Do you need a loaner tent?

I still have at least one of the loaners remaining from the years of running the camp at Put-in-Bay. (And yes poles are included, although I'd need to verify I can fit those in the car)

I just might!  I'll let you know soon.

If I brought the makings of French Canadian pea soup, would anyone be interested in it?

It looks like something scraped out of a baby's diaper, but it is really good. Also, it is most appropriate for the French context that the site has for the GAoP.

I can adjust quantities up or down prety easily, although my default batch sizes are small (enough for 4 people who have bread or other accompanyments), or large (enough to feed 12-15 hungry people who also have bread or other accompanyments)

    Yes.

  3. There have been a lot of changes to the 'list' for the event, what with health, work and financial obligations of life interfering, but we still have a good number of first time attendees for the event and we're looking forward to meeting everyone next Friday.

We're glad to report that even with the earlier arrival and departure changes, people coming in on Wednesday and Thursday have managed to find accommodations.

As a reminder to everyone, the fort has asked that we be ready to move out of the fort when it closes on Sunday night, so please be prepared to pack up non-essentials in the late afternoon.  We wish it could be a longer stay, but we're grateful for the time we're allowed.

  4. I finally found my tent in one of the outbuildings on my property only to discover that a leak in the roof formed during the winter and let water in right on top of my tent.  I was tempted to cut it up for a bag, but now I'm most tempted to fix the holes and bring it as is.  It looks like period canvas that was stored poorly aboard ship and has been mended many times.  Yes I know.  I'm crazy and a nerd, but I'm still tempted to save it.

  5. I was surprised to find my two knives in good working order, as I've not used them for some time.  I opened the box they've been stored in for the past few years expecting to find them laced with at least some rust.  I'm not complaining, since the event is close and I need all the time I can to finish other things.  There's something to be said for a knife that is well treated when made, so that it resists rust.

  6. I couldn't be happier about the variety.  Between the linstocks made by Master Chaaps and the bamboo arriving with the Fort Taylor Pirates, we'll have a great mix of careening/marketplace style improvisation.  It also mixes up the light placement to provide low and high points of lighting for more atmosphere.

Thanks to everyone helping out on this front!

  7. French continued to be taught among the gentry after English became the common language in England by act of Parliament in 1362.  A lot of legal documents and treatises were written in French (even in England) well into the 18th century. French remained a strong language in day to day diplomacy and commerce so that even final treatises of the Spanish War of Succession were written in French.

During the 18th century the middle class (in a desire to be perceived as 'refined') continued to teach French at home along with Italian due to the influences of art, music and literature in society.  However, it was common for boys to be taught 'ancient' Latin and Greek, while the 'modern' languages of French and Italian were taught to girls.

I'm not certain how this effects bilingual numbers among sailors and officers of the navy or further out to buccaneers, but if you study any etymology, you constantly see that word origins begin in French all the time.  English as a developing language owes a lot to French.

Here's another linen remnant, it's about one yard by 50 or 60 inches - I think I spent about $6 or $8 on it. It's a drab gray-green - thinking I'll make a snapsack or a larger market wallet with it.

I can't turn around without you purchasing more fabric.  You'll need to hang out a shingle for a shop soon.

Such a bad influence, William, see what you started…

    Thank you?  heh.

We're working with Rob on some custom lanterns for the Fort.  These will be modified with a fe French artistic touches and color.  Anyone wishing to donate can send $20 and receive one of the old, stock Pyracy patches in thanks.  We've had three large donations so far and we're putting in lantern orders this week.

The new lanterns will be unique to the fort, so there's no confusion about who owns what when we leave.  Coincidently, participants are highly encouraged to mark the bottom of their lanterns with personal identifiers

I will likely bring my wedge, which is 7' by 9', no guy-lines. I could go more rustic, but prefer a little privacy at events where things are a little more close.

    Thank you!

Does anyone have period squirt guns? LOL

It's like we come up for reasons to look things up.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_gun

    9x10 wedge - no guidelines

12x12 fly, with guidelines more like 15x15. I'll have to scrounge for poles at the event

    Thank you.

I mentioned in a previous conversation that my tent has a standard (?) 10x10 or 12x12 footprint - no guide lines. I'm planning to make a shade awning, maybe a 12x15 piece of canvas tethered off the side of my tent. In total, a 10x20 footprint with poles and guide lines. I'll update you once I've got it figured out.

Thank you.  I don't mind any redundancy in conversations on these details.  It helps with information assurance.

I dont know how helpful this actually is as far as getting a sense of our overall layout, but we arent setting up again until our get together in June, which will give us a better ideaa.

It's all good information.  We should have plenty of room to accommodate the 'gross' use of your camp footprint.

We will be bringing my A-frame tent, which has a 6x8 footprint, if I recall correctly. The Fleet (my fly/ordinary-ish), is 10x10, not including the wings (each about 8x10), which are extended as needed.

It's good to have lots of shade options against the expected heat.
