Thanks! As I rather suspected contrary to the popular character, the seaman, unless in dire straits, prided himself on the maintenance, patching, repairing or fabrication of their kit. That the ragged look is more theatrical or Hollywood except if a person was to assume a particular persona or role.
The cloth stocking cap could be a style of workman's cap, not too exaggerated in length rather like a nightcap. The longish knit cap of the French Coureurs de bois style perhaps regionally made it aboard ship as a substitute for the Marmouth cap.
