Well, I recieved my pattern from Kass the other day and I thought I'd start a thread to track my progress. Step, the first: I have to say, as a whole dealing with Reconstructing History has been a pleasure. We experienced a small technical hiccup - the sort of which I've experienced before (I also work in a company with an internet presence) but was a first for Kass - she handled it perfectly, communication was clear between us via e-mail, and I got my pattern in very short order. The pattern itself appears well laid out and I see no obvious problems but of course I wont know for sure until I start putting things together. In addition to the pattern there was a well …

This is a rather unusual topic for me, but if you like the game Metroid, the new one for the Wii has some pretty cool pirate ship boardings. I don't play, but my son does, and I'm a kibitzer (I like to watch). Anyway, last night I dreamt of Metroid, but the pirates were of our ilk. No space aliens, just Blackbeard. Was this worthy of a topic? It is plunder, I suppose, since someone might actually want the game now.

Okay, Iron Bess isn't the only one who gets to show off her new plunder. Here is the Windlass cutlass that Chain Shot surprized me with at the end of Ojai. I may have to keep that man! It needs a bit of polish (any recomendations on how best to do that?), but the vendor cut $50 bucks off the price, threw in the scabbard, and didn't charge to ship it to Oregon. Sweet. I like to think that the R stands for Ransom.

Ok, so I ordered these planes from bateau.com about two years ago and just kinda sat on um. I tried to find a nice little wooden row boat, but out here on the left coast, they are rare and or expensive. So I figured I would start this post to document its progress. Or any one else how has started building a boat. All I have left to do is; sand the whole bloody thing, rub rail, seat tops, mast, coat the damn thing in epoxy and then paint. All fear the good ship MAKO! \

Ok... this is going to be kinda long, and convuluted...... I started making a Ditty bag for a late-Birthday gift.... (The one on the left)... I still have to make the lanyard....... But then I got thinking...... Hey... Other than the one that I painted (so I now use it as a tent steak and rope bag)..... I don't have a dity bag.... So I got kinda carried away, and made it with a leather bottom, and some fancy work.... I still have to permately seize all of the netting.... right now, it's just temperoraly siezed so I can see how it looks..... I didn't want to have everything inside just jumbled up, so I made a ring of canvas on the inside that acts as pockets, so eve…

Revisited because I know that this has been a topic of discussion before. However, has anyone tried (or dealt with as a supplier) the products from - http://www.ushist.com/props/personal_items_2.htm#item5 They are certainly priced right. I happen to be a fan of smoking clays but am always cautious of online dealers. The date listed on the site is mid-eighteenth century but the shape of the bowl on the churchwarden is a dead-ringer for a pipe listed in Dunhill's pipe book as being dated 1700. This was when the transition from the flat heel to a spur began. Any thoughts? As I said, the price is certainly right.

I was at Big Island Rendezvous in Albert Lea, MN last weekend, and saw this amazing original firearm: It's hard to get an idea of scale in this photo. It is roughly 150% the size of a brown bess, and close to 5 feet long. There was usually a large crowd around it, so I was only able to eavesdrop on the owner's description. He said it was a sniper's musket, circa 1820, of the type used by both American & British forces on land and at sea. It requires one man to load the charge and another to aim and fire. They fired three small - (for this gun, 95 grains is small) - rounds, missing their target at 200 yards all three times. Quite an impressive firearm!

Well okay... so at first I thought this was really stupid. But (shrug) what can I do? I had to have it. Davy Jones Chest as a CD player and guess what? It's not bad! Really too funny. The Crab motif in front is all of the controls with the center of the thing the digital read out! Good sound (Perfect for an office) And the heart.... lights up and beats a glowing red while the CD's play. Yeah, yeah I know..... little storage areas on the sides (where the chain links are) Oh dear.....what can I say....

I worked this hat together a month or so ago, and since we're sharing... It's not really period correct, the crown is fitted oblong rather than round, but it's what I had to work with at the time. I followed these directions, with some variations as I got to 'em. My biggest problem was the felt that is available for sale in most places is too light for a hat. I doubled it, and thought that some ironed-in interfacing would make up for a lot of the floppiness. No luck, the felt didn't stick well to the interfacing, so the hat is somewhat... poofy-looking, up close. Once it was cocked, though, I think it would pass at reasonable distance -- if not, I'm sure someone her…

Here are a couple of pieces I just finished up. The one on the left is a needlecase for myself. The one on the right was a commissioned bellrope for an 8-inch bell. Both were tied with the same type of line, just #24 cotton mason line. The needlecase has been varnished, the bellrope is awaiting a finish - probably white paint. Here's the details: Needlecase - Case is a segment of bamboo. Cork is a shaved wine cork. Knots from top to bottom are: 3 strand flat braid (plat) for cork lanyard secured to cork with a matthew walker knot on the inside. 3x5 Turkshead on cork, tripled 6x5 Turkshead, doubled Grafting 3x8 Turkshead, tripled Bellrope - Ringbolt h…

Does anyone know where I can get some more of this fabric? I bought some of it from a vendor at Gulf Wars earlier this year, and I would love to get some more, but I don't know the name of the vendor! All I have left is this one scrap! It's a satiny material, and it's reversible!
