PS. Because I just read Matt's post "There will 100% be an Official meeting at Fells Point". There Officially CAN NOT be an Official meeting there if we (the "Members" ) have not voted on there being an Official meeting. I don't think that most of us will be in attendance. Therefore no motions put forward would be able to be passed. So you simply cannot say that there will be an Official Meeting. Who decided that there would be an "Official" meeting? We didn't. Sorry. My apologies for taking so long to get back to Pyracy pub. It has been a very busy year. I have spoken with Clay several times since last years event and here are my 2 doubloons for what they are worth as a voting member of the Order: No Inductees this year. It is not fair to do this without following the form of the first election. Candidates must be nominated, announced publicly and voted on. To come up with inductees at the last minute is unfair to the rest of our brethren who will feel that they were unaware of the process, and cheated out of campaigning. Induction process every TWO years. This keeps the numbers lower, gives people more time to think about who to nominate, makes the membership more special, gives us (The Order) more time to plan a better ceremony etc.. for 2012. People will NOT lose interest in the Order and think it was a one time thing IF we keep the public informed, (through Pirates Mag. and Social Media) as to what we are doing and what the process is. Rings. Clay and I talked about this at length. Yes New Inductees should absolutely get rings, they should be presented by the existing Order, at the ceremony. Cost...a fund raiser could be undertaken to raise the money for the rings. I suggested a special T shirt for supporters of the Order of Leviathan. A shirt that the public, husbands, wives, friends, crews etc... can purchase for $20. w/ the Order's Logo on it, but it would state( in some fashion) that they are a supporter of ( and imply that they ARE NOT a member of). We would do a Member's only and different T shirt for those of us in the order ( with sizes that actually fit all of us). Having the year buffer (2011) will give us the time to design, market and collect the funds needed to have the rings made. I personally will not be at Fell's Point this year. I know that a majority of the Order will not be, and so it does not make sense to have an Official function there, just for the sake of having one, with a few members. Doing something unofficial, Hell Yes, have a great time, tear up the town, and present yourselves as member's of the Order, you do after all wear the ring proudly. Gamble for swords, roll the dice, promote yourselves and your personal businesses, But induct new people for the sake of inducting someone? My advice is "No". As for "Pirate of the Year", that is a seperate, but "tied" issue. To my understanding it is chosen by "Pirates Mag", and can be presented as such by Pirates Magazine. Last year we (The Devil's Dozen) were told that WE would elect, from within our own ranks, "The Pirate King". That did not happen. Somehow "Pirate King" disappeared and "Pirate of the Year" took it's place at the ceremony. Then again, originally The Devil's Dozen were also called "Pirate Lords" until, some people decided to take issue with the title, and then we became "13, er 14 people who are outstanding members of the pirate community as voted upon by our peers" ( sounds really Piratey doesn't it?). I feel that we can call ourselves Pirate Lords, and I continue to do so. I think we ( order of leviathan) should decide whether or not we want a seperate "Pirate King" that comes from within our ranks, or if we are fine with a "Pirate of the Year" who can come from anywhere, chosen by the mag. I believe that it was Clay's intent, to get this "Order of Leviathan" started the first year, and that after that we would need to start governing ourselves through our members. We agreed to this when accepting the induction into the order....That's what we were told. Though again, we should have a codex drawn up that we all sign, that explains how we will do these things. how we will operate. what our purpose is.I agree that we need to have meetings, maybe 2-4 a year and possibly through a conference call. Organizations do it all the time, I don't see why we can't. But we need to start working on this NOW, and get ready for 2012, as 2011 is already upon us and Fells Point is little more than a month away. Ok, I know I said a lot, and yet probably not enough. LOL I need to get back to work. I look forward to your comments. Anyone needing to get ahold of me, it is much quicker through facebook, and I encourage you to start using the Order of Leviathan Facebook page. In case you are unaware, we have over 1300 supporters of that page and our ORDER. -Jeff MacKay

And I agree, no dice rolling. Totally unneccessary. If it looks like a pirate is gonna be voted in by a landslide... then so be it. They deserve it, and damn how it looks to outsiders.

I ask again... what are yer thoughts mates...Since the inaugeral (spelling) year will be past, are members of Pirates Magazine still off limits or are they able to be nominated now? Surely, the 2nd annual competition will not be accused of being "rigged" if members of the mag were nominated.. It seams that some one would probably name Bilgemunky, as well as Matt Stagmer, if allowed. Ok and send the nominations into Pirates Magazine but, when Is the official date that we need to have our nomination in?

Jib, You can see the current members of the Order of Leviathan by going to their Facebook Page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Order-of-Leviathan

Aye, I believe that it is a fair report of a wonderful event. Filled with lots of excitement, and a bit of confusion. I look forward to the 2011 ceremony!

Ahoy Cap'n Bob, I admire your desire to do it yourself. For next time, you may want a foul weather proof hat, you can get an authentic, handcrafted, Oilwaxed one at Captain Jack's Pirate Hats. Also, you can varnish or clear coat your straw hat, with multiple coats you can seal all the holes ( providing it's not an open weave straw) To make it shed the water and keep you dry in those Caribbean squalls. -Jeff

The Honorable Order Of The Leviathan On Facebook

The Honorable Order Of The Leviathan On Facebook
Jeff MacKay replied to Jeff MacKay's topic in Order of Leviathan
Stynky sorry to put words in your mouth. I just don't see how does adding "Honorable" feel like a wimpy add on? I could not rename the page. I had already picked the username. From Facebook: "Facebook usernames will be available in basic text forms, and you can only choose a single username for each of the Pages that you administer." "The selected username should clearly identify the artist or business represented by your Page. Create a username that is as close as possible to your public figure or business name (e.g. AshtonKutcher, PizzaHut) to avoid any confusion or misrepresentation. In addition, generic words (e.g. restaurant) are not available as options for Facebook usernames. Think carefully about the username you choose for your Page as once it has been selected, you will not be able to change or transfer it. " thus I could not change it. I was left with the options of not pleasing you guys and leaving it up, or... the option of taking it down. IF we want a "Order of Leviathan" fan page it is available last time I checked. -
The Honorable Order Of The Leviathan On Facebook
Jeff MacKay replied to Jeff MacKay's topic in Order of Leviathan
Ok, First, Thank you all for respecting me. Secondly I am not afraid of our Name. I like the name, as I have said repeatedly, and again I am not suggesting to change it as an organization. Thirdly Stynky, When has it ever been wimpy to be "Honorable". There is even Honor among thieves. Lastly, the page has been removed. -MacKay -
The Honorable Order Of The Leviathan On Facebook
Jeff MacKay replied to Jeff MacKay's topic in Order of Leviathan
I think, Captain Sterling has the right of it. And understands my intent quite clearly. I say, we DON"T officially change our name. I like the original name. Adding those few words in cyber space though, allows us to gain a large following, on line. While creating a distance from that other group. At a certain point, because of the repetition of key words being used in our facebook activity( eg. order, leviathan, order of leviathan) and in any other social media, the search engines will find us by "Order of Leviathan" and we WILL be the group found when google searching "Order of Leviathan". Replacing those damned other guys. It is a clever Cyber Pirate trick, that appeals to my nature. In addition, it is not out of the realm of possibility that these first 16-17 (whatever the actual number is) people ARE Honorable. I say they all are, and I am proud to say that about everyone of them! And as they make up the body of the Order at this time, the order is Honorable. We all conducted our selves in the running of The Devil's Dozen competition honorably, and we all view being in the Order of Leviathan as an HONOR. I say that each one of us sees this order as Honorable. Isn't that what we just were saying back and forth to each other when deciding to keep the name... We can call ourselves (on facebook) whatever we will, and yes, set our own benchmark, bar or standard to live up to. We will still be the Order of Leviathan. As a good mate of mine said..."It's what we do that defines us, lets make a good example of ourselves". All I am suggesting is the clever use of a few words, on facebook, for now. I am not suggesting we actually change the title of the order. I hope this has explained my tactic. If you still think we need to vote on this, it can be our second order of business. PS. I'm lighting fires to keep it warm in here for you mate. -
Ahoy Brethren (and Ladies), In an effort to be proactive, following Our decision to Keep our Orders name and make it our own, and to blow the other guys out of the cyber waters, replacing them in the search engine rankings, I have started a facebook page. It is a slight variation to the name, which i think will allow a transition (on google) to occur more smoothly. I am not suggesting that we change our name. If adding "The Honorable" Order of "The" Leviathan is an issue, let me know and I can take the fan page down. I know that some of you will ask, "If we already are on Pyracy.com in the common forum area as well as having our own members' forum, whay do we need to be on facebook?" The answer is simple, facebook is the largest social media platform on the web. It is the quickest way to gain a huge following, Google and the other search engines now follow discussions and activity on facebook, which contributes to rankings in the search engines, this is an extremely new practice for google, and is estimated to be one of the fastest ways to change your google ranking. Also today, facebook has added the "LIKE" button to fan pages. So now rather than feeling like you are making a major commitment by "becoming a fan" people can simply click "like". This change has been made to boost a fan pages supporters. Combined, these things is HUGE. Facebook is the largest Social Media Platform, Google now follows the activity on Facebook Fan Pages, and it is now easier for facebookers to become a supporter (fan). I lnvite you all to become fans, post comments, pictures, and dialog there as well as on Pyracy.com Simply remember though, this is an OPEN, PUBLIC platform. Do not discuss our Private Business on this fan Page. If someone becomes a fan, they can post and interact (much like on Pyracy.com open forum). This IS TOTALLY a move to be PROACTIVE and gain a huge group of supporters. -MacKay
