i have a good amount of white linen and thinking about dyeing some of it. Have you run across a formula for blue and white checks? LOL At the current time I'm undecided what color to dye it. My last shirt batch was just before Ft Gaines and I'm pretty set for shirts now. Maybe I should just make white rev war waistcoats... If it was another color I would make waistcoats, but white doesnt lend itself to much else unless you dye it.

PS... DID you maked baked beans also? LOL

I remember my mom using alum when pickling cucumbers. It supposedly keeps the pickle firm. But I also read something about alum being toxic in large amounts. Since those were black beans, I assume the dye is black or brown, or a dark gray? The color on my monitor looks like gray. Congrats on the efforts to make dye from a natural source! That is something I was researching because somewhere I read that there were no bright green natural dyes. There were natural green dyes, but not like we see today. They used the dyes for yellow and blue to get green. whether mixed dyes or separate dye steps, is unclear to me so far.

This topic reminds me of an old Brady Bunch episode. I think it was Peter that answered "What's for dinner?" with "Pork Chops and Appleshhhhauce" Anyways, I was looking for sausage recipes and happened across a couple sausage/pork and apple dishes. Seems like an odd combination, but maybe cause I didnt grow up around it. So I may have to experiment. https://lidiasitaly.com/recipes/sausages-and-apples/ and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcBuj8WvyK8

Decided I wanted a new color waistcoat. A little longer than the old one. Made this from some linen curtains found at Goodwill. Haven't decided on buttons yet...

Tall ship tours Tall ship sails w/cannon battles activities for the kiddos Beer garden Vendors (including food) I'm told the pirate camp will be reversed this year. They are moving the bandstand to the west end of the grass closer to the other vendors. NHEF and Alliance camps will be moved towards the east end of the grass. This is actually a good thing. Keeps the modern stuff together and doesnt drop us right in the middle of it. The first thing people will see when they enter is pirates! https://maritime-fest.org/ I was looking at the Pirate and Mermaids Ball on Saturday until I saw the price per ticket. Obviously a fund raiser for the Institute!

Excellent! I found a similar 2 gallon wine keg at Goodwill. I'll be aging it slightly and adding a period bung and spigot to it for Williams Tavern at Tooele.

Ye never know when ye might get a potential crewmate knocking on the door. So in between SlopsbyChaaps orders I've been working on some additional loaner gear. Most of this is made with recycled material, washed and stitched up just like new items. There is an assortment of sizes and most of the waistcoats will have a drawstring back to accomodate different builds. Trying to make these adjustable. When combined with Paul's and WIlliam's loaners we should have a pretty good loaner slops chest! There's also a couple of modern checked shirts with the collar cutdown to a band collar and covered with a waistcoat will be passable for newcomers.

Enjoy a day at the Manteo waterfront and see wooden boats displayed in the water and on the grounds of the Roanoke Island Maritime Museum at this special event that pays homage to the region’s deep ties to maritime history and culture. Now celebrating its 10th year, the public is welcome to head to the scenic docks of the downtown waterfront to enjoy the fine craftsmanship of both newly created vessels, as well as restored and historic wooden boats from generations past. Registration is open for craftsmen to show off their professionally built or restored wooden boats, including power, sail, and row or paddle, and all proceeds help with the local youth sailing program. Awards will be granted to favorite entries, which includes the “People’s Choice Award” as well as the coveted “H.A. Creef Award,” which is a perpetual award that is presented to the best overall boat. For spectators, the sheer array of wooden boats displayed throughout the area will be a treat that only adds to the overall charm and uniqueness of a downtown Manteo exploration. With lots of reasons to participate - or just to take a stroll and enjoy the show - it’s no wonder that the Wooden Boat Show has become a favorite event for residents and fall visitors alike. https://www.outerbanks.com/wooden-boat-show.html

Wooden boats and Southport…it’s like the Cape Fear River Pilots guiding a freighter up river, commercial fisherman returning to the Old Yacht Basin with their Brunswick Catch, the Old Smithfield Burying Grounds, hosting NC State’s official 4th of July celebration, the Gentleman Pirate Stede Bonnet careening the Revenge through the Cape Fear inlet, or all the local history on display in Southport’s NC Maritime Museum and Visitor’s Center. All are an integral part of Southport’s heritage and are celebrated each year at the Southport Wooden Boat Show. The 14th Annual Southport Wooden Boat Show was another success with great vendors, outstanding food, unbelievable weather, and a terrific turnout of wooden boats and visitors alike. Our tradition continued with boats on display both On-Land and In-Water. Visitors met and talked with wooden boat makers and owners, sampled the Taste of Cape Fear delicacies, observed Cape Fear Community College performing live steam bending of wooden boat parts and enjoyed live music. Various raffle prizes were awarded, including this year’s raffle boat. In addition, there were boat tours of the yacht basin and surrounding areas while children of all ages learned about Southport’s nautical history from the NC Maritime Museum and built their own boats to test their sea-worthiness. We all enjoyed the rope making and static sailing displays while engaging in entertaining and informational discussions and exhibits presented by the North Carolina Aquarium and The Ft Fisher Underwater Archeology Branch. In 2024, we’re planning for more boats, more nautical/maritime vendors and more people, as we have continued to grow into one of the largest Southport Festivals of the year. And, as has become our tradition, we will feature a new collectors’ quality poster to be designed by a local artist as well as our ever popular, special edition T-shirt. Both will be available at the show from the Ship’s Store tent. As in previous years, we will have live music, many exciting items to be raffled, as well as excellent food provided by award winning Frying Pan Restaurant Chef Craig Blanks. Mission Statement The Southport Wooden Boat Show’s purpose is to promote interest in and disseminate knowledge of the craft and art of wooden boat construction, to support efforts to preserve wooden boat construction and skills and to celebrate the region’s maritime and boatbuilding history. This is accomplished through the SWBS Committee and an exceptional volunteer workforce. The Southport Wooden Boat Show is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization. No goods or services are rendered for contributions, and they are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. https://southportwoodenboatshow.com/

Reviving this thread. Since the loss of Fort Taylor Pirate Invasion (FTPI's last year was 2014), my other favorites were a tossup between Searles and Dana Point Tallships festival. Dana Point rose to the top simply because of easy access. We used to do pirate shows on the Pilgrim for the public and camp in a historic based pirate camp. During Covid the Pilgrim sank at its mooring and was scrapped, so our shows went to the wayside. There is still the historic pirate camp on the grass near the beach. Some parts more authentic than others. Now there is a Spirit of Dana Point tallship and we are hoping to make use of that tallship for the shows. But, its at the beach, there are tall ships and pirates, and camping for the weekend with friends. I've always loved Searles, because it is based on an early historic event. But being really a one day event... Saturday, and a parade on Friday night, it was hard to justify the trip, especially when we had a local event that competed for my time. Its a very long trip from AZ for 1 day so I only make it every couple of years. But alas, I have a new favorite... 1721 at Ft King George in Darien Georgia. The first event in April 2024 was warm and insects galore, and its been moved to a new timeslot, early December like FTPI. It was a great first event and looking forward to it growing even more. Every event morphs thru the years and this one got off to a great start from a historic perspective. I am earnestly watching to see where it goes. And isnt it always the way, you either have the time or you have the money, but never both. I used to have the money for travel and limited time to do it, now I have all the time in the world and little money for travel. So I've been reaching out and trying other more local events. Pirate weekend at the AZ ren fair has its appeals. Long Beach Pirate Invasion which is not historic in the least, gives perspective to the other events we do. Now, I'm even considering Bisbee pirate weekend in AUgust. Bisbee is a quaint little town in Southern az, so we'll see what it has to offer. William is dragging me along as well (ok not dragging, maybe holding a carrot) and so I've committed to a the Tooele Ren fair in Utah, since I can drive to it. We can spin the Mercury crew at this and see where it goes. I guess the trick is to just get out and do it!
