  1. [quote Wow Silas, that cement plant is BIG! okay-- note the slight exageration :) IIRC, 9000 acres is what they bought... but i heard it second hand, and you know what they say about the validity of hear-say !! but from what i've seen of the place, 9000 acres may not be too far off...
  2. this is the holcim cement plant very close to st. genevive, mo. ... it is a brand new plant... river city cement, just up the river, is a current plant, but doing some major expansion... from what i saw on the news a while ago, conrete was a cheaper alternative to asphalt when gas prices were sky high... hence, the investment in a new plant, and expansion on another... the plant is freaking huge !!! 50 billion acres or something like that :)
  3. on sunday, we had some extremely high winds in the st. louis area... monday, when i went into work, this is what was waiting for us.... this used to be a crane.... notice the cab leaning over backwards... what's left of the boom... one of the conveyors the boom hit notice that the boom was blown over BACKWARDS !! luckily, very few were working that day and nobody got hurt...
  4. just showed grace the page... she thought it was fun to see all of this... thanks mission :)
  5. aw heck, michael... she's just voiceing some frustration !! the pattern will work out... i am committed to seeing to that... it's just another learning curve for us..
  6. AWWW !! keep er clean !! besides, i have to practice a little more
  7. just need to play with the pattern a bit more and figure out what we are missing, or how to make the pattern work... others have done it, so can we !!
  8. hey rumba... it's good to see that you are recovering well.... never had back surgery and hope i never do !!
  9. INSPIRATION !! finally finished a bottle of me own !! used some "el cheapo" jute, a regular bottle ( but it is rum ) ... need to do a little something at the top, though.. then, using some hemp string and a smaller "weave", started on another.... the first one turned out fairly decent... finished the bottom merely "ok", but overall i am pleased :)
  10. wow !! long intro :) where's the rum ?? welcome, have fun, and buy us all a round
  11. more class 'A' work from pappa !! now i'm startin' ta get jealous :)
  12. i was in the same boat as you... attended a pirate fest, got hooked...wanted to be more active in the whole scene, found my way here, started learning ( i got lots more to go ! ), made some garb, met alot of great people, improving our garb-- thanks to the same great people, becoming more active in the reenacting events ( even if i am just an extra :) ) and having fun.. it is a fun hobby, and even satisfying when you do things like finally getting the shirts sewn up "just right"... we are going to make a few sailors jackets, try a different pattern for breeches-- the last ones were okay, hey we are still learning :), and then on to a justacorps... all of these are from period correct patterns... if i can learn to make a few things, then you can, too... give it a try, expand your "obsession", and have fun doing so :)
  13. CONGRATS !! hope everyone is doing well.... uh.... you buyin' rum ??
  14. Ah I think I got you now.... in many cases the buttonhole extends well past the area that is actually cut open for the button itself... many buttonholes seemed to be worked any where from 1" to 2" long... purely for style... dang, I'd post ye a picture but I just realized my coats are still in the car since RF5... boy I was sicker than I thought... that's what i thought.... does make it look neater ... i'll take a peek at your coat in columbus...
  15. does this mean that some in the mercury crew are to be branded as well ?? what are the little "alien" looking guys ?? do they signify anything ?? going by the "coolness" factor, i'd agree with md and say #3... other than that, i have not the knowledge to make an intelligent suggestion
  16. I'm not quite sure what you mean by elongated? Wide stitches? From what I have seen of originals my stitches are way too wide...now a lot of buttonholes were done on the fabric prior to cutting out the garment... I make my buttonholes after the garment is finished... and basically I'm too lazy to break up the stitch by going up and down... instead of just catching a bit of the fabric... am I making sense? when going through one layer as opposed to several the width can be much smaller and tighter... also with one layer, you can keep it taunt like a piece of embroidery.... which isn't going to happen on a finished coat to the same degree when the stitching extends about two inches or so past the actual button hole.... like the pics show with the darker coat...
  17. put me down for one when they are done... the kids is botherin' me agin not a bad price at all !!
  18. forgot a question... is the button hole stitch usually elongated like your pics ??? i imagine that it is for extra decor for a fancier look ???
  19. things in st. louis are bad also.... construction wise, i think i'm on the only job going... a cement plant 1 1/2 hours away from home beats sitting at the hall getting unemployment, though.. the company i work for just laid off 100 electricians from this job alone...i've made it through alot of layoffs before, but when this job is done, i don't know if there will be anything else... might be joining the ever growing list...
  20. hey bo, what would a pike cost us when you are done with them ??
  21. crap !! been doing it wrong... didn't notice the knot thing... oh well, will print the pic and try on my next holes... thanks sterling :)
  22. not having seen a topic on this.... what weights do you recommend for what garment ??? for a somewhat educated estimate, i figure light weight for shirts, medium for breeches, maybe heavy for a short jacket or justacorps... what are peoples' recommendations ??? ( for ladies garments, also )
