Capt Rusty Wild Rice
I just signed articles to join the group of Pyrates. I recently joined the group Free Men of the Sea after having several encounters with them as the first mate of the Contenental Sloop Providence (www.sloopprovidenceri.org). I will be at Pirates in Paradise in Key West since I have some training with Outward Bound immediately following that. I have been a proffessional Tall Ship Sailor since 1996. Recently I have been first mate on the Lady Washington (of Pirates of the Caribbean "Interceptor" fame) and The Sloop Providence (of Dead Man's chest fame). This winter I will be first mate on Tole Mour, which unfortunately does not engage in Pirate activities, but does work with Kids, and that is what is important. I work lots with Outward Bound as a captain, so I am very familar with Pulling boats and long boats and know most traditional rigs (sprit rig, dipping lug, standing lug, gaff...). I love to get out on the water as often as I can, even though I am out all the time anyway. I love to teach as well. That is what I do. So if you are new to a boat and need help with it, don't hessitate to look me up. If you need crew for a ship or boat, or have any questions on things nautical, be sure to use me as a resource. I am looking to meet new people and be involved in local pirate groups wherever I happen to be sailing. Next stop Long Beach, CA. Look me up. I have plenty of cloathes to be an 18th century sailor, but I am still working on things for my Pirate kit. I may be asking for advice on things like guns and swords and such. I like to be as historically acurate as my paycheck will allow. Check out my web site for pictures of my adventures. Such as a role in a recent documentary on Benidict Arnold, and work on Pirates of the Caribbean II and III. Capt. Matusalem
Welcome aboard, Capt'n Rice! I've seen Sloop Providence on many an occasion, somewhere between Bowen's Wharf and the State Pier. Fine vessel. I'm friends with the crew of the Endeavour nearby, but that's another story for another day. I will also be in Key West, in garb. I was down there last June, and amidst all the motorcruisers ( and a pudgy Merv Griffin & his pudgy dog on his megayacht) in the harbor was a small wooden square-rigger , sailed in from Germany, at the dock. Pretty young crew, guys&girls....literally looked like the cast of Survivor, with the scruffiness to boot. Varnish worn off the wood by the sea salt. No reenacting here....now, that's sailing!
