I have a large original lock that I believe to be Spanish from roughly the 1720's. It is a french style lock however has the large round ring (like a spanishmiquelet) on top of the cock with no provision for a screw driver. The frizzen is nearly verticle when closed and the frizzen is bridled (which is why I figure more late 1720's). The frizzen also has verticle groves cut in it that are mostly worn off. On the outside is a makers mark consisting of a crowned R, the crown having 5 points. On the inside is a sideways V inside a box next to a "P". Overall shape of the lock is quite curved instead of flat. I will try to get some pictures up asap. Is there anybody wh…

I wanted to let everyone know of a great source for gun flints. I heard about these flints from a black powder forum I belong to, the topic was gun flints and posts were about Rich Pierce a gentleman that hand knaps gun flints. The source of his flints comes from the Meramec River area in his state of Missouri. The flints are white to light grey in color and are very hard and very durable. I for one have a lock on a gun that is murder on flints and I can now say that is no longer a problem. These are as in Rich's words "rough, tough, and sparky" I got back from a day's worth of shooting and these flints stay sharp and produce showers of sparks. Rich says he can make any…

I tried the search function to look at the many images that have been posted here over the years but had no luck. It seems that there were many early guns that were put together without sideplates, using large headed screws or ferules intead. Does anyone know where or how I can find any images of GAoP firearms that have no sideplates? Thanks for any help/advice Bo

Just got in a bunch of parts and I am looking for a few ideas for pistols: Just had this bored out, still have to ream it and get a breech plug: Some of the parts, most are basic, some are for rifles I am also supposed to have a lock coming, its either a bess lock, or a doglock, I cant remember what he said I was getting. It was from a trade... Any ideas would be helpful, I have only built rifles in the past...I'll post pics later of those....looking forward to playing with pistols and maybe a blunderbuss or two!

I have a question about rust, how to prevent it, and how to deal with it. I own a sea service pistol (steel) and a blunderbuss (brass) as well as a cutlass and boarding axe. I live and work on boats as a Captain. This winter I was the Captain of a SCUBA diving boat in Pompano Beach, FL and had my weapons with me as I intended to go to the Florida Renaissance festival and other festivals in the area. I ended up only taking my weapons out of the gun case (that I had purchased for flying with them and keep them stored in it for ease) once all winter while on the boat. Months latter when I opened the case again in Baltimore the locks of both guns were completely covered i…

Some of you know that POD does most of my leatherwork that I sport at festivals and events. This is a trade item that I traded him for a hot sword/pistola belt for miss Applebooteh. Anyway, this is quite a bit upgraded then what he picked out for her but I wanted to make it something special for him since he did the same for me. This is based off of our production 28" cutlass blade. I hand ground a fuller in it and gave it a false edge and pulled the standard edge back a bit then gave the spine a bit of filework. The hilt is based off of our standard Bootstrap. I upgraded that a bit aswell. Added some file work and some hammer finishing. The handle is upgraded to a hic…

Has anyone watched this show yet? I keep it on whenever I see it just to catch what awesome firearm will come in next. Last episode they had a double barrel French carriage gun with a spring loaded bayonet. I am inspired to make one of these. The coach guns and other flintlocks that they get on that show are some of the best examples I have ever seen. The muskatoon that they had was also out of this world and they shot it. Infact they shoot almost all of the antique guns that they buy. Anyone else catch this at all?

Ahoy Maties! For this years Rock Hall Pirate weekend another crew member and I built a CO2 powered cannon. This thing will fire any type of ammunition that'll fit in a 3" tube and is under a certain weight but for this weekend we stuck to water balloons Here be a few photos of the finished product: The Cannon itself measures 54" Long and the carriage is 36" long and about 21 inches high. We were running off of a 20lb CO2 tank that is tucked away in the carriage. We fired over 50 balloons and BARELY put a dent in the CO2. Firing at around 60 psi we were averaging a range between 40 and 50 yards. Since we were constantly moving on the water it was touch to g…

I made this upgraded basket this weel. It is based off of our standard basket #1 pattern. The blade is similar to most of our backsword blades but with a slightly curved 33.5" blade. Blade length : 33.5" Blade type: double fullered backsword with false edge POB: 3.5" from hilt Blade width at shoudlers: 1.5" Blade width just before point: .75" Tang width: 1" at shoulder Edge: Blunt for stage combat or sparring use This sword is currently for sale at Legacy Forge. Ahoy I thought I would pos some pictures of my new black powder additions. The guns are made by Leonard Day a master gunmaker and true gentleman. The matchlock is a .62 caliber 17th century matchlock, it is smaller in size when compard to English Civil War muskets I know of several people that hunt with matchlocks like this The original was found in Salem Ma. The pistols are 1660 French in design and come in .50 caliber, these are the first two he has made like these and they too were copied directly from original guns from a private collection. I cant wait to shoot them! I have more pictures posted in my album New blackpowder weapons. Voodoo Jack

This is a hunting falchion that I recently made. I was inspired by a few different historical hunt swords and falchions and this is my interpretation of a logical merge. Purpleheart handle, steel hilt and double false edged blade with fileworked spine. Blade is based off a 3/16" blank and is quite rigid. More pictures and details here: http://baltimoreknife.com/huntingfalchion.htm Your comments and feedback is always welcome and needed!

This is an early American saber made by Nathan Starr of Connecticut. He and his son Nathan Jr were the leading sword makers in America until 1830 when they stopped making swords and gave up the US military contract to Ames. They made roughly 2000 swords of this and later styles. This is one of the more early swords by them. They started making swords in 1798. The later swords have more pronounced curves in the blades. One reference says that they were the first production sword company in America. Making this and other swords by them a true part of US history and well worth sharing with you all. The sword has seen some improper 'cleaning' but is still quite sturdy. …
