A pirate captain was on the look out for buried treasure. After months of hard sailing, his ship caught site of land, the land to which his treasure map had been leading. He and his first mate disembarked on the island to search out the buried treasure, which was supposed to lie hidden deep within a swamp at the center of the island. Sure enough, at the center of the island was a swamp, and the Captain and his first mate bravely entered the swamp. Soon the swamp began to get deeper, and the pirate's feet, then ankles, and finally entire leg below the knees was covered in swamp. It was at that time that the Captain banged his shin against something hard. He r…

Parrot's oratory stuns scientists By Alex Kirby BBC News Online environment correspondent Feathered prodigy: N'kisi leads the field The finding of a parrot with an almost unparalleled power to communicate with people has brought scientists up short. The bird, a captive African grey called N'kisi, has a vocabulary of 950 words, and shows signs of a sense of humour. He invents his own words and phrases if he is confronted with novel ideas with which his existing repertoire cannot cope - just as a human child would do. N'kisi's remarkable abilities, which are said to include telepathy, feature in the latest BBC Wildlife Magazine. N'kisi is believed to be one o…

with school closed, and more snow and ice coming for the next 2 days I've got some time on my hands. So in between painting the family room I'll be here. Post a pirate question, any kind, factual, pop, fiction, etc. The next person answers and posts a new question. Here goes Where was Blackbeard the pirate born?

It be Friday night, an there be nothin' I like better on a Friday night than bloodyin me mates noses and havin me teeth kicked in by me mates! No malice or harsh words. Just fists and feet flyin free! Afterwards we'll all gather round and sing mournful songs to absent friends, propose marriage to each other, and gush praises bout what great scrappers we be. I'll tap the first keg and throw the first punch. Take that, who e'er ye be!

Maybe this should be on Pirate Pop, but what little I know about this crew seems to point to the conclusion that pyracy begets art, or vica-versa. So far, I've heard of several fine artists, cartoonists, actors, dancers, singers, punsters, writers, musicians, film industry types, arts & craft folks, etc. bein' on this site. And what I know of the original pyrates, seems to me there was alot of creativity there, and at least above average intelligence as well. Do you think there's a corellation? Are artsy types drawn to Piracy for it's freedom of will, the need to be alittle bad, or what? Just wonderin'. Also, if yer artistically inclined, what do you do? I make period…

Well Blow Me Down! Popeye Turns 75 LOS ANGELES (AP) - Maybe Popeye owes his longevity to all that vitamin-rich spinach. The ``Ugg, ugg, ugg''-ing cartoon sailorman who gets his superior punching power by guzzling greens from a tin can is celebrating his 75th anniversary Saturday. King Features Syndicate, which owns the rights to Popeye, is planning a yearlong series of events to relaunch interest in the pipe-tooting mariner with the outsized forearms, including a new 3-D animated TV special written by ``Mad About You'' comedian Paul Reiser. That special is set for broadcast next holiday season. Meanwhile, this weekend in New York City, the Empire State Building p…

I've been contacted via email by a leader from a Cub Scout pack in Buffalo NY who'd like a pirate (or small group of pirates) to give a talk to the cubs and their families. I'm getting more details as to the specifics, but I'd expect anyone with a decent costume and the ability to share a little pirate lore would be most welcome. Any of you from that area? Or do any of you know any pirates who are? Please let me know - we don't want to leave a bunch of Cubbies pirateless, now do we?

While not strictly piratical or nautical, the British Brown Bess musket dates to the Golden Age of piracy, and they were carried and used aboard ship and by landing parties. I came across this poem by Rudyard Kipling a few days ago. Readin' the last couple of lines makes me choke; but then, I'm weird ******************** BROWN BESS: The Army Musket -- 1700 - 1815. In the days of lace-ruffles, perukes and brocade Brown Bess was a partner whom none could despise-- An out-spoken, flinty-lipped, brazen-faced jade, With a habit of looking men straight in the eyes-- At Blenheim and Ramilles fops would confess They were pierced …

Greetin's all. Let me explain myself. I work for a game developer in Northern California. We are in the earliest stages of proposing a video game for the DVD market. This would be a mixture of live action and CGI. Guess who's in charge of the first proposal? Guess what the theme of the game is? You GUESSED RIGHT! Here's me question...how many of you would be interested in appearing in a game (as actors)? How many would be willing to be costume makers or prop suppliers? Set builders (if yer a Nor Cal local)?...You get the point. I'm sorry, I can't go into too much detail right now...but I needed to see if there was an interest among my pyratical brethren. More inf…
