kass Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 Hey Rats! Do you think now is a bad time to tell the Captain about my neon green Foxe tail? Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!
Rats Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 Mayhaps it's only in me own mind... But two things stand out to be somewhat peculiar.... One being a fox tail yu'll be wearing (And where) , and two my dear.....I've never seen me a green one afore. Must be Irish fox!! Rats!! No rest for the wicked! Wait a minute... that's me?!
kass Posted September 22, 2006 Posted September 22, 2006 Oh Rats... Don't say that to Mr. Foxe! Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!
CrazyCholeBlack Posted September 23, 2006 Posted September 23, 2006 I'm wondering what the estame for how long it takes to put this coat together is? There are so many things on my list of "to sew" but I'd love to add this if I can find the time. I'm looking forward to seeing everyones progress. kass Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Just for you, Rats! Apprentice #1 made the mistake of making me take off my mantua because she thought I was going to rip it. She didn't realize what I'd been hiding! This shot was taken only moments before Apprentice #3 ripped the bloody thing off me. Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!
Rats Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Could it be my dear lady, you're simply being attacked by a muppet?? Afterall, it's not easy being green! God save your apprentices! Rats! No rest for the wicked! Wait a minute... that's me?!
kass Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 God save 'em indeed! Somebody's got to! I live to scandalize them... Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!

There are so many things on my list of "to sew" but I'd love to add this if I can find the time.I'm looking forward to seeing everyones progress. Well if you have the sewing experience and plan to do it all by machine... I'd say 6-7 hours tops.... now if you plan to follow the period correct construction directions... then, with hand sewing, again, depending on your experience, I'd say 12-15 hours.... CrazyCholeBlack Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 thank you for the input Captain. That seems like a very reasonable amount of time. I am considering a combination of machine & hand for anything visable. I must pay my debts to the mistress of the prickity stitch it seems. The list grows. Gentleman of Fortune Posted September 25, 2006 Author Posted September 25, 2006 Wow... I am so out of my league then, as it can take me 30 minutes to do a freakin buttonhole! My Guess for a novice, taking their time and asking advice at every turn would be... well, I won't say! But seriously, this isn't a race. There are no prizes at the end, except the oooohing and Ahhhhing that you get from the few people that you will run into that actually know what they are looking at. But to have someone that KNOWS about 17th/18th C clothing compliment your kit is a little high all to itself.... My realistic projection is to have an early Justaucorps to wear for the Spring/Summer season of 07'. That being said, we can start a "group Breeches" project after the new year... so start searching for complimentary fabric and order your patterns now! CrazyCholeBlack Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 My Guess for a novice, taking their time and asking advice at every turn would be... well, I won't say! ahh exactly why I am asking as many of my questions before starting. There is nothing worse than being in the middle of a project & finding yourself lost. Tis at that point I generally go off alone, undoubtably in the wrong direction. kass Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Well, that's what this thread is here for, Chole. If you get lost at any point, no matter how many times we've gone over it, post here and I will help you! Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!
Capt. Sterling Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Hey Kass, Anything in the Slops contracts regarding a Gunner's kit..? as to colors and such? I plan to use this project to make our Gunner's kit... he wants to look like that one picture Foxe posted.... and I was just wondering about colours... kass Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 The colour specifications in the Slop Contracts don't change for different ranks. There's just one or two colours specified and nothing to differentiate between them. The Gunner from Foxe's site does not appear to be wearing clothing made according to the Slop Contracts. So I'd go with any period appropriate colour if I were you. Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!

Gentleman of Fortune Posted September 25, 2006 Author Posted September 25, 2006 Captain Sterling... I wasn't implying that you said it was a race... I just wanted to let folks that are thinking about taking part that there is no hurry to get done... just go at your own pace. For that matter, even if you can't start on the official date, join in whenever you can. I am sure I will be tail end charlie! I am sure I will be tail end charlie! Greg Sorry Greg, didn't mean to have that post come across so "short" .. my apologies... I certainly don't want anyone to feel pressured to be in this project... I've done one quickly before by machine so I was just giving estimates for Chole... besides its not how much time it takes a body, its how it looks when its done... I could certainly do one in 4 hours, but I sure wouldn't want to wear it!!! Cpt. Alva Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 Capt. Sterling, as much as I would LOVE to get in on a Justaucorps project, priorities take precedence, and I'm in bad need of breeches or slops..... pants before coats.....I need something to keep me legs covered.....especially with scurvy setting in, I don't want people to be seein' me legs bowing..... Well then I highly recommend purchasing Kass's Reconstructing History's slops and breeches pattern... once you get the fit, the construction is a breeze! Google Reconstructing History and check out all her fantastic Golden Age of Piracy patterns... they are without a doubt the VERY best!! Cpt. Alva Posted September 28, 2006 Posted September 28, 2006 Way ahead of you Cap!, I will be buying the patterns and fabric as soon as finances allow!, I found the site when I first came here, and knew immediately that they were the patterns for me! and then, again as finances allow, I will buy a coat pattern and fabric..... Oh, also, if I join up with your crew, I know how to operate guns! Cap'n Pete Straw Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 Hmmm... I think I'm going to get that Slops pattern next... I picked up the "buried treasure" fabric today. Sadly, they had no good wool, although there was a surfeir of linen. I think tomorrow I will try a different Jo Annes Fabrics and look for wool -- the Good News is that I have a 40% off coupon that starts tomororw... "He's a Pirate dancer, He dances for money, Any old dollar will do... "He's a pirate dancer, His dances are funny... 'Cuz he's only got one shoe! Ahhrrr!"
kass Posted September 30, 2006 Posted September 30, 2006 If there's a Hancock Fabrics near you, Pete, try there. They often have terrific wools. Building an Empire... one prickety stitch at a time!
