  1. this supplier is your typical small sutler not the jas townsend size operation. i understand the amount of time in traveling from event to event and back to home to resupply for the next event, so when i order from them i figure it will take 3mo. to receive my goods. then there is the trust that you are willing to pay up front for the goods because it is to your taste and it protects the sutler from being stuck with something because you found it elsewhere or just changed your mind. i have ordered from this sutler in the past and had to make a call concering the status of my goods. i received them shortly there after and he does very good work. this time i e-mailed 2mo. ago, the reply was he was having some trouble but the order is being processed. i e-mailed last week no answer so far. now it comes to my attention that he has not honored many orders taken at that event. i placed an order at that event with another sutler there. i hadn't received it in about 3mo. so i e-mailed her she said that there was a problem with the e-mail i gave her and she had tried to contact me, she then got my order to me with-in 2wks.
  2. how long is a resonable time to wait for a vendor to sew and ship a simple item. i paid for the item when i ordered it at an event 5mo. ago? i think i have been very patient.

  7. when i was in charlestown this april dropped by a small distillery called fire fly distillery. i bought a bottle of their spiced island rum and a bottle of their java rum. the spiced island was great smooth neat or with coke. the java was something you had the work up to, very coffee like a liquor(java! go figure), after i killed the spice island, i found that the java was at it's best neat. when i visit again i'll go my limit with the spiced island. i also have just enjoyed capt. morgan's original spiced, C.M. black and private stock and the cracken. were does the rum go!
  8. being involved with the sailing crew at jamestown i had heard about the lost of the first PRIDE OF BALTIMORE which was built in 1976 and sank on it's first trans atlantic cruise on may 14, 1986 in the caribbean, so i read the book "PIDE OF THE SEA" by tom waldron, it is a sad story and an eye opener of how things can go so wrong in a hurry at sea.
  9. i visited her when she was at opsail in norfolk. the missing crew member is her captain robin, it is a sad day!
  10. a very bloody story behind that ship.
  11. just returned from the blackbeard fest in hampton. the whole area around and including the camp was hit hard. tree limbs had to be cut and removed, a home near the stage had a huge hole in the roof from were a handicap ramp had been ripped from the stage and propelled through it. items from the camp were picked up and tossed into the hampton river. all the crews pulled together and put the camp back together and visitors were premitted in by 3pm. the weather cleared it is a great day dry and cool, they had cannon firing from the point and other pirate activities. there was a lost of vender items and tents. black bear was there along with the scarlet scarab and one other, all was set up open air because their tents were torn up.
  12. just a thought that came to mind, wearing an eye patch over a blind eye would be advertising your weak side to your enemies, i knew a girl with one good eye, it would annoy her if i stood to her blind side. no she didn't wear a patch.
  13. john smith (1600's) wrote about the use of netting to repel boarders, i think that the grappeling hook was a tool to remove the netting from a vessel to be boarded.

  20. i was able to get my hands on some oak you should use a hard wood, not sure what rr-ties are made from. it's alot of work so you need to put something on paper first. there are alot of pics of reenactors on here with their guns check some of those out.
  21. just caught the show on the tv tonight. it shot a 5ft pattern on the inside range target board thats from top to bottom with most shot in the center. it looked like the target shot and the clay pigeons from the holes was bird shot or buck nothing bigger. they did shoot it at a multi rail setup of stuffed birds but it was rigged with charges like they do alot of, so it went up in a fire ball.
  22. i bought hern's english swivel gun about 3yrs ago it's a great looking gun. it's a copy of the gun you see on the quarter deck of the surprise in master and comanders. you do have to drill the vent. i didn't go with the dolphins i thought they clutterd the look of the barrel. it is a heavy gun at 90lbs. i put mine on a carriage.
  23. there is a web site called "gentleman of fortune " he has a section covering english naval dress during GAOP, also alot of other things. i think all the button jackets where for hitting the pub, you climb on a yard and furl a sail with something like that on you would be picking them up off the deck when you get down.
