The thread No More History! got me to thinking. If you could write a History curriculum, how would you design it? Don't worry about state guidelines or No Child Left Behind or any of that claptrap. What would you teach? How would you teach it? You can pick a grade level if you'd like. Be as general or as specific as you want. We all know that History is one of the least liked subjects in school, most likely because of the way it has always been taught: chronological, centered around wars or economics, tending to be biased towards the dominant culture of one's nation. This results not only in bored students, but bad history, which in turn gives us an uninformed po…

Interested in knowing if anyone else has heard about this... unfortunately I only caught a small bit off the radio and had six others in the car yacking at the top of their lungs, but the gist I got was... The historic sites either in the US or perhaps just in Virginia, are fighting a new proposition/bill, that would stop the teaching of history in the schools... anyone know about this and have more details???

I would have completely missed this if it wasn't for the Journalist who contacted me about doing a response article to this. Not sure if this was posted already.. if so, I'll post it again. Generally it's about Pirate Enthusists of what they think about the recent Somali Pirate activity. **** Link removed by request**** But, um... it's one of those that not only slaps you upside the head, but knocks on yo'r skull to get ye wonderin' and thinking... plus stirs yo'r blood either in a good way or a bad way. ~Lady B

OK, this is kicking around in Twill, and now in the Market, but the question doesn't really belong in either. Why take all the time to artificially age clothing, when just wearing it properly will do the same job? Is it your clothing, or just a costume you put on occasionally? From reading some of this, it seems that people want to look like a pirate, but wouldn't really go to the length of actually getting dirty and smelly. No matter how you do it, fake looks fake at anything less than ten feet. Even the pro costume wonks do this to be seen at a distance or on film, not in one to one contact. The only way to age clothing naturally and have it look right is to wear i…

Ahoy to all ye wenches scallywags, and nare-do-wells. I be Captain Justin Kase of the Dread Pyrate Ship SeaMonkey at your service. I have sailed the desert sands for many years, as my ship was deposited in a desert valley. Do not ever end up on the wrong side of a cat-clawed Sea Goddess. They be a fickle and spiteful bunch. She was nice enough however to deposit me and my ship in the City of Sin, Nv. Here in this desert kingdom I have gained a new crew, my wife Anya Kase, and my two devious children Aud Kase and Damm Hansom (he used to be called Brief). I attend festivals in SoCal, Arizona, and participate in the meek faire offering of my city in Oct. Most of my …

Just found this forum a few days ago and am very glad I did! Seems like an extremely friendly place with an open and welcoming atmosphere and I look forward to being a member. I'm a historian by training and my main interest is the age of sail from the 16th century to the end of the Napoleonic Wars. In my free-time I love to draw and paint (digitally) and will be posting some of my work in the art forum. Again, glad to be here, and look forward to getting to know everyone!

Greetings to one and all, my name is CJ In theory of few of you know who I am, at least I've met or at least talked with a few of your number. As far as a crewe, I am not formally a member of any pirate crewes and owe my allegiance above all to the vessel I work on. She is the ADVENTURE and is a reproduction of a 1670's trading ketch in Charles Towne SC. But I am not a terribly interesting topic, good to be here finally. yr hnrs hmbl & obdnt srvnt CJ "The health of men is concerned in their clothes" -Sir William Coventry 1663

In the next 2-3 years I'm planning on buying a boat. I'm lobbying hard for a ketch but the Mrs. want a modern Sea Ray type of thing. Honestly anything that gets me out on the water will make me happy. In my retirement, I'm planning on take a voyage down the East Coast, from Virginia to Florida. I'm sure there are places along the way I can stop for a night but I have no idea where to even look. Is there a list, anywhere, of public harbors or marinas where you can just pull in and tie off for a few hours or even a night? And of course, I've heard tell of floating bars and general stores and such that you can just pull up to in your boat. How would I find out about t…
