  1. I have a little company that i maintain for fun - www.IvanHenry.com I sell India made flintlocks for folks who are skilled enough to add a flint, drill a vent hole and tinker if need be or to folks who just want a really nice authentic "paper weight" that can be made to fire at a later date. My prices are great for what i deliver. I keep a small inventory. I've sold a couple of pieces to folks on the pub already.

These can be made to fire? Just looked at the website, they look very nice.

  2. Well, I see that they make dental Vulcanizers, Topidus, dental chairs, dental wheel engins (operate drills), nothing before this. I also found similar tools for measuring for mouth/teeth impression molds. I just learned that there were a lot a scary dental tools out there in the 1800s. I sent the images and link on to a friend who might have other ideas.

  3. Due to all the nonsense with my 10 year old's schooling up here I am ba ck to school myself, getting that teaching degree I always wanted. The have put a stop to history and science here, grouping them with math and English...the schools are a joke. If it was for me my son would know nothing about history and science. What they don't teach I teach, its the only way.

Which leads me to wonder if this guy with the cannon was educated or not. You would think that someone with a bit of intelligence and education would not be shooting a cannon, live, in his back yard. I know people who have swivel guns on their decks, over the water out side Boston, who fire them all the time, but with not with shot. Again, even smart people do stupid things sometimes.

  4. The International Dental Journal 1890 lists Hood & Reynolds, the Boston Business Directory 1871 list J Hood & SH Reynolds Goldbeaters, the Boston Almanac and Business Directory 1898 has an ad for Hood & Reynolds Dental Depot manufacturers of fine gold foil and all kinds of dental instruments located at 781 Treemont Street, Room 4 the Knickerbocker building, Beecher's manual and dental directory of the United States 1884 lists them under 'tooth powders' at 74 Treemont. It also seems that Hood and Reynolds split some time around the 1900s each continuing to make dental equipment and supplies. I would venture to guess that it is some sort of Victorian dental device.

  5. Hmmm makes you wonder, if the country continues along these lines, if common sense will cease to exist...we certainly don't seem to encourage it any more...even in the schools...

Common sense only exits in 10% of the population, the fringe population of this country. When you use common sense people think something is wrong with you, so less and less people use it. They all want to be too cool for their own good, its a problem.

I wont even get on to US schools, I have been fighting with the school department for years, they are ridiculous! Didi you know that they don't even teach handwriting any more??? WTF?

The dumb shall inherit the Earth....

  6. I still say its funny. I have spent the last 20 years dealing with really educated people who do really stupid things and the I have to fix it. After a while it just makes you laugh. Yest it was stupid and dangerous, but still funny. Think about the call to the guys homer owner's insurance company " yeah, I have to make a claim. A cannonball was shot through my house,..am I covered for that?" That's funny. I don't feel that it makes me look bad as a reenactor, it just makes him look like a fool. Sometimes you just need to see the humor in other peoples stupidity.

  7. If you are looking to buy anything over 18-20 feet get ready to shell out a lot of doubloons! You cab make plywood dories for a few hundred and make them look like a planked dory. You can also make an 18 foot sailing dory for just a little more. There are books at the Barns and Noble and Borders, and onthe web that tell you how. You do need a little knowledge of bout building and alot of carpentry skills. As soon as I am done with the house, looks like next summer, I am going to start on my sailing dory, square rigged.

  8. Don't forget their accessories, pick & whisk etc, make your own sling though

I have all that, I'm just trying to find musket balls for a .75 cal. musket! That seems to be the trick at the moment. Any ideas? We're going to the gun club on the 12th and I need to be able to shoot.

  9. I have been noticing in the many pictures of people in their garb that so often it looks too new.

(nothing against those who are out there putting stuff together, you all seem to be doing a great job)

I am just wondering how many pirates would have slops that were still white, or not stained with at least 'tar' somewhere? or patched?

Are there any of you out there who have found good ways of distressing your garb?

Anyone ever try to simulate or actually give the kit some powder burns to simulate close combat?

I would guess that a pirate would want his stuff in good repair, not run around in rags if he could help it, but unlike today where a stain will get an item discarded, I would expect, an evident repair or a stain that just won't come out, would be the norm for the time period.

So, 'how about getting dirty? ' :D

I used "Quick Filler" asphalt tar filler in small amounts on my slop trousers for that i've been working in the riggn' look. I know a guy wh actually shot a live round blunderbuss at his jacket. Or the other option is just wear your gear all the time like I do, that is if you don't mid the smell after working in the garden or doing some manual labour!

  10. Just a comment on my Spelling, or better, typing skills, I think I need a typing class. Remember always proof read your work....You see ever since I cut open my finger I know have limited feeling in it and it makes it hard to type. I am working on editing the topic now.

  12. When I was six we moved from the city to a small town where everyone was related or had know each other for generations. I never had a friend in school until about 4th grade. I was constantly picked on by students and teachers alike, not to mention the cops. I soon learned t ignore it all. By high school it was getting attacked by five, six, ten or even more guys at a time. By this time I had discovered punk rock. We had a good number of punks in the school, we all banded together, safety in numbers. It had gotten to a point that I could not walk anywhere alone, in school or out of school. To me it was all so stupid, it was high school. By the time I was leaving school I just didn't care any more. I ended up in a big fight, chairs and other objects were involved. After that I had a rep as a psycho and no one bothered me. I got into a lot of fights after that, none that I started or instigated, I started defending people more, and the psych rep grew, and its still with me.

  13. I have been researching traditional cat-o'-nine-tails. I know what the look like and I know where to get a modern version, but I would like to make something a bit more period. I nave this information "...weighed about 13 ounces (370 gram) and was composed of a baton (handle) and nine cords.". These cords are up for dispute. I have heard rope, leather, metal chain, and few other materials. My thought are rope. Does anyone know the truth of the matter? What were these cords made of?

  14. I make authentic colonial benches and tables. Right now we have a 6 foot table with removable legs, it looks like something you might see in a dining room. I made 4 one person benches, and a basic chair. I'll post a picture later today. the benches can be shipped without issue, if you are interested, but the table is another story...
