  6. People today don't think like someone living in the time, society, conditions and politics of 300 years ago so I doubt we can get close to the language, postures and attitudes that affect the way we present ourselves, even as (re-en)actors. Sure, we can put some of this stuff on, but it's like putting on a coat. Beneath the layer of cloth, you're still the same person. There is the rub! Trying to forget all you know about the modern world and think like it is the 18th century is extremely difficult. It takes years of practice just to get it somewhat right.
  7. This is an old argument. I am on a lot of on-line message boards, etc., and this argument always goes on ,and on and on. No on can be 100% accurate. First it is impossible because we do not have all the answers. I am currently getting my teaching degree so I can put my history to work as a history teacher instead of working my crappy job and trying write books in my sparetime. From everything I have learned and studied over the bast twenty some on years I know there are still unanswered questions. I go by the rule of 90% - knowledge, look, speak, etc. if you have that you more or less an expert. Most people only have about 50%. They look good, some of there gear is questionable, they have basic knowledge )enough to give a good presentation), and they can speak relatively in time period. Over time these 50%ers will gain more experience and get better, its a natural progression. I have been involved in reenactment and living history for 20 years or so. When I started out I was all wrong, not even 50%. BUT I got help from other reenactors and got much better. Today I still have a problem with the language of the 18th century. Speaking correctly in the correct time period is the hardest thing for me, but I get better year after year. We need to allow newbies to make mistakes and help them out, and not just newbies. I have seen guys out on the field who have been doing this for 30 years or longer and they still have inaccuracies in their kits. I just don't think it can be avoided. Just give people a chance an help them correct their mistakes, it is the only way to get young blood into this. I'm pushing 40 and at some events I am the youngest person there! Now I did not have time to read allof the responces out there, so if someone already said all this...thank you.
  8. That is an old blacksmith tradition that has been going on for centuries.

  13. I would find out if it fires. Looks like it could but I can't tell from the images. It almost looks like a non-firing replica, but the barrel looks to be steel and the lock doesn't. Get more information from the seller.

  16. UPDATE - The oilskin is coming out quite nicely. I am shocked. It is drying well in the 60 degree dry weather we are having and where it has dried it feels a bit waxy but not oily. A few more days should dry it out completely, I hope. Oh, yes, I don't want to bring it in until it is totally dry, I don't want a house fire either.
  17. Just unbelievable. Every time I leave Rhode Island to go to anther state with my flintlocks I call the State police in that state. I find that if you acall the same department over three you get three different answers on the law. I have even called the Attorney General in Massachusetts to find out, left messages and never received a call back. I think the problem is that know one really knows what the law says exactly and they all have a different interpritation on it if they do. Ifind that here in Rhode Island the police have better things to do than harass re-enactors with flintlocks.
  18. I'm starting to think you are right. The cloth is no longer wet, a bit damp in spots. It is very waxy. I am thinking that it might need to have the excess wax shaved off. The smell isn't so bad, more live beeswax than linseed oil. I'm still not convinced that this was a totally bad idea, but I have a backup plan.
  19. You know i read about doing that, haven't tried yet, but it looks great. Good show!
  20. Well, It was just for educational purposes. If nothing else I leaned never to try this again. It is still tacky and dripping somewhat, but it might work out.
  21. Currently the fabric is soaked. Tonight when I get home I'll check it again and see how dry it got hanging in the sun all day. If it doesn't work I'll be using commercial waterproofing spray!
  22. I rolled it on with a paint roller and it drenched the thing. Its was dripping today when I put it out on the line. I am hopping it gets a lot of sun today. It was so bad but it does smell bad. I don't know that I'll do it again, just going to wait and see how it turns out.
  23. OK so I found a traditional recipe on the interweb for making oilskin canvas. Two parts linseed oil, one part beeswax, one part burnt umber oil paint, boiled. So I made it, rolled it on the canvas and hung it up to cure. I am hoping this works. Anyone ever try this? The claim is it will be waterproof, just don't sleep too close to the fire...
  24. That's really cool. I just don't have the money for it or it would be mine. however i think I can make that. Thanks!
