much more fun then the not so anti heroes...

What makes a pirate is, asking who the hell let the Navy boy in? And letting the other brethren know that he is on board so we can keel haul immediately.

Maybe he has friends amongst our community?!

Now, now... There are a few of them on here. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer...

Besides... Most pirates come from disgruntled Naval crew. It is only a matter of time, dear sir. Only a matter of time. B)

  2. Nice!! I especially like the hat!!!

Can you (or anyone!)talk my wife into getting into history or pirating??

Well.. Does she already like something that can have a historical or pirate twist to it?

    OR...

There's this Netflix ad where this hot guy with a foreign accent is in a cell and... The 'today' woman comes up to him and says "Hello there. Sooo... it's girls night, so we gotta go. Oh wait, you have a strip scene right". He starts to talk but she cuts him off saying "no no no, don't speak, show" At the end you see her and her friends rewinding the video to watch him walk out of water, over and over.. Glistening in the sun....

The key lines to this is when she not only when she calls him a 'biscuit' but also when she sighed "This could turn me into a history buff." Find it. Get a copy of it. Play it over and over again.

    ;)

Key thing to do is to show her that you have just as much interest in what she does and find ways to combine it all.

Good luck and plenty of fun.

  3. I have 2 hat blanks at home, one brown, one black....and I have the brown one earmarked for a new cocked hat....any tips?

Do you have a few pics of the blanks? I just let myself go and see what comes of it. Sometimes the crew and cast joke about not letting me near their hats considering all the things I have done with mine.

The only advice I would give to anyone using felt blanks would be:

When you stitch any part 'up' or 'to' and it may put some tug or pull on it, put a piece of stiff fabric inside so that the stitch has less of a 'bite' or wear on it and shorten the lifespan.

OH! And - If it gets wet, don't crush it or anything. Felt develops a memory when wet.

  4. are there truly no takers on this?

You're asking to pick between two talented 'folks' of the pirate persuasion. That's not fair mate.

    Hmmm.... Ahhhh.. See... ;)

Both. May I say both? If I can say both for the main reason there is talent in them bones, then consider it answered.... ;)

Now for a question.. Ummm... Where's Chrispy when I need him?

    OK!!! That wasn't the question...

Pirate stage show or Pirate movie?

  5. A laid off English sailor who needs some $$

BRILLIANT!!! When this came into my phone notice I laughed.

the bane of my existence........ or is that just one female pirate. You know who you are Captain

    Who? Little ol' me?

You are a good man, Norfolk. I look forward to converting.. I mean conversing, with you.

Welcome to the pub. When you mentioned that you were looking for 'Navy' and 'seafaring' info I am happy that you followed up with the suggestion of coming here. I'm also happy to see you cruising through the subjects. May I also suggest you intro yourself (in this thread but a new subject) to the group? It might help you find the like minded individuals with the info you are looking for... Or keep cruising. Either way, good to see you here.

    Later!!

  6. Port Port = Left... four letters each... easier to remember. ^_^ ^_^

    Sand Bar or Raw Bar

..........Starboard is usually reserved for Officers........never been one

    Scooner or ketch

So which one do I answer...

I wanted to answer Port because it is tasty... Wrong port? Bugger.

    ^_^

So... How about.. Sand Bar as Raw bars have shellfish and you don't want to see what happens if I eat shellfish.

AND Schooner - Fast, sexy and well worth the pride and joy of owning one.

Let's see... I've been away too long...

    Saber or boarding dagger?

  7. Special thank you Duchess. I agree with Wes... This was fun and I too am already planning for this year.

Jaded - Oh you sweet woman. I've already used the shell in my 'Charity props' and am thinking of other times to use it as well. I wore the little dragon fly necklace at New Year's Eve and it got some lovely compliments. I can't wait to see what you are sending. I will make sure to post it here when it does come. I sent you a thank you and it came back undelivered. I don't know if I read your address wrong or not but could you please send me your address via PM? I'd like to try and send it again.

Now Duchess.. I'd love for everyone to know how wonderful this turned out for me this year. Hubby and I are soooo strapped tight on the cash (They also canceled SGU - our primary income so we are working hard for the next gig before running completely out of money - the life of an artist) and Christmas was going to look bleak but this one little extra bit has turned into a lovely experience that assisted in making me feel richer. The topper on this was today when I received a little envelope in the mail....

Elena. I want folks to know how lovely you are. Elena has a tradition in her country. She sent me links on it:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C4%83r%C5%A3i%C5%9For

    http://www.moldova.org/page/martisor-a-beautiful-tradition-in-moldova-and-romania-59-eng.html

I received in the mail the tiniest of sail ship (In sterling silver), crossed anchors (her notes say it means faith, hope and love) and a bracelet. The two little amulets have the red and white strings tied to them and the bracelet is red and white as well. It is all for luck and best wishes so I am at present, trying to figure out how to include the little ship on my Charity outfit. I have considered adding it to a braid but I'm afraid it might get damaged. It is so tiny. I'll figure it out.

Thank you Elena for knowing that I need a smile and some good luck. We are going to have to work soooo much harder this year to fix the damage done by others to the BC Renfest and the Jade Dragon Crew, and even the smallest of happy thoughts, best wishes and a little love can go such a long way.

This experience was well worth everything we put into it and I don't know about the rest of you, but I feel soooo much better having done this. Next year it'd be incredible to get more folks involved.

    Later.

    Yours in time and adventure.

  8. OH! Off the path for a minute please:

Red should be mandatory for all female Captains, So everyone knows when to run. snicker

But that takes the fun out of it. You shouldn't be able to see us coming... Unless you're scared.;)

and thanks Charity if that be the situation and I only could hope for Cannibal's strong gust ;)

    You are welcome.

    Zingara -

Lady I doff my hat to you and exclaim... Touche! ;)

    Ishmael or Queequeg

Ditto... Probably in a different way but Ditto none the less.

And I am so bummed I missed this one. I would have picked Ishmael as he is more insane then I.

    Makes me look sane.

  9. ahaha pirate chest 1 ;) I'm not a pirate but I keep the pay you guys can share the chest 2 ;)

now what's fair is fair this is for the wenches here

Pirate Captain or Royal Navy Captain?

    Royal Navy Captain!!

You can... Umm.. Mold them. More often then not they are bitter inside and waiting for someone to show them why.

    ;)

    Sorry Chrispy.

Letter of Marque or Warrant for your arrest?

  10. I am looking forward to the next Devil's Dozen.

If I remember the last one stipulated that the final choices had to show at Fell's Point so I don't think it matters where the submissions come from. I think it would be GREAT to see a multicultural Devil's Dozen as most pirate ships were multicultural.

With the encouragement and support from my crew and friends, apparently I must be nominated..

    ;)

I know I have a sword but they have swords too and they outnumber me. And I'm only Captain. They could oust me so.... I know Canada is not across the pond (And I'm not French Canadian- Just 'boring' ol' Canadian) but we are another country. If we can pull a nomination together I think it would be wonderful to see European (English, Irish, Scottish, Spanish, etc...) submissions, Asian submissions, etc..... A plethera of accents in one room. And half of them 'REAL'. That'd be wild.

Hey.. Has anyone thought of doing a fundraiser for plane or hotel for the final group? Maybe a donation button (Minimum $1 or something) on the voting page? If not help them get there and stay, maybe enough for a dinner as a group. Help folks (especially over seas or other countries) get to the final pick. Maybe a sponsorship of airfare or hotel from the companies (hotels and airlines) in trade for an ad or place for their banner (webpage?). Tourism in BC supports but isn't really in a position to financially contribute to events and such but what is the tourism department near by the event like? If you tell them in the final vote, there is a good chance someone is coming in from another country and they may convince folks to come with or advertise this local event in other countries, they may just chirp up.

I'd really like to see this succeed. I think it is a wonderful idea and a great moral building project for a broad range of folks interested in pirates on sooo many levels. It's also a great way to support the entertaining and/or educational in this reality and world we have created.

So there.. My ideas and what is sitting in my little head right now.

    Thanks for the moment.

  11. Thanks you lot for the thoughts.

It really puts it all in perspective when you think of this man and his 'group' starting something so grand as a renfest (and establishing a format many of us still follow) and they pass away one by one.. Leaving behind something that, in so many ways, is timeless. Something that makes so many people feel young again and drives forward others to create and grow.

    Sigh

I've had my moment and thank you all for being part of it. I can only hope that I have the strength that he had and I can continue on.

    Thanks.

  12. It's scary when something like a stinkpot can't affect you because the smell is too familiar. Maybe we should put skunks in the cannons. Hmmm....

Figure head or straight forward bowsprit

love the idea I will supply the skunks .

    Hydrogen Sulfide or Skunks :D

So... Now that we have decided that Skunks work.. Who is bringing the skunks? Who is providing the cannons? Where are we firing them from and... Who are we firing them at?

Government buildings, Politicians, Bad Neighbours house, and --- in laws are all acceptable answers. :D

rats always can bb-q them in case of emergency.

    rock or the hard place?

And Chrispy. Since you 'Figure Head' (I actually didn't see that one coming - Bravo) this answer is just for you Chrispy.

    Hard place

Don't think I need to add to that. ;)

    Myth or Legend

  13. Your gift was wonderful and I'll cherish it!

I received a wooden treasure chest, full with gems, pieces of eight and dubloons... there was a curious's skull there too... and underneath, hidden well, like the precious navigation tools should be... a nocturnal!:D Something I never thought I might get! It is to be worn as a necklace, but I am afraid to wear it not to lose it!

Please read Marina's first three phrases here in order to know that I was aware it existed... and I wrote about it.

    You are very welcome.

Due to its small size it isn't as accurate as the bigger full size ones but it works all right. The company that makes them does some incredible little history pieces and when I saw that one I fell in love with it. I think they might actually be sold out now (They had a small batch of them left) but I bought one for you, and I must confess, one for myself. I'm considering putting it on a little chain and wearing it with Charity. I'll probably tuck it inside my shirt so that it is safe but pull it out when we are somewhere different and work with using it.

Actually.. If I may... Since you live somewhere else on this great planet (somewhere other then where most of us are) it might be cool to move this talk to another place on the form (any suggestions folks) and we can actually see how well such a small version of these work in different places.

    How's that sound?

Gotta dash. Tons to get done. Happy I did right by you. Happy it got to you.

  14. A moment of silence, if you will.

Ron Patterson, creator of the beloved Renaissance Faire, passed away on Jan. 14, 2011 at 80.

This man was one of the few who were left from the original group that began the very format I (and others) use for the renfest or renfaire. He is the one who kept it alive. He's an incredible man and a moment of prayer and best wishes to his children (who continue to keep his company alive) would be appreciated.

for more you can read the article on him here:

    http://sanrafael.patch.com/articles/creator-of-renaissance-faire-dies-at-80

    Thank you.

  15. There's no need for that. Some years it goes well other times it doesn't. Some people won't be allowed to play next time. No worries I say.

Then I shall not worry. I've done some of this kind of thing in the past and it's always a bummer to get stuck with someone else's inability to follow through or their inability to let you know that they can't. I hate seeing it happen to another.

    Thanks for the offer though!

    You are very welcome.

  16. STINKPOTS.

After you spend some time with my crew you'll understand.

It's scary when something like a stinkpot can't affect you because the smell is too familiar. Maybe we should put skunks in the cannons. Hmmm....

Figure head or straight forward bowsprit

  17. Glad ye came to th' Pub, Tiny. Tis no better place ye could venture upon. Many here I'm sure could offer many answers.

    Tis a general, wide-ranged question.

Could be hope, want, or desire for something better, the call of adventure, our own point of view, replicate what we saw from a movie or tv show, The joy of impersonating history to teach and learn, the mystery of something found that was once lost...

It's a large number of possibilities, all with so many different answers from every single person. :)

    ~Lady B

I do like your reply, my dear. Partially for what it says and partially as it puts it in the present as well as a past.

I'd like to add: an understanding of your Brethren, your location and your surroundings, as it is a community. Like any cultural based group and history/fantasy/fiction focused interest, it has to exist inside a larger scope of life. Being a pirate and presenting a pirate are two different things. If you are being then you would have to ask a modern day pirate. If you are presenting then it is up to the ones you are presenting to and to those you trust your presentation with. So.. For me.

What is above is wonderful (Thank you Lady B- Such grace) but add.... Being a pirate is finding the correct audience and the correct combination of images, in order to educate, inspire and motivate those around you, no matter what age. And on top of that.. Being a crew is giving the impression that your don't always get along (so that kids can learn that people don't always get along and so adults can relate) but somehow you work it out in the end. THEN applying that to the real life you co-exist in. And since piracy is based in democracy, this would make sense. Break the rules, over you go. Work it out, stay on board. Good lesson to teach kids.

I suppose I can't stop thinking like an actor/performer. I've been doing this for a very long time.

Still enjoying it and still making it work so I guess it's all right.
