Lewes Delaware Pirate Raid

This just in. Lewes Delaware is celebrating its 375th birthday this year. The weekend of Sept 16 and 17 there will be some reenactments taking place. On Saturday there will be a 1660s battle, and on Sunday there will be a 1697 pirate raid on the town.

Coooooool. I'll be in that area that weekend anyway for Delmarva Bike Week. Maybe if we do the bike show Saturday and get a room in Dewey that night I can talk the boyfriend into hitting the reinactment on Sunday. Is there an exact location and time for the fun and games?

Is there any other online sources for this raid? Living just 40 minutes from Lewes, I'm always looking for close Pirate events. I can't find anything on the city's calendar and I called the city office and they didn't know of anything.

Any help would be great!

Here's the latest on this event. The Pirate Brethren will be there providing the pirates. Some 17thC reenactment groups will provide opposing forces.

We met with the event coordinator today in Lewes for the anniversary event (official name: Sail Lewes 375). We're definitely booked for Sat./Sun., Sept. 16-17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cape May/Lewes Ferry Terminal Grounds. We have a large (52 ft. by 76 ft.) encampment site and a 60 ft. by 60 ft. demo site.

We plan to have one military drill, one sword demo and one battle reenactment (pirates vs. locals) each day. We'd also like to do one 17th century fashion show each day as well. A special request has been made to find some time to do some kind of program for kids - photo op with pirates, games, costume contest, pirate talk, that sort of thing. Because of the dry weather and insurance issues, no live fires will be allowed on site, so there will be no cooking. There will be plenty of food vendors at the site, or you can pack your own food. There will be port-o-lets (including a large one with sink area) nearby as well as potable water.

From the south (Balt/Wash.):

Take 50/301 East to the Chesapeake Bay/Kent Island Bridge.  Once across the

bridge, US 50/301 will split.  Stay on US 50 to Rt. 404 East.  Stay on Rt.

404 E through to Del.  Rt. 404 will link up with Del. 9 at Georgetown, which

will take to you Lewes.  Stay on Del. 9 (don't get onto Bus. 9) and look for

the signs to the Ferry Terminal.

From the north (Penn./NJ):

Take 95 S. into Del.  You can stay on 95 S. or get onto 495 S. if you'd

rather not drive into Wilmington. Once you are past town, take Exit 4 for

Del. 1 going south.  Once you are on Del. 1, you can stay on it and pay

several tolls, or get off just before the bridge over the canal and get onto

Rt. 13. Either way, continue going south.  If you are on Rt. 13, go through

Dover and hang to the left to get on Del. 113 south.  Just past Dover, Del.

1 will quit collecting tolls and link up with Del. 113.  Just before

Milford, Del. 113 and Del. 1 will split.  Stay on Del. 1 to Lewes, then get

onto Del. 9 (don't get onto Bus. 9) and look for the signs to the Ferry

Terminal.

If you are coming from NJ, you can take Rt. 295 to either the Comm. Barry

Bridge or Del. Memorial Bridge.  Once you cross over into Pa./Del., get onto

95 S and follow the above directions.  However, you can stay in NJ and take

the Garden State Parkway all the way to Cape May and take the ferry across,

which will put you right where you need to be.  You'd have to take into

consideration the cost of gas and tolls, and the cost of the ferry..

Top o' the morning to ye Black John!

Sounds like a great time indeed!

Could you give a count of the numbers ye had attend for militia and raiders?

Any cannon??

How were the militia attired? Redcoats and such??

How about sailing vessels??

Camping on-site for reenactors??

How was the support for your crew by the staff?

Anything you would have like to 'ave seen or things you think could have been done better??

I ask this information not only in hopes of planning for next year, but also for advice in planning our own events???

Take care my friend and here's to you!

Rats!

Rats my boy, I would LOVE to attend this event, the only reason I did not make this one was that I was already committed to one that I actually have a major hand in organizing up in Long Island, NY... when you have roughly a gang of 40 or more to entertain and reach 150,000 people in one weekend, I could not say no, especially since the ones we are there for are kids mainly.

Next year the event is going to be Pirates, no more Wild west, (we've been doing that for 13 years and tis getting a bit "weary")man is my arm tired for lassoing outlaws! ;) Hopefully the weekends will be different as the Lewes event sounded like a lot of fun. I am truly sorry I missed it.

We pirates were composed of two groups, the Pirate Brethren and the Sea Rats Atlantic. In the pics the Sea Rats are the young, thin guys, and the Pirate Brethren are the older... and... experienced guys!

:D

We each had about 5 guys. So about 10 pirates total.

Any cannon??

No.

How were the militia attired? Redcoats and such??

Just as you see them in the pics. The yellow coated fellows with the red facings are Art Malesteins' group reenacting the Duke of Albany and York's Maritime Regiment. The red coated chaps are... Jame's Lifeguard? I didn't quite catch the exact title.

How about sailing vessels??

Some about, but not in use during the reenactment.

Camping on-site for reenactors??

Very nearly. Just down the street is a parks run dorm, as well as camp sites.

How was the support for your crew by the staff?

Art ran the event. From my perspective, things were perfect.

Anything you would have like to 'ave seen or things you think could have been done better??

The fighting took place on a postage stamp sized plot of land. We could've used more space.

I ask this information not only in hopes of planning for next year, but also for advice in planning our own events???

If you have your kit in order and ever want to turn out with us at an event, the door is open!

Take care my friend and here's to you!

Thankee, and likewise to you sir!

Thanks. I could think of a few ways to improve on it, such as... having you and your crew join us next time!

I used to use the phrase "bang-up job" so often that this one fellow on a mail list I was once on believed I was a British bomber pilot from WWII. Language... gotta love it!

To the Duke!

And thanks Rats, if I'm ever out your way I'll look you up.
