  1. While not a piratical movie one of the most fun fencing scenes I have ever watched was the fight between Danny Kaye and Basil Rathbone in the Court Jester. danny Kaye is bewitched and every time someone snaps their finger he changes from a great swordsman to a bumble and back again I loved it
  2. every one seems to think that a (common) pirate would not get his hands on some expensive or exotic weapon but what about the articles that state that thefirst man aboard a prize could get his choice of small arms from said prize. The pirate may or may not sell it but he could come into possesion of a jewel encrusted sword or gun
  3. I shall be looking forward to seeing them thanks

  10. While DB is correct about the distance between the knots if you wish tomake use of the chip log with modern chart if you want a historically correct instrument tjhe distance was actually seven fathoms or 42 feet. and there are traditional markings every so many knots for more info see the book latitude hooks and azmith ringsnad there are several web sights that relatethe building of navigation instruments.
  11. Hey guys and girls while some of thecomplaints about the public have some merit don't give up just yet. At the pirate festin St. louis I set up a display of celestial navigation and weapons for the public. It is not a small controlled event and not billed as a historic only event. I have had people young and old come back and pay another entry fee to bring their friends back to listen to my talk and ask questions. While some of these people are as you say walk and view many are spending as much as half an hour asking questions and listening to the answers. After thirty one years doing living history I have seen a lot. But please do not count the youth of today out yet. I have seen them transfixed and learning about everything from a mariners astrolabe to a chip log, and a traverse boaRD TO A STAR CLOCK. i HAVE FOR THE PAST TWO WEEKENDS HAD A HUGE CROWD AROUND MY DISPLAY AND IF THE FEEDBACK FROM EVERYONE IS RIGHT MY DISPLAy has been talked about by more people tha the belly dancers and the other acts. We all have bad times with people but don't give up on them yet. Beeee encouraged and they will too

  17. Okay nguys I don't know where you got the idea that 3F was a priming powder it is not it is for small bore guns ie queen anne. also it burns considerably cleaner than 2f which is musket powder and with blanks is very dirty. I have been shooting live fire and blanks and hunting with black powder for 31 years. Heres the kicker othe than 1F you can use whatever powder you want for your blanks. I use 3F beacuse you don't need a seperate primer, but most places want you to prime after loading which would require a priming horn of some kind. Muskets will use either 2 or 3 f powder and work equally well just shoot what you practice with.

  20. hey sorry if this thing got a little crazy but I have delt with these people here in St. Louis on probabably 30 differant times and they have not been reasonable or cooperative on any of the occasions. I understand the politics but we should not allow ineptitude to be the excuse for bad conduct. Nor should we allow a lack of time for preparation to be a reason either. My use of the C word stems more from the fact that once again we created a group that makes rules and does not answer to the people. We have no say in their rules or policyies and the people in charge are not held responsible to anyone outside thier organization. After asking a group I belong to to do a program for them the NPS people made us pay 300.00 to have their expert to come in and check to see if our guns were empty. that's disrespectful. Also if as was said this space should be reserved for reflection and thought why are they disposing of our churches at such an alarming rate to people such as foriegn concerns that care nothing for our country this is what got my dander up, not just feelings hurt.
  21. Manny Bottles I should like to address your comment when a very few decide for the many what is good for someone or something belonging to the many that is very much a communist state, and that is what they are doing. As to their ethical protection I say they are lying hippocrates. I am from St. louis Mo. and the Arch grounds are a national park area. Every year the fourth of July they have a festival on the arch grounds and these people who clame to protect these parks allow thousands and even sometimes millions of dollars worth of damage to be done, compared to very small amount of damage that is done by reenactors. As far as our group using other land while we do what gives them the right to tell us that we cannot use our land because they don't like how we play. Also claiming that we disrespect the memory of those who fought and died is also a load of crap. Many of these very same people that they condemn, including my self have served this country as members of the armed forces and have lost our friends and family to the horrors of war. I do history as much to educate as to have fum and have seen the interest sparked by the things we do
  22. Michael is definitely right if you missed this it was your bad luck. The site is great and Nathen and the other people who helped made this a great and enjoyable time. can't wait for next year. Thanks to all who helped make this a goodtime
  23. Perhaps it is time that we teach these communist dictators that these arte our parks and not theirs. And perhaps the best way is to dry up their source of qualified people to put on their stupoid demonstrations and protest them in any way possible. We relieve them of the resources for their programs and thus reduce thier visitors by not giving them anything to see. I have expirenced these stupid people for many years in conjunction with the arch ground and now it appears they are out to discredit the very people who help provde their programs
